Carlos Rodriguez pulls out of Tour de France with fractured pelvis
VIF, France — Ineos-Grenadiers rider Carlos Rodriguez has pulled out of the Tour de France with a fractured pelvis ahead of Thursday's monster Alpine stage to the ski resort of Courchevel.
Rodriguez crashed on Wednesday and hospital scans confirmed the fracture, his team said in a statement a few hours before the start of Stage 18.
'Carlos is in good spirits and remains under the close supervision of our medical team,' Ineos-Grenadiers said. 'He will now return home to focus on recovery and the rehabilitation process.'
The Spanish rider was 10th overall in the general classification, more than 20 minutes behind race leader and three-time Tour champion Tadej Pogačar.
The three-week race finishes on Sunday in Paris.
Tour de France riders will tackle three extremely difficult ascents during Stage 18, including the 26.4-kilometre (16.5-mile) daunting climb of the Col de La Loze up to the finish.
At 2,304 metres of altitude, La Loze is the highest summit in this year's Tour. Two years ago, Jonas Vingegaard dropped Pogačar there on his way to his second Tour title.
Vingegaard has been second best to Pogačar this year, lagging four minutes and 15 seconds behind his rival overall.

The roster includes the six players — McDavid, Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, Brayden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Sam Reinhart of the Florida Panthers — named to the team in June. The list features all 24 players from Canada's championship-winning squad at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, including the same trio of goaltenders — Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues, Adin Hill of the Vegas Golden Knights and Sam Montembeault of the Montreal Canadiens. Canada won its third gold medal in four Games, the last time NHL players participated in the Olympics in 2014. On the women's side of things, Hockey Canada has invited 30 players to the national women's team orientation camp, also being held in Calgary. The national governing body of hockey also is summoning 17 para hockey players for presentations and meetings, and team-building opportunities for the upcoming season. Four goaltenders, 10 defenders and 16 forwards have been invited to the women's camp, including 17 who helped Canada beat the United States 3-2 in the final to win a gold medal in 2022 in Beijing. Women's Olympic rosters in Italy will be 23 players. Marie-Philip Poulin, Sarah Nurse, Brianne Jenner, Laura Stacey, Natalie Spooner, Renata Fast, Jocelyne Larocque and goaltenders Ann-Renee Desbiens and Emerance Maschmeyer are among the veterans. Twins deal Griffin Jax to Rays; Ty France, Louis Varland to Jays
(Photo credit: Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images) The Minnesota Twins, who sit in fourth place in the American League Central, finished off their liquidation sale by making deals with a pair of AL East teams ahead of Thursday's deadline. The Twins dealt right-handed reliever Griffin Jax to the Tampa Bay Rays, landing right-handed starter Taj Bradley in return. And Minnesota shipped infielder Ty France and right-hander Louis Varland to the Toronto Blue Jays for rookie outfielder Alan Roden and left-handed prospect Kendry Rojas. Jax, 30, has spent his entire five-year major league career with Minnesota and is 1-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 50 relief appearances this season. He had a heated face-to-face with Twins manager Rocco Baldelli on Wednesday after being inserted into a blowout loss to the Boston Red Sox in the ninth inning. He gave up three singles on 12 pitches before Baldelli pulled him for position player Kody Clemens. Jax was angry with the odd decisions but later said he apologized to Baldelli. While Jax gets a change of scenery in Tampa Bay, the Twins acquired a young arm in Bradley, 24, who is 6-6 this season with a 4.61 ERA in 21 starts. Across three years with the Rays, Bradley has gone 19-25 with a 4.70 ERA and thrown 378 strikeouts in 354 innings. France, 31, played 101 games in his first season with Minnesota after previous stops with San Diego, Seattle and Cincinnati. France is batting .251 this season with six homers and 44 RBIs. A 2022 All-Star selection, France is a career .262 hitter with 80 homers, 356 RBIs and a .736 OPS. Varland, 27, is a St. Paul native and went to college in the Twin Cities before being drafted by Minnesota in 2019. He has made 51 appearances out of the bullpen this season, pitching to a career-best 2.02 ERA while amassing a 3-3 record. He's 8-14 with a 4.62 ERA in 89 career games (22 starts) for the Twins. Roden, 25, has batted .204 with one home run and eight RBIs in 43 appearances as a rookie. Rojas, 22, has gone 1-3 with a 3.46 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) this season across four minor league levels.
