Brits know more about Prince Harry's ex and Rooney's first car than own families

Daily Mirror2 days ago
A study of 2,000 adults found more than one in 10 know more about famous faces than their family and friends, with many able to correctly identify the first partners of royalty and sports stars
A quirky poll reveals Brits are more clued-up on celeb trivia than their own family history, with only 29% aware of who their mum first stepped out with and a mere 19% clued into their dad's early romances.
34% of people could pinpoint Chelsy Davy as Prince Harry's initial famed flame. Meanwhile, 26% recollected that Wayne Rooney kicked off his driving days with a Ford SportKa, but just 21% knew what car their mum first owned. Commissioned by National Rail on the industry's behalf, the survey promotes a fresh twist on the '36 Questions' game aimed at fostering deeper connections and sparking meaningful chat among mates and relatives.

Dr Madeleine Mason Roantree, collaborating with the brand, pointed out, "Many of us assume we know our loved ones better than we actually do."
She added: "But research, and everyday experience, show us that we often have blind spots and gaps in our understanding of those around us."
The study also showed plenty of folks haven't quizzed themselves, with 40% unsure how they came by their name, though a notable 47% could tell the origin stories of the Beckham offspring's names.

Regrettably, the hesitation to dive into personal queries can bring about remorse; after losing a parent, 30% wished they'd delved into grandparents' tales. And for 27%, chatting about their elders' joyous moments remains an unfulfilled desire.
While 57% of people are keen to know more about their relatives, a fifth confess they're clueless on how to kickstart these deeper dialogues.

The findings also highlight that train journeys are top spots for catching up thanks to minimal distractions and ample quality time (59%), offering an unbeatable setting for strengthening ties.
TV personalities George and Larry Lamb tried out National Rail's '36 Questions to Connect', acknowledging their own challenges in carving out meaningful conversation time.
Larry commented: "I'm so lucky to have a very close relationship with my kids but life's so busy, it's often hard to find the time to sit down and have a proper chat, connect, and have those more deep and meaningful conversations - but on the train you can."
He added, "I really enjoyed playing 36 Questions to Connect with my son George, reminiscing on past experiences and sharing a few stories that we didn't know about each other."
Expressing surprise, he noted, "I didn't realise he didn't actually know what my first job was, and there's a few things I learnt about him too."

The six poshest pickleball courts to play on

Once dismissed as a mere child's pastime in northwest America during the Sixties, pickleball has become increasingly popular recently. Participation has soared since its post-pandemic boom circa 2022, with celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney among its fan base. Pickleball has been described as a hybrid of numerous racket sports, such as tennis, badminton, padel and ping pong. The director of spa and fitness at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Bermuda, Menique De La Rosa, explained: 'Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court with a modified tennis net. It's played in single or doubles, with players using paddles similar to the bats in table tennis to hit a plastic ball over the net. While padel is played on an enclosed court with walls that players use to bounce the ball, pickleball is played on an open court without walls.' • Rollercoasters, arcade games and giant slides — I've found the most fun-packed cruise ship De La Rosa believes the main reason pickleball has grown in popularity is because it is a low-impact sport that is 'easy' to learn, which is appealing to all fitness abilities and ages. With this in mind, it's unsurprising that luxury resorts across the globe are capitalising on the boom, integrating pickleball courts, fitness retreats, coaching programmes and private clinics into their offerings. From the Maldives to the Mediterranean, here are the poshest places to play, and be seen playing, pickleball all year. Situated in the north Male Atoll, Kagi Maldives is home to the first dedicated pickleball court in the Maldives. Just take a 15-minute seaplane or 60-minute boat transfer from Velana International airport and you can set to work perfecting your pickleball skills. Kagi's all-weather court is available for guests to use all year for free. Arrange your own match with fellow guests or book lessons to sharpen your backhand. Afterwards guests can relax at the overwater Baani Spa, which is the largest in the archipelago, dine across four on-site restaurants or toast your triumph with a nightcap at the trio of bars. With roots in the 1920s, this heritage resort offers members exclusive access to the award-winning Sonoma Golf Club, its tennis and pickleball facilities, as well as the high-tech gym. Reserve a court to play one-on-one or friendly doubles using the complimentary rackets or book drop-in drills, a private lesson or group clinic with a resident professional. Relax post-match in the renovated 40,000 sq ft spa powered by natural thermal waters. As Fairmont Sonoma is located in the famous Sonoma wine region it is worth bookmarking a trip to a vineyard. Better yet, sample the finest vintages on the resort's Vintner Member Programme after a farm-to-table feast at the Clubhouse Grill Restaurant. • Outdoor courts and influencers — a whole new ballgame for squash Hamilton Princess renovated its facilities in 2023 to incorporate four pickleball courts into the tennis courts. These can be found at the Princess Beach Club on a private cove in Sinky Bay, located just a 20-minute Jitney drive from the main resort. The pink and blue courts are apt considering the resort's candy-coloured exterior, which has affectionately earned it the nickname the Pink Palace. The equipment and courts are available to use daily between 10am and 5pm, all free of charge. Guests can also book lessons with the on-site pickleball professional. Enjoy a post-pickleball aperitif at the Beach Club Kitchen or a lunchtime snack at the Duchess Café and Gelateria. Come dinner, choose between locally sourced surf and turf at Intrepid restaurant, the relaxed ambience at the Crown and Anchor or fine dining at 1609 Bar and Restaurant with sunset views of Hamilton Harbour. This exclusive luxury hideaway on Crete's northern coast opened its first pickleball court in May 2024 at its Racquet Club, which also has two tennis courts and a padel court. Guests of all ages and abilities can book the pickleball one for €40 per hour. If you wish to hone your forehand, guests can sign up to private sessions for €90 per hour or a complimentary 60-minute group clinic with the on-site coach, which is available from May to October. Off the court, Elounda Peninsula boasts an immense 420 sq ft pool overlooking a blue flag private sandy beach, a Six Senses Spa and four dining restaurants, including Elies Beach House, where the menu has been curated by the nutritionist and bestselling author Emily English. • Paris elite are hooked on sweet science of boxing This prestigious eco-friendly resort boasts eight courts — two of which are dedicated to pickleball. One-on-one pickleball lessons, as well as private family sessions, can be booked at a cost ($100 for a 30-minute tuition or $200 for 60 minutes). However, the professional coaching clinics are only available Tuesdays to Friday from 10 to 11am or 4 to 5pm. Off-court activities include sailing lessons, a two-night sea-scape on a luxury catamaran or snorkelling along the half-mile wilderness beach, which is one of the world's best beaches. Alternatively, book a soap-making masterclass, enjoy a spa visit or have a Caribbean feast at six on-site restaurants. Tucked beside an 18,000-acre nature reserve, Amanyara offers a private sanctuary to hone your pickleball technique. Its pickleball court — introduced in 2019 — joins the resort's four clay Har-Tru tennis courts, football pitch, comprehensive fitness centre, as well as Pilates, boxing and yoga studios. The Amanyara Legends Programme invites elite athletes, such as Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova, to lead exclusive retreats, while the pickleball professional Wes Burrows will helm an expert clinic in November. Although court access is complimentary for guests, coaching sessions start from $185 per hour — an investment if you're determined to win Amanyara's Pickleball Tournament. Elsewhere, explore the tropical landscape on a private eco-tour of the Northwest Point National Park, take to the waters on a paddleboard, kiteboard, kayak or Hobie Cat, or de-stress at one of the spa's four pavilions. Hungry pickleballers can enjoy the Asian-inspired menu at the Restaurant, a Mediterranean-centric menu at the Beach Club or the Bar's all-day dining. Private dining is also available.

The show-stopper of a dress features a classy halter neck and cut-out detailing just above the chest. Finished with a leaf print at the hem, this stunning number is an elegant addition to your collection this summer. The styling options are also seemingly endless - dress it up with strappy heels and statement earrings for a classy dinner, or just throw it on with flip flops for an effortless look on the beach with a bikini underneath. You can find the frock in store and online, but you'll have to be quick to avoid missing out. I wasn't going to spend thousands on a wedding dress so got an Oh Polly one for £75 - no one would know it wasn't pricey Reviewing the five-star dress, one fashion fan said: ''Been looking for this shape and style of dress at a high street level for a while. ''Bought the 10 (am usually a 10-12, am 5ft 6 for reference) and this is a good fit and length for me. It's a bit roomy over the bust but I am on the smaller side on top. ''For a little more money I would have loved the inclusion of pockets (it has none). More colours please. How to dress in a heatwave SUMMER is finally here with temperatures soaring this weekend, but it has been so long since we dressed for the warmer weather - what should we wear? The Sun's fashion team is here to help with a cut-out-and-keep guide to heatwave attire. Clemmie Fieldsend and Abby McHale reveal the ultimate dos and don'ts so that you never suffer from unsightly tan lines, sweaty patches or wardrobe malfunctions again. Cover up While you might be tempted to put on your skimpiest outfit when the mercury rises above 25C, it has actually been proven that staying covered up can keep you cooler. We're not saying wear your winter coat and wrap up. You should wear a light breathable fabric such as cotton - look for flowy midi skirts, dresses or wide leg trousers which will billow and create a nice cool breeze for you as you walk. Prepare for extremes With our unpredictable weather, it's not uncommon to see either someone in hotpants with goose-pimpled legs after an unexpected downpour, or at the other end of the spectrum, someone still wearing their winter tights in 30C heat. When you're on the fence, opt for a loose co-ord that will keep you cool but not expose you to the elements if it rains. Wear shorts Yes, you can wear shorts - and at any age. The key is getting the length just right and longer shorts are all the rage this year. Short shorts are of course allowed but they won't make you any cooler. If anything, micro-shorts can make you feel hotter. Plus, they are wedgie inducing, often too tight and often show off rather too much bum cheek. Wear white White is not the easiest to keep clean but it is the best shade for a heatwave, and looks effortlessly chic. It doesn't absorb light like black but instead, reflects it. It's also a shade that never goes out of style. If you do get the odd suncream smear on your whites, quickly dab with hand soap and water, rub in with a brush and then wash as normal. Don't show bra straps Whilst everyone wants to wear strappy clothing in the summer, there really is nothing classy about your bra straps being on show - especially when they're the opposite colour to your top. Instead, if you are plumping for a strappy top, stick a strapless bra underneath. Don't attempt a boob tube The boob tube has got to be one of the most faffy and unflattering pieces of clothing you can own. Yes, you will avoid shoulder strap tan lines, but you will spend the whole day pulling your top up and trying to keep your boobs in place. Come evening, you will have grubby fingerprints all over and will have no doubt experienced the odd nip slip. Don't choose espadrilles Espadrille wedges were once Kate Middleton's go-to summer shoe but they have well and truly fallen off the fashion wagon. While noughties ballet flats are back, the espadrille is yet to have its revival. It's one of those fashion items that Gen Z won't be seen dead in, and have even dubbed 'the granny sandal'. For now, opt for a ballet flat or a sandal. Don't wear crochet The crochet trend is nice enough and while it looks great on the likes of Love Island presenter Maya Jama, it's simply not practical. If the sun is out, chances are, you'll end up with tragic tan lines like a mosaic. Plus, it's essentially knitwear - hot and itchy. For men, knitted polos have also crept into the fashion fold, masquerading as summer wear but they are made from synthetic materials and induce swear. Wear at your own risk. ''Light weight beige requires skin colour underwear - but as it is floaty you can't see everything underneath which is good.'' Another fan of the supermarket said: ''Perfect fit! As it was a flowy dress I sized down and I'm so glad I did- beautiful dress looks so chic and expensive I have worn my with a little waist belt and looks fab!'' Someone else was just as thrilled with their purchase and described the affordable dress as ''absolutely gorgeous''. ''I'm normally a 10-12, but bought a 10. Fits lovely and looks / feels more expensive than it is!'' Meanwhile, a fourth commented: ''I put this in my basket 3 times, went to checkout and it was removed due to being out of stock(lots of demand) finally got my hands on it and wow! ''Love it, perfect for round bellies like myself but still wanting to look and feel super comfy, this is the one for you!''

One in four Brits want T in the Park comeback as TRNSMT gets underway

Tens of thousands of revellers will descend on Glasgow Green for TRNSMT this weekend, but music fans want TITP back too. TRNSMT has returned this weekend, with tens of thousands of revellers heading to a sun-soaked Glasgow Green. Scotland's biggest festival will be headlined by 50 Cent, Biffy Clyro, and Snow Patrol this year. The event has been running since 2017 - bar a one-year hiatus in 2020 during the height of the Covid pandemic - and was launched as an alternative to the iconic T in the Park, which was axed after 2016. But despite it being nearly a decade since music lovers were last at TITP, many are still longing for a comeback. In fact, a new survey by Slingo found it is the festival that Brits want to make a return more than any other. More than one in four UK music lovers are clamouring for the legendary festival, which enjoyed its best years at Balado in Perthshire, to be relaunched. An impressive 26 per cent of those involved in the 2,000-strong study chose TITP as the event they'd love to see staged once again. It comfortably beat competition from V Festival (16%) and Sundown Festival (10%). Other popular events that people wanted to see again included The Big Chill (8%), Bestival (7%), and Lovebox (6%). T in the Park launched in 1994, with the name coming from the main sponsor, Tennent's Lager, and its location, Strathclyde Park. In 1997, as the festival grew in size and popularity, it moved to the disused Balado airfield in Perthshire. At its peak, a whopping 255,000 punters enjoyed the festival in 2013, dubbed T20 as it was the 20th anniversary. With the majority of revellers camping, the village of Balado briefly became one of the most populated spots in the country for one weekend each year. After 2014, TITP moved 20 miles away to Strathallan Castle due to concerns over a system that involved gas pipes running underneath the Balado site. The 2015 festival was marred by complaints about poor transport links, with revellers being stuck for hours due to the lack of trackways in car parks and drop off areas. The following year, two 17-year-olds died in unrelated incidents, while an ATM full of cash was stolen from the campsite. Police Scotland recorded 429 crimes, including launching an investigation into the rape of an 18-year-old woman. Following these problems, organisers DF Concerts axed TITP, replacing it with TRNSMT for 2017. In 2019, festival director Geoff Ellis confirmed that it would not be returning as it "ran its course". Despite the bosses seemingly quashing any rumours of a comeback - including shooting down a rogue Twitter account using the name TITPofficial that touted a 2026 reboot - music lovers are still keen on seeing it again. It may not have the hype of Glastonbury, but it attracted some huge names and was a massive success in its time. Rage Against The Machine, Blur, and Primal Scream headlined the inaugural festival, with The Prodigy, Pulp, and Fatboy Slim all playing in the 1990s. Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Eminem, Kasabian, Jay Z, Swedish House Mafia, Green Day, and Muse were among the big names to play in Balado, with The Stone Roses, Calvin Harris, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers headlining the final event in 2016. Geoff Ellis' comments back in 2019, unfortunately, appear to have ended the conversation about any potential return, especially with TRNSMT proving a success in Glasgow. But could Scotland do with another massive, multi-day music festival, especially one away from the big city with the opportunity for camping? It seems many Brits certainly believe so.
