Man caught abusing reptile in Al Dhahirah
In a statement, the authority confirmed that the man was seen placing a traditional Omani coffee cup on the back of the lizard, treating the animal as a mere prop for entertainment. The act was described as a violation of both moral values and national laws protecting wildlife and animal rights in Oman.
The case has been referred to the Public Prosecution, and the authority has pledged to take all necessary legal measures to ensure accountability.
The Environment Authority condemned the behaviour, stressing that such actions do not reflect the ethics of Omani society, which is known for its respect towards nature and all living beings. It reiterated its firm commitment to enforcing the law against anyone who mistreats wildlife in any form.
'Such acts are incompatible with the humanitarian principles and values upheld by our society,' the statement read. 'We will not tolerate any form of abuse against animals and will continue to pursue violators through the legal system.'
Oman has established comprehensive legal frameworks to safeguard its diverse ecosystems and endangered species. The abuse or exploitation of wild animals for entertainment or display is strictly prohibited under national legislation, including the Environment Protection and Pollution Control Law.
Environmental experts say that reptiles like the Dhab play an important role in the desert ecosystem, and harming them can disrupt ecological balance. 'It's not just about one animal — it's about respecting an entire system of life that supports our environment,' said Dr Abdullah al Dhahri, an ecology professor.
The incident has reignited debate about the impact of social media on public behaviour, particularly when individuals seek online attention through irresponsible content. Activists and civil society organisations are calling for stricter guidelines for wildlife-related content and stronger public awareness campaigns.
'People must understand that kindness to animals is a mark of a civilised society,' said Maryam al Balushi, an environmental advocate. 'We need more outreach in schools, media and online platforms to cultivate a culture of empathy towards animals.'
The Environment Authority has urged the public to report any behaviour that harms wildlife, emphasising that protecting biodiversity is a national responsibility. Surveillance of digital platforms will continue, the authority said, as part of broader efforts aligned with Oman Vision 2040 to promote environmental sustainability.
The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of ethical conduct towards animals. Wildlife is not for amusement, and treating creatures with compassion is both a legal obligation and a moral imperative.

State Audit Institution submits annual report to His Majesty
Muscat: Sheikh Ghuson bin Hilal Al Alawi, Chairman of State Audit Institution (State Financial and Administrative Audit Authority) submitted the 2024 Annual Report on the outcomes of its work to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. Based on materiality and risk analysis, and applying the principle of sample-based auditing, SAI carried out 225 audit tasks, which resulted in 172 audit reports. The findings were communicated to the relevant entities, which responded positively by taking corrective actions and implementing SAI's recommendations. In addition, some irregularities that constituted criminal suspicions were referred to the Public Prosecution for appropriate legal action. The report also included a statement outlining SAI's efforts to promote integrity, presenting statistics on financial and administrative violations and the actions taken in response. It also covered following up on the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, as well as SAI's participation in the meetings, conferences, relevant agreements, and committees associated with it. In addition, the report detailed SAI's review of draft laws, regulations, and systems prepared by the entities subject to the audit of SAI, providing comments regarding them. The report also showcased SAI's efforts in carrying out a number of awareness activities and training programmes, and preparing related manuals aimed at protecting public fund and promoting integrity. The Annual Report also included the review of various topics within government units, such as the audit of the State's final account for the year 2024, review of tax collection and assessment, review of financial and administrative activities, and evaluation of the performance of certain directorates and departments within these units. With regard to matters related to the activities of authorities, investments, and companies, the report covered several topics related to the sectors of energy, minerals, aviation, environment, electricity, water, food security, wastewater, and other important matters that were reported to the relevant entities along with SAI's observations and recommendations. With regard to community partnership, based on the principle that protecting public fund is a joint responsibility, SAI dealt with 1,378 complaints and reports in 2024 concerning financial and administrative violations, the integrity of awarding some tenders, abuse of power, and other related issues. These were received through various communication channels, and approximately 90% of the complaints and reports have been examined and addressed. It is important to note that SAI's complaints and reports window was selected as one of the best practices by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The report also featured an overview of the key media and awareness initiatives undertaken by SAI, aimed at fostering optimal awareness and adherence to ethical practices at both institutional and societal levels. A total of 187 media and awareness programs, activities,and events were carried out in 2024. Throughout the year, SAI dedicated all its resources and capabilities to fulfilling its national role by carrying out its assigned responsibilities and achieving its objectives with high level of efficiency and professionalism. It also promoted effective institutional and societal partnership in support of the goals of sustainable development. SAI also sent copies of the Annual Report to the Council of Ministers and Shura and State Councils as per Article (66) of the Basic Law of the State, issued under Royal Decree No. 6/2021, and Article (29) of State Audit Law, issued under Royal Decree No. 111/2011. These articles stipulate that SAI shall prepare an annual report on the results of its work, and the Chairman of the Institution submits it directly to His Majesty the Sultan. A copy of the report is also sent to the Council of Ministers, State and Shura Councils before the end of the following financial year. The report included several topics resulting from SAI's exercise of its mandates and audit of government units, authorities, investments, and companies subject to its audit, in accordance with the approved 2024 annual audit plan. The execution of these tasks took into consideration the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and was guided by the principles, foundations, and standard guidelines of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI), particularly with regard to comprehensiveness, clarity, conciseness, accuracy, objectivity, and audit manuals.

ROP arrests three for trafficking, 47 women for immoral acts
Muscat: Three people, including an Omani citizen and two Egyptian nationals, have been arrested on charges of human trafficking in Muscat. The operation was carried out by the Muscat Governorate Police Command in cooperation with the Special Taskforce Police Command. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) also arrested 47 women of various nationalities for engaging in acts contrary to public morals and decency. The group comprised 21 Egyptian nationals, 10 Iranians, eight Pakistanis, four Thais, two Uzbeks and two Moroccans. The ROP said legal action is being taken against all those involved, and investigations are continuing.

Nakhal court jails expat business owner over failure to fulfil contract
Nakhal – The Primary Court in Nakhal has sentenced the owner of a commercial establishment to one year in prison and ordered his deportation after convicting him of failing to fulfil a furniture installation contract. The case began when the Consumer Protection Department in Barka received a complaint from a customer who had contracted the establishment to customise and instal sofas for his home. The agreed cost was RO600, with a completion deadline of three months. However, the establishment failed to deliver the items within the stipulated period, despite repeated assurances. With no resolution in sight, the consumer escalated the matter to authorities. After attempts to reach an amicable settlement failed, the case was referred to the Public Prosecution, which launched an investigation and forwarded it to the court. During the trial, the court found the defendant guilty of a commercial misdemeanour and handed down a one-year jail sentence. It also ordered the deportation of the business owner following the completion of the prison term. Additionally, the court directed the defendant to pay RO500 in civil compensation to the complainant. The Consumer Protection Authority has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and taking strict legal action against violators of the law.
