Alvin Kamara highlights a short but accomplished list of players who have worn No. 41
The New Orleans Saints are down to 41 days before their 2025 season opening game against the Arizona Cardinals. New coach Kellen Moore and his Saints will host that matchup in the Superdome to kick off their 59th NFL season. Wearing No. 41 is a familiar face, New Orleans great Alvin Kamara, who is only the ninth player in franchise history to wear that number. Here is a look at each player who did it.
Bob Newland was the first one to don 41 for the Saints and the first New Orleans draft choice to do it. A Round 7 selection in 1971, Newland played with the Saints for his only four NFL seasons. In that time, he caught 124 passes for 1,877 yards and 8 scores over 56 games. John Gilliam, the 52nd overall draft choice in 1967 (2nd round), is most famous for returning the opening kickoff in franchise history for a touchdown. Gilliam wore No. 42 during 1967 and 1968 with New Orleans. He returned to the Saints for his final NFL season in 1977, wearing No. 41 for those 10 games and 11 receptions for 133 yards.
Jimmy Rogers made the Saints as an undrafted rookie in 1980. Rogers remained with the team for five years and 72 games, the fourth longest stretch for any Saint to wear No. 41. He was mostly a backup and special teams contributor, but had 957 yards from scrimmage with 5 scores.
Toi Cook joined the vaunted "Dome Patrol" defense as an eighth-round choice in the 1987 NFL draft. Cook was a Saint for seven years and 101 games, the third longest stretch of any 41 in franchise history. Over that span, he had 16 interceptions, with 2 returned for touchdowns. He also added 4 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries. Cook and Dome Patrol linebacker Rickey Jackson both moved on to the San Francisco 49ers in 1994, where they helped the 49ers to a Super Bowl XXIX championship.
Roman Harper is the highest drafted player by New Orleans to wear No. 41. The Alabama Crimson Tide star was a second round choice in 2006, the 43rd overall selection. He was with the Saints until 2014 before moving on with the Carolina Panthers. In 2016, Harper came back to New Orleans for the final year of his 11-year NFL career. Harper played 124 regular season games with the Saints, tops among all players to wear No. 41. He had 7 interceptions, including a touchdown return, along with 15 fumbles forced and 17 sacks while averaging 68 tackles per season. In 2020, Harper was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame.
If he plays at least 10 games this season, Alvin Kamara will pass Harper for the most games played by a Saint in the 41 jersey. It will be fitting. Kamara already holds several team career records. He is the New Orleans all-time leader in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns total yards, as well as receptions, receiving yardage, and receiving scores by a running back.
A Round 3 choice from the Tennessee Volunteers in the 2017 NFL draft, Kamara is a lethal all-purpose threat that has terrorized defenses through 115 games of an eight-year career. He has earned five Pro Bowl bids and was the 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year. Expect Kamara to continue to be the centerpiece in Kellen Moore's New Orleans offense in 2025.

NFLPA selects David White as interim executive director

The NFL Players Association took a bit of time but, with teams at training camps, moved to fill its leadership void from outside the union. Player representatives voted Sunday night to appoint David P. White the NFLPA's interim executive director. The election of White, the other finalist when the union elected Lloyd Howell in 2023, came 17 days after Howell's resignation a little more than two years into his term as executive director.

NFL Veteran Rushed To Hospital After 'Illegal' Tackle At Practice Sunday

NFL Veteran Rushed To Hospital After 'Illegal' Tackle At Practice Sunday originally appeared on The Spun. A veteran member of the Colts backfield reportedly suffered a severe lower leg injury during Sunday's training camp practice after being taken down by an illegal hip-drop tackle during a live session. According to Stephen Holder of running back Salvon Ahmed was immediately taken to the hospital for X-rays after grabbing at his ankle in serious pain. Per the Colts beat reporter, Ahmed's ankle "was stuck in an awkward position" after being tackled from behind by undrafted free agent Trey Washington at the goal line and players immediately gathered around said a prayer for their teammate. The 26-year-old was then placed onto a stretcher and carted off the field. Head coach Shane Steichen talked about the situation during today's media session and explained how hard it can be to simultaneously manage injuries while also attempting to build a physical football team that's ready for the regular season. "Never want to see that happen," Steichen said. "I know we don't encourage hip-drop tackles. I know Trey's down in the dumps, and I don't think he's trying to do that. We're just trying to create an edge. ... Those [backups] are going to have to tackle come preseason." "I think training camp is where you want to create the edge and the toughness and the identity of your football team, so you have live periods," the coach explained. "There's a lot of thoughts going on in my head during that situation. I talked to some of the leaders on the team. We wanted to get that last 2-minute situation in. Felt that we needed that. They were on board with that." Ahmed also went undrafted out of Washington but caught on with the Miami Dolphins for four seasons before coming to Indy where he signed as a FA earlier this year. We certainly send our best to Ahmed and his family and hope he comes back stronger than Veteran Rushed To Hospital After 'Illegal' Tackle At Practice Sunday first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

NFLPA hires David White as interim executive director, replacing Lloyd Howell

The NFL Players Association has a new leader. The NFLPA on Sunday night announced the hiring of David White to take over as the interim executive director in a move that was necessitated by the stunning resignation of Lloyd Howell Jr. on July 17. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported that JC Tretter, the union's chief strategy officer, and Don Davis, the chief player officer, emerged as the lead candidates following Howell's departure. Tretter later resigned from his position. NFLPA CONTROVERSY EXPLAINED: What to know about grievances, Lloyd Howell, next steps One union official, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation, said that a voting player representative from all 32 teams participated in the Board vote. The person also said that on the final short list of candidates, there were multiple internal candidates and multiple external ones. The Board conducted interviews with each candidate over the last two weeks, and the process was player-led and voted on by the Board. The person also said that ultimately, the Board voted on their elected candidate this evening. NFLPA leadership initially expressed their support for Howell, but the fallout from the "Pablo Torre Finds Out" podcast's release of a 61-page arbitration report proved to be too much. The report revealed the NFLPA agreed to keep the arbitration decision from earlier this year about potential collusion by the league confidential – despite evidence that "commissioner Roger Goodell and former general counsel Jeff Pash instructed teams at the March 2022 league meeting to limit guaranteed money in players' contracts." Howell was later found to be a paid, part-time consultant for the private-equity firm The Carlyle Group since March 2023, as reported by ESPN. It highlighted a potential conflict of interest as the group was given approval by the NFL to seek a minority ownership stake in a team. More revelations regarding Howell's conduct have come to light following his resignation. On July 18, ESPN reported that Howell submitted expense reports charging the union for two visits to strip clubs. The former leader's controversial tenure was short-lived and came to an end just over two years following his hiring on June 28, 2023. Now White will be tasked with cleaning up the mess that was left behind in addition to restoring trust between the union and its membership. They won't have the luxury of time, however, as training camps are already underway and the regular season is fast approaching. NFL writer Chris Bumbaca contributed to this story.
