Farnham's Downing Street to shut temporarily as part of roadworks
Improvement works in a Surrey town will continue on Monday in preparation for temporary road closures next town centre is to get wider pavements and more pedestrian controlled crossings, while two-way traffic will be introduced in parts of Downing Street and The County Council (SCC) will start work on the eastern side of Downing Street on Monday, but the temporary closure will only take effect from 18 that date until 1 November, Downing Street will remain closed to through-traffic north of Lower Church Lane. From 18 August the lower section of Downing Street, between Longbridge junction and Lower Church Lane, will open to two-way traffic. This permanent change to the road network means Waggon Yard car park will remain open during the closure on Downing Street. Going forward, this change will mean people will be able to exit the car park and travel to south Farnham without driving around the town centre. Works to introduce a new junction layout at the junction of Longbridge, Union Road and Victoria Road which began in May are expected to last until mid-August.

DRIVERS already hammered by soaring motoring taxes could face fresh pain at the pump with a fuel duty hike. Rachel Reeves is understood to be 'considering everything' at the next Budget after her welfare U-turn — prompting fears for motorists. Top Tory Dame Priti Patel said a hike would mean a 'betrayal of working people'. The AA says motorists are already being squeezed, with Vehicle Excise Duty rising by £30 since 2022, plus millions more paid in parking charges, tolls and congestion fees. AA boss Edmund King also warned any rise at the pumps 'could be catastrophic' for the UK economy. He added: 'The added danger is increased duty simply fuels higher inflation. The strong message to the Chancellor is 'keep it down'.' The AA says motorists are already being squeezed from all sides, with Vehicle Excise Duty jumping from £165 to £195 since 2022, and millions more paid in parking charges, tolls and congestion fees. Drivers of older cars, including popular models like the Ford Fiesta and VW Golf, also face a £160 tax hike when they are eventually forced to upgrade to newer vehicles. The Sun's Keep It Down campaign has helped freeze fuel duty since 2011 - saving drivers thousands but ministers are under pressure to find cash after billions were pledged to reverse planned welfare cuts. A Treasury spokesperson said: 'We extended the fuel duty cut this year, saving drivers £3billion, and we're investing £1.6billion to end the pothole plague by fixing up to seven million extra potholes.' Pressed on whether she would raise taxes, Reeves said: 'Of course there is a cost to the welfare changes that parliament voted through this week and that will be reflected in the budget. 'But I'm also very, very clear that [the] stability that we've been able to return to the economy, which has enabled the Bank of England to cut interests rates four times, is only possible because of the fiscal discipline which is underpinned by the fiscal rules. "And we'll be sticking to those because they're absolutely vital for the living standards of working people and also the costs that businesses face.' 1

McLaren expect Ferrari to be in the fight at Silverstone
SILVERSTONE, England, July 4 (Reuters) - Runaway leaders McLaren expect old rivals Ferrari to be fighting them for victory at the British Grand Prix after a strong showing by Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in Friday practice. Lando Norris was top of the timesheets overall but Hamilton, record nine-times winner at Silverstone, was quickest in the first session and both Ferraris beat McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri in the second. It is still early in the weekend, and weather conditions can change, but McLaren duly took notice. "They looked good, both in the qualifying runs and the longer runs as well," said Piastri, who leads Norris by 15 points after 11 of 24 races. "I think they're in the fight this weekend which is interesting to see." Ferrari, second overall, are the only top-four team yet to win this season, or take pole position for a regular grand prix rather than a sprint. They were McLaren's closest rivals in Austria last weekend, however, with Leclerc third and Hamilton fourth in a race won by Norris with Piastri second. Silverstone should play to Ferrari's strengths with its high-speed corners and long straights and the team also successfully debuted a new floor in Austria. "In general the Ferraris have been very, very quick today and they shall be tomorrow," Norris told F1 television. "So I think we have a bit of work to do." McLaren boss Zak Brown also highlighted the red cars' speed. "The Ferraris look very strong over one lap and race pace. A little early but Ferrari look very tough," the American told Sky Sports television.
