Robin Goodfellow's racing tips: Best bets for Saturday, July 19

Daily Mail18-07-2025
Mail Sport's racing expert Robin Goodfellow delivers his tips for Saturday's meetings at Market Rasen, Doncaster, Newmarket, Haydock, Cartmel, Newbury and Ripon.
It was 2019 when a three-year-old last won the Steventon Stakes (1.50 Newbury) but RASHABAR (NAP) can buck the trend when he drops down in class. He landed last season's Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot as an 80-1 outsider and since then he has featured in Group One contests won by Whistlejacket, Camille Pissarro and Field Of Gold. This step up in trip to 1m2f should suit him at a track where he finished second in the Greenham Stakes on his reappearance this season.
In the Summer Plate (3.12 Market Rasen), last year's winner SURE TOUCH (NB) holds strong claims of a repeat success. A neck winner in 2024 from Soul Icon, now rated 7lb higher, Sure Touch runs here off a 1lb lower mark under Sean Bowen. Cheekpieces are on for the first time and he looks the one to beat.

2.00 CURRAGH: MOLTOPHINO beat a subsequent winner at this course two starts back and ran well to be placed in a big-field handicap last time. He has a good draw for this return to the Curragh.
2.57 NEWBURY: ELITE STATUS (NAP) is unbeaten in two starts over today's course and distance, including a victory in this race last year. He is dropping down in class today.
8.15 DONCASTER: YANIFER, who has solid form in a higher class, ran well to finish second at York last time out. He can go one better today and record a second course-and-distance win.

Who is the most likely to be relegated from the Premier League this season? Sky Bet odds revealed with the favourite to go down at just 2/7

While many discussions in the lead-up to the start of the Premier League this month are surrounding who will be the eventual champions in 2025-26 - the relegation battle is just as intriguing. With that in mind - let's take a look at who the favourites are with Sky Bet to be relegated to the Championship at the end of the season. As expected - all three clubs that were promoted from the 2024-25 Championship campaign are the best-backed to go back down. At the time of writing. Burnley are the shortest-priced in the market - with the Clarets valued at a very short 2/ 7. Meanwhile, fellow promoted sides Sunderland and Leeds round out the three favourites, with the pair both odds-on at 4/11 and 10/11 respectively. It is worth noting that all three promoted sides in 2024-25 were relegated at the conclusion of last season. For those anticipating one or multiple of the promoted sides to maintain their position in the English top-flight - Wolves and Brentford are joint fourth-favourites at 10/3, while West Ham are fifth at 11/2. Wolves finished 16th in the table last season, while West Ham finished 14th. Wolves' upcoming campaign will be without star player Matheus Cunha - who signed a £62.5 million deal with Manchester United in June. Meanwhile, despite finishing a respectable tenth in the Premier League 2024-25, Brentford have two huge omissions this season. They lost their long-time manager Thomas Frank to Tottenham Hotspur, while star striker Bryan Mbeumo joined Manchester United. Sky Bet favourites to be relegated from the Premier League this season: Burnley 2/7 Sunderland 4/11 Leeds 10/11 Wolves 10/3 Brentford 10/3 West Ham 11/2

'Lack of firepower a real concern'

The first game of the season is not quite the time to hit the panic button, but the opening day defeat to Hearts felt entirely predictable. Could it have been prevented? That's 24 games without victory for the away team in this fixture so history would have suggested not, however I do think we could have helped ourselves a bit around pre season preparations are expected but the lack of firepower has been a real concern for the support and last night again highlighted the need, if not urgency, to get another striker in at least! We reverted to type as well and conceded soft goals. Why when we found a formula on 24 May that worked was that so quickly abandoned?A big week ahead, hopefully some signings to bolster the mood. Least it's only Celtic at home this week eh?Glen can be found at Red Tinted Glasses, external

'Total chaos' - Clement reflects on 'frustrating' Rangers stint

Rangers v Viktoria Plzen: Champions League third qualifying round first legWhen: 5 August, 19:45 BST Where: Ibrox BBC coverage: Watch live on BBC Scotland and BBC Sport website & app, plus follow live text updates and listen to Sportsound on BBC Radio Scotland Extra Former Rangers manager Philippe Clement says his time at Ibrox was hamstrung by "total chaos" at boardroom Belgian coach succeeded Michael Beale in October 2023 and won the League Cup later that also overhauled Celtic at the summit of the Scottish Premiership during his first season in charge, only to lose against Motherwell, Ross County and Celtic themselves during the run-in, missing out on the title by eight also pipped them to the Scottish Cup thanks to a last-minute Adam Idah first summer in charge was then characterised by upheaval off the executive James Bisgrove left for a role in the Middle East, chairman John Bennett stepped down for health reasons and Rangers started the season at Hampden Park due to a late shipment of materials for development works on the Copland Stand at Ibrox."That's the frustration, the frustrating part of the story," Clement told BBC Scotland's Sacked in the Morning podcast. "The first seven months, everybody was really happy about what happened in the club. There was a big change."But after that, a lot of things changed in the club and it became quite chaotic. "I never had a club or saw a club where you don't have all these positions filled during a season for six or seven months. So a lot of things happened." Clement was frustrated by a lack of communication from those in senior positions as he was left to address questions about the club's off-field says discussions were had over the summer about the long-term project required to take on Celtic, but feels the board were unwilling to express that to supporters."They said we know we don't have the money that Celtic has for the moment," Clement added. "It was quite an old squad. So we know we're going to need four, five, maybe six transfer windows to gain money and to close this gap with Celtic. "And it starts with getting young players in, develop them, make them better and sell them to build the club again where it should be."I think the board was afraid to say these things towards the fans because they were already very angry about the stadium issue."I was the only one speaking in the club because there was nobody anymore."The club has since been taken over by a US-based consortium led by private healthcare tycoon Andrew Cavenagh, but Clement feels that instability at the top of the club was a fundamental reason behind Celtic's on-field dominance during his time at Rangers. "There was a big difference about everything around the team, even maybe a bigger difference than on the pitch," he said, when asked about the gap between the Old Firm clubs. "In preparation, in everything around the club, Celtic is much more organised than Rangers. "And I was there for sure in these seven months where there was total chaos at Rangers." 'Disrespected' & 'angry' about nature of sacking Clement was dismissed in February 2025 following a league defeat by St Mirren, a result which left Rangers 13 points behind had also suffered a humiliating Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Queen's Park earlier that former Belgium defender revealed that he was informed of the decision by journalists before the club relieved him of his duties, an incident which angered him."It felt really empty," Clement said. "I was also angry that moment because all the journalists knew before me. "I got a lot of messages from Scotland, England and Belgium even, before I get a message from the club, so I was not happy with that. That's not good."I told them also that it was totally disrespectful that I felt really empty because you build something together in your full day and night with everything in the club. "And I had to do much more than you normally should do as a manager in the months before when these positions were not filled in."
