City to host national mayoral summit in Oct
State govt sources said that the summit is being organized on Oct 15 and 16 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who served as president of the Ahmedabad municipality over a century ago. The conclave will be themed on 'Let us Unite Together to Innovate, Lead and Transform', sources said.
Sources involved in planning of the event said that sessions of the conclave will include rethinking planning and governance frameworks, encouraging climate resilient development, catalysing digital urban features, main-streaming women and youth in urban development, redefining city investment and climate finance.
Sources said that over the recent past, Ahmedabad has implemented modernisation projects while maintaining its cultural legacy. Major projects such as the Sabarmati Riverfront development, multimodal transport hub (BRTS, AMTS and Metro), Smart City initiatives, urban greening, sports and cultural activities, and high-quality infrastructure, have been undertaken, sources said.
Ahmedabad also hosted the sixth cycle of Urban 20 (U20) 2023, one of the 11 engagement groups under G20. During India's G20 presidency, U20 India collaborated with global cities to create a roadmap for transformative urban impact and narrowing gaps between policy and implementation across governance levels. During the U20 Mayoral Summit, the state govt released the Ahmedabad Climate Resilient City Action Plan: Towards a Net Zero Future by 2070.
A heritage walk, visit to the Sabarmati Riverfront and Atal Bridge, and a visit to GIFT City are also being planned as part of the two-day conclave, sources said.

Building Pune: Pune Metro to expedite work on extended route from PCMC to Nigdi
Pune Metro rail authorities are expediting the completion of the extended segment of the Phase One route from PCMC station to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi, with the goal of making it operational six months ahead of schedule. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of this 4.413 km-long extended stretch in March last year, but the actual work began only five months later. 'The construction of the extension stretch from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi began in August last year, and the civil work is going in full swing. The deadline for completing work on the stretch is 36 months from the start of actual work, but we are planning to complete it in 30 months,' said Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director, Pune Metro Rail. Sonawane said the administrative processes for laying overhead cables on the track and the mechanical work of installing escalators and lifts have begun even before the completion of civil work. 'We don't want to waste time on completing the administrative process for the works related to the stretch, so it has been done well in advance,' said Sonawane. The route from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi is elevated and has three stations at Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi. The estimated cost of the extended route is Rs 1,048.22 crore, which covers expenses on development of intermodal integration, stations, pedestrian bridge, system and tracks, environment impact assessment, design, depot and parking on the route. The 17.4 km Metro route from Swargate to PCMC has been made operational and has received positive response from the public. This route has been extended from PCMC to Nigdi on one end and Swargate to Katraj on the other end. However, the construction on the extended underground route of 5.5 km from Swargate to Katraj is yet to start even though it is expected to be completed by February 2029 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,954.53 crore. Additionally, the second route, measuring 15.7 km from Vanaz to Ramwadi, is also fully operational. Last month, the Central Government approved its extension on both ends — connecting Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi. These two extended elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, linking fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years at an estimated cost of Rs 3636.24 crore. Meanwhile, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is developing the Metro Line-3, which will span 23 km from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar District Court. Delhi police commissioner Sanjay Arora retires, reflects on career and service
New Delhi: Delhi police commissioner Sanjay Arora retired on Thursday, marking the end of a career spanning nearly 37 years. He expressed his gratitude during a farewell parade held at the New Police Lines in Kingsway Camp. Sanjay Arora is a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre (HT photo) 'Only after I left police training and joined a police station did I learn how to prevent crimes on streets, catch criminals, handle court proceedings, fight for police rights, manage the police force, and deal with criminals with sensitivity, etc.,' Arora said. Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya flags Metro fare hike in Lok Sabha
BENGALURU: Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, speaking in the Parliament on Wednesday, flagged the steep hike in Metro fares and slammed the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) for not publishing the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) report. He urged Speaker Om Birla to instruct BMRCL through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to immediately publish the FFC report. Speaking during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Surya said, 'About four months ago (in February), BMRCL hiked the Metro fare by almost 130%. Public transport services must be affordable to the common man. This hike has resulted in steep reduction in the ridership as well.' 'Despite multiple requests over the last few months, BMRCL has not made the (FFC) report public yet. This is a democracy and in a democracy, riders deserve to know the basis of the fare hike,' Surya said. Surya said the Metro fares in Bengaluru are the highest in the country with rides above 25 km priced at Rs 90. 'Following public outcry, the BMRCL rationalised the fare structure up to a 71% hike but the fares are still hampering Metro ridership,' he said. In his Zero Hour intervention, Surya also called for the early operationalisation of the Metro Yellow Line, stating that Bengaluru is India's economic engine and is suffering from a big infrastructure deficit and the only way that traffic congestion can be addressed is through expedited Metro expansion and advancing public transport systems. He requested the MoHUA to expedite the opening of the Yellow Line and that it is expected to have an eight-lakh ridership. Surya also urged the MoHUA to expedite the approval for the Metro Red Line, which is awaiting the Union cabinet approval. The Red Line or Phase 3A of Namma Metro is a 36.59-km corridor which will link Sarjapur in the southeast to Hebbal in the north.
