AMC to sell eco-friendly Ganesh idols made from cattle dung, seeds

Ahmedabad: In a bid to promote sustainable celebrations and reduce pollution during festivals, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday approved a proposal to manufacture and sell eco-friendly Ganesh idols made from cattle dung, clay, and plant seeds. These idols will be made using mud sourced from select zero-waste ponds managed by AMC. Each idol will contain embedded plant seeds, allowing them to be immersed in home gardens after the Ganesh festival, where they will eventually sprout into plants. The idols will be available for sale online and at various AMC ward offices as well as the Sabarmati Riverfront. AMC has introduced three pricing categories — plain idols (no colour) for Rs 300, coloured idols for Rs 400, coloured idols with ornaments at Rs 500 and those with puja kits will be available for Rs 600. In another major citizen-friendly move, the AMC's standing committee decided to deliver free AMTS and BRTS bus passes directly to the homes of senior citizens, eliminating the need for them to visit ward offices. This doorstep delivery service is expected to benefit around 2.76 lakh senior citizens in the city.

City 7th slowest in India in commute crawl

Ahmedabad: Daily commute in Ahmedabad has become a test of patience. Arterial lifelines like SG Road, CG Road, and Ashram Road are now synonymous with gridlock, where traffic barely crawls and horns speak louder than engines. During weekday peak hours, commuters in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, both clock an average of 29 minutes to travel 10km, according to TomTom, a data aggregating comprehensive system that collects and analyzes real-world traffic conditions using anonymized GPS data. This makes Ahmedabad the seventh slowest city in India. Kolkata is the most slowest nationally (35 minutes). In Hyderabad, it takes 32 minutes and in Chennai, the time taken to cover the distance is 30 minutes. And, the difference between Kolkata and Ahmedabad's commute time is a mere six minutes. Globally while Kolkata is second for traffic congestion, Ahmedabad's rank is 43rd, while Mumbai is 39th owing to its higher annual rush-hour time. Annual rush hour time refers to the total number of hours a commuter spends in traffic congestion during peak hours over the course of a year. According to the data system, Ahmedabad's annual rush hour time stands at 73 hours, significantly lower than Bengaluru's 117 hours, Mumbai's 103 hours or Kolkata's 110. Yet, the city's ranks at 43rd globally. You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad The city's traffic hot zones stretch from Vastrapur and Juhapura in the west to Lal Darwaja and Kalupur in the east, where morning speeds dip to 18.8 kmph, falling further to 17.4 kmph in the evening. "Even if I leave early, I never feel in control of how long I'll take to reach, especially with factors like AMTS buses bullying traffic or scattered two-wheelers driving painfully slowly. The roads are chaotic, and planning around traffic feels like trying to predict the weather," adds Vatsalya Shah, 34, an administrative executive from Ambawadi. In central neighborhoods like Paldi, Gymkhana, and Danapith, commuters experience the city-wide average. But step outside the core — towards Sarkhej, Ambli, Vijay Park, Vikram Nagar, Asarwa, Rakhial, Ramol, Isanpur, or Ganesh Nagar—and the pace picks up. Travel times in these outer zones range from 18 to 23 minutes, revealing a paradox: The farther you live from the city's heart, the faster you move through it.

AMC plans solar-powered EV charging stations for its buses

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to complete the green transformation of the city's public transport system by powering electric buses with solar energy instead of grid electricity. In the initial phase, five EV charging stations for BRTS buses will be equipped with solar panels to create a charging infrastructure that runs on renewable energy. In all, 200 BRTS buses will be powered through these charging stations. Gradually, AMTS electric buses will also transition to solar-powered charging systems. An AMC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the electric bus charging stations at AMTS and BRTS bus terminals will be connected to solar panel systems. Initially, the solar panels will be installed at the Ranip BRTS charging station, which will function as a floating route charging station for electric buses running on the western route. The solar panel installations will then be introduced at Naranpura and Vastral charging stations and later at AMTS charging stations in Jamalpur, Vadaj, Sarangpur and other locations. The green bus project falls under AMC's Air Quality Management Cell, which is working on multiple projects to improve the city's air quality. These include new pavement roads, park and garden development, urban forests/oxygen parks, mechanical smart parking systems, CNG furnaces in crematoriums, automated traffic regulation systems and procurement of CNG buses. The cell is now working on powering electric buses with solar energy, with over 34 EV charging stations to be set up at different locations, all equipped with solar panels The AMC also implemented several solar energy projects in the past. In Feb 2024, it installed solar systems at water treatment plants in Kotarpur, Rasala and Jaspur. These installations are expected to save 1.6 to 2 million units of electricity annually. In Sep 2024, the standing committee approved a proposal to set up a 30 MW ground-mounted solar park on 120 acres in Sheradi village of Sabarkantha for Rs 154 crore. The corporation will acquire the land through a 27-year lease agreement, with the facility expected to generate 41.20 million units annually, save Rs 20.60 crore in electricity costs and reduce CO2 emissions by 37,704 tonnes per year. The AMC has also invested in wind energy projects across various talukas of Kutch, saving Rs 191.71 crore from 21 MW wind energy projects and Rs 8.75 crore from 7 MW solar plants.

City to host national mayoral summit in Oct

Gandhinagar: Ahmedabad will host a 'National Urban Conclave and Mayoral Summit' in mid-Oct this year, where various subjects related to governance of urban local bodies will be discussed by about 150 mayors of the country, along with experts in urban management subjects. State govt sources said that the summit is being organized on Oct 15 and 16 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who served as president of the Ahmedabad municipality over a century ago. The conclave will be themed on 'Let us Unite Together to Innovate, Lead and Transform', sources said. Sources involved in planning of the event said that sessions of the conclave will include rethinking planning and governance frameworks, encouraging climate resilient development, catalysing digital urban features, main-streaming women and youth in urban development, redefining city investment and climate finance. Sources said that over the recent past, Ahmedabad has implemented modernisation projects while maintaining its cultural legacy. Major projects such as the Sabarmati Riverfront development, multimodal transport hub (BRTS, AMTS and Metro), Smart City initiatives, urban greening, sports and cultural activities, and high-quality infrastructure, have been undertaken, sources said. Ahmedabad also hosted the sixth cycle of Urban 20 (U20) 2023, one of the 11 engagement groups under G20. During India's G20 presidency, U20 India collaborated with global cities to create a roadmap for transformative urban impact and narrowing gaps between policy and implementation across governance levels. During the U20 Mayoral Summit, the state govt released the Ahmedabad Climate Resilient City Action Plan: Towards a Net Zero Future by 2070. A heritage walk, visit to the Sabarmati Riverfront and Atal Bridge, and a visit to GIFT City are also being planned as part of the two-day conclave, sources said.
