Guggenheim's Rosenfield revives Danish brand selling $450,000 watches

Alex's background is in fashion and beauty marketing, and Andy is a philanthropist and the president of the financial services firm Guggenheim Partners LLC.
The three timepieces represent the revival of a brand that traces its roots to 1773, when Danish watchmaker Jorgen Jürgensen started creating his own pocket watches—far away from the watchmaking heartlands of Switzerland and France.
Later, his son Urban took over the helm. A master of mechanics and crafts, Urban built some of the finest pocket watches of the time. The company was handed down from generation to generation until the early 1900s, when it was sold and, in the ensuing years under several different owners, its popularity declined.
The brand enjoyed a second renaissance when Swiss watch collector Peter Baumberger purchased the company in 1979 and brought British watchmaker Derek Pratt onboard to create beautiful pocket watches, some oval in shape (including the Pratt Oval, a rare masterpiece you can read about here) and others with teardrop-shaped lugs.
In 1996, Baumberger hired cult Finnish watchmaker Kari Voutilainen to work on new movements for wristwatches. Those round wristwatches featured design aesthetics such as teardrop lugs, stepped bezels and small subsidiary seconds dials, embracing a Danish minimalistic, comfortable and functional design style. Voutilainen says he honed his unique finishing skills, the distinctive techniques that define his work, while at the company.
Today, he's one of the most celebrated and award-winning independent watchmakers, known for his mastery of the art of engine turning dials by hand on vintage machines, for his incredibly complex finishes on movement parts and his complicated horological movements. While he was passionate about propelling the brand forward, Baumberger died in 2011, which ushered in a new set of owners and diminished demand.
Then, four years ago, in 2021, watch collector Andy Rosenfield purchased the Urban Jürgensen brand (with a small group of investors), with the goal to propel it into a third golden age. Already an owner of several Voutilainen watches, Rosenfield brought Voutilainen onboard, along with his own son Alex, to act as co-chief executive officers. While the Rosenfields own 85% of the business, Voutilainen (and some family and friends) own the remaining 15%.
Together the co-CEOs vowed to return Urban Jürgensen to its former glory but with a modern twist. 'Our goal is to take our Danish spirit and to create a brand that feels joyful and welcoming. The watches were designed by Kari to be appealing to both men and women,' says the elder Rosenfield.
'He designed a new case and lug shape for the watches that make them sit very comfortably on a smaller wrist.' The round cases are 39mm and 39.5mm in diameter and boast either shortened lugs or reinterpreted teardrop-designed lugs to fit nicely on the wrist.
The new Urban Jürgensen watches are made in Switzerland. They're powered by in-house movements designed by Voutilainen and made in the Urban Jürgensen workshops in Biel. Two of the three watches are based on a preexisting Voutilainen caliber that's been adapted. It features a free-spring balance wheel with direct double-wheel escapement. Each is crafted in limited numbers.
The UJ-1 watch, for instance, is built in a limited edition of just 75 pieces. Also referred to as the 250th Anniversary watch, it boasts a 39.5mm case and houses a complex gold movement with tourbillon remontoir escapement, which compensates for errors in timekeeping due to the effects of gravity and brings constant force for precision.
The watch was inspired by the Pratt Oval, with details such as hand-guilloche finishes, an asymmetric minute track and a gold subsidiary dial. Retailing for 368,000 Swiss francs ($450,000), it's crafted in either rose gold or in platinum and features a hand-finished dial in silver or gray. Three combinations will be offered in runs of 25 of each.
The plan is to create just 75 each of the other two watches as well. The UJ-2 watch (105,000 francs) is an elegant time-only watch. Created in cooperation with another top independent watchmaker, Andreas Strehler, the UJ-3 is a perpetual calendar with an instantaneous jump mechanism at midnight that keeps the moonphase accurate to within one day every 14,000 years. It retails for 168,000 francs.
The brand expects to make fewer than 100 watches in its first year, then double that in the next. Unlike Voutilainen's namesake brand, which makes about 60 watches a year, Rosenfield says Urban Jürgensen will aim to steadily grow over the course of years, focusing on developing new complications.
Currently, the watches are only available directly to consumers online.
'This collection is a tribute to Urban Jürgensen and his unique and extraordinary legacy. It's rooted in everything that defines who we are: precision, artistry, and a profound respect for the value of time,' says Voutilainen.
'We want to keep the brand rare, and while we want to grow it, we can't grow too fast. We want to keep building the most sophisticated movements and create watches with a soul.'

France handed fast-fashion giant Shein a €40 million fine on Thursday, following a year-long investigation that found the online retailer guilty of "deceptive commercial practices". France's Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) — the regulator in charge of French consumer law — revealed that Shein had misled its customers on price reductions, as well as on the scope of its "commitments concerning environmental claims". In its statement, the DGCCRF confirmed that Shein — a China-based company owned by Infinite Styles Ecommerce Limited (IELS) — had accepted the fine. The blow comes two months after the European Commission found Shein guilty of engaging in illegal commercial practices under EU law in May, following a coordinated investigation with national consumer protection authorities. Through analysing products listed as on sale on Shein's French website from October 2022 to August 2023, investigators found that 57% of products had no price reduction, 19% had a slight discount, while 11% of products actually had a price increase. "These practices, with their profusion of crossed-out prices and permanent promotions, give consumers the impression that they are getting a very good deal", stated the Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention. Under French regulation, the reference price for discounted goods is a product's lowest price during the 30 days which precede the start of a sale. On top of misleading customers, the French anti-fraud and competition agency found that Shein was "unable to justify the environmental claims made on its website", describing itself as a "responsible company" which limits its environmental impact by "reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25%." French authorities determined that these statements contradict the firm's business model, which is "based on an abundant supply of textiles at low prices." In 2020, fast fashion was estimated to account for 8-10% of global CO2 emissions. Although Shein may have been hit with a heavy fine, in recent years the company has become somewhat accustomed to public scrutiny. In January, British politicians were outraged when the online retailer refused to provide assurances that its products did not include cotton produced in the Xinjiang region of China, which has been linked to forced Uyghur labour. Meanwhile, an investigation published in 2024 by Swiss advocacy group Public Eye found that some workers at Shein factories were still working 75-hour weeks, despite the company's promises to improve conditions for employees.

As Moldova prepares to host a pivotal bilateral summit with the European Union this Friday in Chișinău, President Maia Sandu and her pro-European government are making a concerted push to accelerate the country's accession to the EU - potentially outpacing neighbouring Ukraine. Despite repeated hybrid attacks from Russia and economic headwinds, Moldova is eager to present its recent progress in aligning with EU standards as grounds for decoupling its enlargement track from Ukraine's. But Brussels remains cautious. A source within the Danish EU rotating presidency told Euronews that 'the decoupling of the enlargement process between Moldova and Ukraine is not for now.' EU leaders are wary that allowing Moldova to pull ahead might send the wrong signal - suggesting strategic acquiescence to Russia's destabilising goals in the region. From the EU's perspective, enlargement is not just a bureaucratic process; it's a geopolitical message. Maintaining a unified approach to Moldova and Ukraine is seen as a way to underscore solidarity and resist external manipulation. Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan, head of the EU–Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, is one of Moldova's most vocal advocates in Brussels. He argues that the small nation is not only progressing quickly but would also require a lighter lift from EU institutions compared to Ukraine. 'Integrating the Republic of Moldova into the EU will be a smaller effort,' Mureșan told Euronews. 'The integration of small countries is easier than the integration of bigger countries. Moldova is a small country, and with our support, it can achieve a lot with sums that are not significant for the EU—but are transformative for Moldova.' Growth plan and economic resilience The EU is expected to unveil a three-year, €1.9 billion growth plan for Moldova - partly funded through loans and grants with the backing of the European Investment Bank. The investment aims to boost Moldova's economy and reduce its vulnerability to external pressures, particularly from Russia. 'We know Russia blackmailed it with high energy prices,' said Mureșan. 'The country suffered under high inflation; we need to strengthen its economy.' Moldova's energy infrastructure has undergone a significant transformation since 2022. It is now connected to the European electricity grid, and the EU has financed major upgrades to its domestic distribution systems. Chişinău has also committed to generating 27% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. Despite setbacks - including a slowdown attributed to the energy shock from the war in Ukraine - the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) considers Moldova's economy resilient. In a landmark shift, over 50% of Moldovan exports went to the EU in 2024 - the highest in the country's history. Hybrid threats and strategic pressure from Russia Brussels remains acutely aware of the internal and external pressures facing Moldova. While public opinion is split between pro-Western and pro-Russian sentiment, the breakaway Transnistrian region - still under de facto Russian control - remains a source of instability. 'The Russian-speaking minority and companies in the so-called Transnistrian region benefit from European integration. More than 70% of their exports go to the European market. So I think Russia will continue to try to destabilise it,' said Mureșan, emphasising the paradox of Russian influence in the region. Security cooperation is already deepening. Under the EU–Moldova Security and Defence Partnership, the EU has allocated €197 million through the European Peace Facility (2021–2025) to modernise Moldova's armed forces. Moldova and Ukraine both applied for EU membership in March 2022 and were granted candidate status in June that year. Formal accession talks began in June 2024 - but how, and when, each country progresses remains politically sensitive. For now, Brussels appears unwilling to split the tracks. But if Moldova can continue demonstrating tangible reform, economic resilience, and geopolitical reliability, the case for accelerated accession may prove harder to ignore.

A luxury veteran, Rizzolo joins the New York-based company from fellow New Yorker, Marc Jacobs, where he served as chief merchandising officer, leaving the role last month, after four years. Prior to that, ​he was divisional vice president of global merchandising at Michael Kors, after a stint at Gucci as divisional merchandise manager. His other roles include buyer for Burberry, associate merchandiser at Calvin Klein, and assistant merchandiser at Gap.
