Former NFL star Cris Carter rails against Shedeur Sanders' decision-making throughout NFL Draft process
The Cleveland Browns selected Sanders in the fifth round. Shortly after the selection, Sanders took to social media to share a short but emotional message: "Thank you GOD." In the days since, many figures in the sports world and beyond have shared thoughts about why Sanders fell down the draft boards.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter is one of the latest former NFL stars to weigh in on the Sanders situation.
In what appeared to be his unfiltered take, Carter suggested Sanders sacrificed tens of millions of dollars due to his disposition and overall handling leading up to last week's draft.
"(Sheduer and his family) thinking that he was in the same evaluation mode as Eli Manning, they didn't play that right," Carter said during a recent sitdown on the "Fully Loaded" podcast.
"Them trying to narrow the teams that he was going to go to? That didn't go right. Not working out at the Combine? That wasn't the right thing. His interview process. Obviously, he could've done a lot better than that. A lot of people left meetings feeling he was very, very entitled."
The NFL legend also pushed back on the notion that the league colluded to prevent Sanders from becoming a high draft pick. Carter asserted that the former Colorado quarterback and his family "overplayed their hand."
"A number of things happened. The No. 1 thing that didn't happen was there was not a collusion message with the NFL owners," Carter stated. "They wouldn't be able to keep a secret like that. They wouldn't be able to shut up about it. Every owner is very, very selfish. Now, why would I do something to my detriment? Like, if I need a quarterback, and I think this kid is it? What he didn't realize is, the guys that have fallen in the draft before, they all had unusual traits. They had some superstar qualities to them. Some other things happened that made them fall, but Shedeur and his family overplayed their hand."
Carter did admit Sanders had intangibles that were worthy of a first-round pick, but not before he took aim at the quarterback's physical traits.
"He doesn't have a big-time arm. He's not a big guy. He's not overly athletic. His measurables are not, say, first-round measurables. But he played football like a first-rounder. … But you don't play football all the time. You're a human-being the rest of the time," Carter said.
Sanders finished the 2024 season with 4,134 passing yards. He is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders. He will join a crowded quarterback room in Cleveland that features Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel.

Furthermore, there's the possibility that Cincinnati won't have their standout pass rusher for the 2025 season, as he stated in May that he is unhappy with how the contract extension process is going and could be on the way out. 'With the lack of communication post-draft made it imminently clear to my party — meaning my wife, my son and my agent, a small group of people — that I had (to) inform that this might not work out," Hendrickson said in May (h/t The Athletic). "I don't think it was necessary. I think we should have all hoped for the best until proven otherwise.' Advertisement If Hendrickson isn't in the Bengals' defense to start the season, it puts more pressure on Stewart to be a productive player come Week 1. All rookies go through a learning experience, but Cincinnati might be putting the young pass rusher in a difficult spot where he has to adapt quickly. That could lead to him being a bust this season. Otton was a fourth-round pick by the Bucs in 2022 out of then-Pac-12 powerhouse Washington. He had an impressive rookie campaign with 391 yards and two touchdowns, but suffered from drops. He posted just 42 catches on 65 targets with five drops, leading all tight ends. The next season wasn't much better, with three drops on 67 targets, and he got worse last season. In 2024, Otton posted 59 catches on 87 targets with 600 yards and four touchdowns but eight drops. In ProFootballFocus' rankings earlier this season, Otton was No. 20 overall, which actually sounds a little high, honestly. "Otton's Achilles' heel is drops. He has the third most (11) at the position across the past two years. His 63.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024 was a career high and also marks the first time he generated more than 1 yard per route run (1.31). If he can hang on to the ball (also three fumbles the past two years), Otton has the skills to rise on this list." CINCINNATI -- Colorado right-hander Germán Márquez struck out a season-high eight and Hunter Goodman scored on a two-out wild pitch in the eighth inning to lift the Rockies to a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night. Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead, and Marquez made it stand until he exited after allowing four hits in six innings. But Rockies reliever Jake Bird (3-1) surrendered a single to Will Benson and double to Noelvi Marte leading off the seventh, and T.J. Friedl tied it with an RBI groundout. With their 22nd win of the season, the Rockies avoided tying the MLB record for fewest wins before the All-Star break, which is 21 and shared by the 1945 Phillies and 1952 Pirates.
