Daily Record06-06-2025
Scotland has birthed many musical icons and these are the best ones, according to locals
Music fans have shared their "favourite Scottish musicians". Artists and bands from a large range of genres have been named among the best.
Scotland has a long history of producing world-famous musicians. From the Bay City Rollers in the 1970s to contemporary acts such as Lewis Capaldi, there are more legendary Scots music acts than you might think.

One music buff recently took to social media to ask others their top musicians from Scotland. Posting on Reddit on Wednesday, June 4, they questioned: "What's your favourite Scottish musician?

"There are way more of them than I thought."
The post has since received more than 85 comments from fellow music enthusiasts. Many were quick to share their top Scottish musicians.
One of the top responses to the question named Elizabeth Fraser as the number one Scottish musician. Best known as the vocalist for the band Cocteau Twins, Fraser is famous for her distinct style and operatic vocals.
Cocteau Twins achieved critical and commercial success throughout 1980s and 1990s. Their most well-known album is Heaven or Las Vegas from 1990, which has become a cult favourite and routinely appears on lists of the greatest albums of all time.
Elsewhere, one music fan stated that Boards of Canada was their favourite Scottish band. Despite the name, Boards of Canada was formed in Edinburgh in the late 1980s.
The electronic music duo became popular following the release of their first full album Music Has the Right to Children in 1998. Since then, they have released acclaimed albums such as The Campfire Headphase in 2005 and Tomorrow's Harvest in 2013.
Meanwhile, another Reddit user wrote that Frightened Rabbit was their number one Scottish music act. Frightened Rabbit was a Scottish indie rock band that formed in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders in 2003.

The band are known for acclaimed albums such as Sing the Greys and The Midnight Organ Fight, released in 2006 and 2008 respectively. Frightened Rabbit was headed by musician Scott Hutchison, who tragically died in 2018.
Another contemporary Scottish act named by one music buff as their favourite is Lauren Mayberry. Originating from Stirling, Mayberry is the vocalist and percussionist of the band CHVRCHES.

CHVRCHES formed in Glasgow in 2011, and are renowned for their synth-pop sound. The group have released critically and commercially successful albums such as The Bones of What You Believe, Every Open Eye, and Screen Violence—the latter two of which peaked at number one on the Scottish albums chart.
Meanwhile, one Reddit user stated that their favourite Scottish music act is Paolo Nutini from Paisley in Renfrewshire. Nutini's first two albums, These Streets and Sunny Side Up, achieved major success around the world thanks to singles such as Last Request and Candy.
Other Scottish acts named by music fans as being their favourite include The Blue Nile, Orange Juice, and Belle and Sebastian. Elsewhere, others chose Teenage Fanclub, Mogwai, and Primal Scream.

Erotic novelist Sophie Gravia used chatbot to break up with boyfriend

When faced with the daunting task of ending a relationship where the spark simply fizzled, Sophie Gravia turned to artificial intelligence for a helping hand. The award-winning Scottish author, known for her erotic fiction novels, could not think how to break up with her boyfriend so she outsourced the problem to an AI chatbot. The 33-year-old writer found herself dating a man who was by all accounts perfectly nice. However, despite his good qualities, Gravia just couldn't find that elusive connection. 'He was a nice person, couldn't fault him in any way but I just wasn't into it,' she confessed on her BBC Situationships podcast that she co-hosts with Christine McGuinness. 'When I was with him, I don't know if he was maybe a wee bit boring and there was no spark.' As she was struggling to find the right words to let him down gently, a friend suggested an unconventional solution: artificial intelligence. Intrigued, Gravia downloaded an AI app. She explained her predicament to the chatbot, asking it to craft a break-up message that wouldn't hurt her boyfriend's feelings, essentially an 'it's not you, it's me' scenario. 'They gave me this … text message to write and honestly it was great,' Gravia recalled. She personalised the message slightly, adding names and a touch of Scottish flair, before sending it off last year. The digital parting wasn't entirely smooth sailing, as the man tried to call her. Gravia, still relying on her AI confidante, even copied and pasted his subsequent text message back into the app, asking for a reply. When the conversation lingered and she felt uncomfortable, she instructed the AI to 'be more firm', which it readily did, crafting an even more direct message. Although her friends advocated a more blunt approach, Gravia believed the AI delivered a far kinder message than she ever could have. 'AI wrote it very nicely, a lot nicer than me or any of my friends,' she said, giving the chatbot a 'ten out of ten'. Gravia, a former nurse, burst onto the literary scene with her self-published debut A Glasgow Kiss in 2021, and went on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies of her popular novels. Now, it seems, she's not just a master of fiction, but also a pioneer in the art of the AI-assisted break-up.

Horror fans ‘terrified' after disturbing VHS recordings appear in US towns

Horror film fans are going to be sleeping with one eye open after a series of very disturbing VHS recordings started appearing in the US. Users on Reddit, Instagram, and TikTok are still desperately seeking answers for the unexplained videos… but it seems no one can help. In a number of States, people are discovering VHS tapes featuring three hours of different horror scenes, which they reckon could be part of some new twisty marketing campaign for an upcoming movie. Having taken to social media to exchange findings and theories, it was soon realised that the videos all showed the same footage, which has also appeared on YouTube. On YouTube, we can see that the three-hour, 42-minute-long feature has been filmed in black and white and with night vision cameras. Titled 'WHITEFACE' and uploaded on June 27 in a bid to attract people with more knowledge, the VHS has already clocked up 1,000 views on the one platform alone. In the description, the uploader notes six locations where tapes have been found so far. These include a Hollywood video store, a bar in Nashville, a thrift store in Orlando, and an art gallery in Virginia. Meanwhile, over on TikTok, horror fanatics are losing their minds with all the speculation. TikToker Nicolas Curcio's video, currently with over 18,000 likes, sees him dissect the events, describing it as: 'This is either one of the best art projects ever or a case of the possible first-ever real found footage horror film.' For context, 'found footage horror' is a subgenre of horror films that 'uses a style of filmmaking characterised by the use of 'discovered' video recordings.' The recordings are typically presented as if they were made by the characters themselves. It's a genre that has had huge commercial success in the past, famous examples being 2007's Paranormal Activity, 2014's Creep, and, more recently, Late Night with the Devil, released in 2024. The TikTok creator goes on to say the discovered VHS footage does not contain any recognisable actors, but it mostly appears to be just a guy with a white-painted face wandering around LA. At one point, he's around Universal Studios. In some of the creepier moments, he films random people or even follows them home and into unlocked houses, harassing one woman at a bus stop for 30 minutes as she tries to ignore him. While some believe the whole thing is 'fake', others think it could be a student film that's made its way online. However, sceptics reckon it's even too amateurish for that, given that 'Whiteface' has no titles or end credits, nor is it edited. In the comments of the semi-viral TikTok video, people had plenty of thoughts. '$5 this is viral marketing for a movie that's going to drop later this year', declared @portiaisheeere. 'feels very fake especially 2 being found at similar times, starting on reddit and no real footage', @gargledmesh countered. 'it's 3 hours long and back in the day it was hard to edit tape to tape, so it could be an unfinished project – therefore even the lack of credits. now anyone can edit just on their phones, back then it was a different story', speculated @thedearone_. 'Quite clearly viral marketing for a movie lol nothing will ever top Blair witch though these companies have been trying to mimic it for years gets boring when everytime the film they're trying to get you to watch is boring', @bluish vented. The Blair they were referring to is, of course, 1999's horror/mystery movie The Blair Witch Project, which followed three students who vanished after venturing into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend. Only their footage was left behind. At the time, the indie flick had so many people convinced it was actually real, largely thanks to the prior release of a mockumentary titled Curse of the Blair Witch, which was also presented as 100% genuine, featuring interviews with so-called family members of the students and historical experts. More Trending Basically, the doc set the whole thing up, and it took a lot of people a while to realise it was just a marketing ploy, which is what some believe is happening again with Whiteface (2025). Having none of it, however, TikTok's @bbgst blasted: 'why is everyone so doubtful these days, why not just believe instead of thinking its a movie marketing thing or something'.
