Car slams into lemonade stand, critically injuring three girls, NC troopers say
It happened around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, near the intersection of Conley and Arthur Mull roads near Morganton, the Highway Patrol said in a June 11 news release.
The girls are ages 7, 8 and 9, officials said. Their identities and specifics about their injuries have not been released.
'A 2007 Chevrolet HHR was attempting to turn left from a public driveway and pulled into the path of a 2017 Nissan Altima traveling north on Conley Road,' Master Trooper Christopher Casey reported in the release.
'This collision caused the Nissan to drive off the right side of the roadway and collide with three children. The three female children, who had set up a lemonade stand in the front yard ... were transported to area hospitals in critical condition.'
The drivers were not injured, he said.
Video recorded at the scene by WSOC shows the lemonade stand was flattened, and the vehicle came to rest in a front yard with damage to its front and back ends.
The driver who collided with the lemonade stand has not been charged, officials said.
The 24-year-old Hickory woman who was driving the Chevrolet HHR was cited for 'failure to yield right of way causing serious bodily injury,' officials said.
The Nissan driver was identified as a 29-year-old woman from Forest City, officials said.
'The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed as contributing factors,' the Highway Patrol said.
Jessica Tallent, who identified herself as the mother of one of the girls, said she initially thought her daughter was killed, WCNC reported. 'We thought all three of them were dead,' Tallent told the station. 'I was bawling my eyes out.'
Her daughter's injuries were not as serious as the other girls, and the child is currently recovering at home, the station said.
Morganton is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Charlotte.

'The Inyo County Sheriff's Office is relieved to announce that Kelsey Pittman has been located alive in the state of Colorado,' the agency said in a Facebook post Tuesday. Out of respect for her and her family's privacy, the department said it would provide no other details about the case. The news closes the chapter on a months-long search that involved law enforcement agencies in multiple states. Pittman's family in North Carolina reported her missing in November. Inyo County Sheriff's deputies first became involved in the case when they responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked near Slab City on Feb. 9. Deputies found a 2009 Chevrolet HHR with North Carolina plates parked in the area. The vehicle was registered to Pittman. Deputies searched the vehicle and the area but did not find her. A missing person's investigation was launched. Even her mother came to Inyo County to join in the search, the Sheriff's Office announced earlier this month in a news release. The Slab City community is made up of RV dwellers, artists and other bohemian living off-the-grid. Conditions in the area where Pittman's vehicle was found are notoriously harsh, and hikers have been known to become disoriented in extreme heat and disappear and die in the surrounding desert. Investigators coordinated with multiple police agencies, drone pilots, cadaver dog handlers, and volunteer search-and-rescue crews to look for Pittman, until they exhausted those efforts. In announcing her discovery, Inyo County officials thanked search-and-rescue workers for their efforts.

Missing woman's empty car discovered near Slab City. Months later, she's found alive.
A North Carolina woman has been found alive in Colorado nine months after she was reported missing, authorities announced earlier this week. Kelsey Pittman, 33, was reported missing in November 2024 by her family after they lost contact with her, according to the Inyo County Sheriff's Office in Bishop, California. On Feb. 9, an unidentified individual contacted the agency, alerting officials to a suspicious vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet HHR, near Slab City, a remote California tourist attraction about 63 miles south of Joshua Tree. Many of the residents there live as part of an alternative community, which has previously been described as a 'drifter's utopia.' After locating the vehicle, police were able to confirm the car was registered to Pittman. Though police searched the car and surrounding area, they were not able to track down Pittman's whereabouts, leading to an extensive missing person investigation and search effort, authorities said in a July 22 release posted to social media. It's not clear why Pittman's car was located in California and police did not provide details regarding where she had been during her disappearance. 'Between February and June 2025, ICSO coordinated with multiple law enforcement agencies, drone teams, cadaver dog handlers, and volunteer search and rescue crews,' the statement read. 'Despite exhaustive ground and aerial searches, no additional physical evidence was found at the site.' Additional details will not be released out of respect for Pittman and her family, the sheriff's office said. 'We thank our ICSO investigative team, along with the many law enforcement partners, search and rescue volunteers, and community members who assisted in this case and helped share information,' the statement concluded.

They were there to carry out the arrest of a Oklahoma pediatrician who authorities say murdered her 4-year-old daughter and tried to stage the death as a drowning while vacationing in South Florida. Newly released body camera footage from the Oklahoma City Police Department captures the moments when 36-year-old Neha Gupta was taken into custody at her four-bedroom, three-bathroom home on July 1. Just four days earlier, her daughter, Aria Talathi, had been found lifeless in a pool around 4 a.m. at their vacation rental home in El Portal. The footage shows officers cutting across a manicured lawn before approaching the front door. They bang loudly, announcing themselves: 'Police with a warrant, open the door! Do it now!' When no one answers, they force the door open. 'Neha Gupta, come to the front door now,' one officer shouts, adding the U.S. Marshals have a warrant for her arrest. There's no response. She remains at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center after a judge denied her bond. 911 call to El Portal home In the predawn hours of June 27, officers from El Portal Police Department and paramedics from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue rushed to a 911 call reporting a child was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a home at 156 NW 90th St. in El Portal. Gupta took the officers to the backyard, where her daughter Aria was found submerged in the deep end of the pool, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, which took over the investigation from El Portal Police. The doctor and her daughter had arrived in South Florida on June 25 and were renting the house as a short-term Airbnb rental. Gupta's attorney, Richard Cooper, previously told the Miami Herald that MDSO did not conduct a full investigation before Gupta's arrest. 'Dr. Gupta fully cooperated with law enforcement and gave multiple statements that never wavered in consistency,' Cooper said. 'Rather than conduct a thorough investigation, which could require multiple autopsies and toxicology analyses, the MDSO decided to apply for a warrant for a grieving mother going through the unimaginable. We look forward to all the facts coming to light.' No water in girl's lungs: autopsy A preliminary autopsy of Aria conducted by the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's office revealed no water in Aria's lungs or stomach, ruling out drowning. Instead, doctors found bruising inside the child's cheeks and cuts in her mouth — injuries inconsistent with any resuscitation attempts, Gupta's warrant read. The autopsy findings suggested Aria had died from asphyxiation by smothering before being placed in the pool. Gupta told authorities that the day before Aria died, she and her daughter had spent the day at the beach and riding personal watercraft before returning to their vacation home and eating dinner. After their meal, she said, they shared a bed and went to sleep. At around 3:20 a.m., Gupta said she was awakened by a noise and realized Aria was no longer in bed. She told investigators she found the sliding glass door open and discovered Aria submerged in the pool. Gupta said she couldn't swim but tried to rescue her for 10 minutes before calling 911. Gupta is set to be arraigned on Aug. 7, according to court records.
