Egypt recovers two smuggled artifacts from Belgium
The move comes in light of the existing cooperation and coordination between the Egyptian Embassy in Brussels and the Belgian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economy, as well as the federal prosecutor's office of Belgium, which resulted in recovering two ancient Egyptian items, according to a statement released by the Foreign Ministry on Friday 11/7/2025.
The first artifact is a gilded wooden sarcophagus from the Ptolemaic era, while the other ancient piece is a beard of a wooden statue dating back to the ancient Egyptian civilization.
Speaking at the ceremony, Abu Zeid said that Egypt attaches great importance to restoring all smuggled artifacts in accordance with the 1970 UNESCO Convention, extending thanks to Belgium's authorities for their cooperation in recovering the two relics.
The ambassador stated that he looks forward to fostering collaboration with the Belgian government in retrieving Egyptian antiquities and raising awareness about the significance of countering the illicit trafficking of cultural property, which represents the common human heritage of the world.

He also suggested that Turkish firms based in Egypt could partner with local authorities to create 'vocational training centers tailored to industry needs.' Şen concluded by underlining the significance of Türkiye's cooperation with Egypt, calling it 'a leading education hub in the Arab world and Africa.' Egypt's PM orders 60,000 new homes for Alexandria's unsafe buildings
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Tuesday ordered authorities to immediately identify land to build 60,000 new housing units in Alexandria for residents of dilapidated buildings, describing it as a project to save lives. The directive came during a visit to the coastal city to review a portfolio of major development projects, the prime minister's office said in a statement. 'This project is to save the lives of the people of Alexandria living in these dangerous buildings,' Madbouly said, stressing that work should begin immediately. In response, Housing Minister Sherif El-Sherbiny said his ministry would coordinate with the governorate to provide the required land. Alexandria's governor, Ahmed Khaled Hassan Said, noted that a precise inventory of the buildings slated for demolition already exists. During his visit, Madbouly said his government was keen to follow up on the progress of various projects to enhance Alexandria's value as a distinguished economic and tourist destination while preserving its historical character. The prime minister was briefed by the governor on the governorate's development projects. Said stated that 63 projects worth about 90.5 billion Egyptian pounds ($1.89 bn) had been completed, with 31 others currently underway. The roads and transport sector has received a significant portion of the investment, with about 200 km of roads completed and another 117 km currently under construction, including the expansion of the city's famous Corniche road. The briefing also covered progress on the Abu Qir Metro and the development of the Raml Tram. Madbouly also directed officials to immediately begin procedures to convert 200 public buses to run on natural gas as part of a push towards green transport. The governor also outlined the city's preparations for the 2025 summer season, which include upgrading beach search and rescue systems, developing city cleaning and beautification programs, and standardising the appearance of beach facilities. Madbouly reviewed several investment opportunities in the tourism and hotel sector and directed that a follow-up meeting be held to discuss them.

Egypt, EU, and Italy launch €24m integrated rural development project
Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, inaugurated the first technical committee meeting of the Integrated Rural Development Project, joined by European Union Ambassador to Cairo Angelina Eichhorst, Italian Ambassador Michele Quaroni, and Head of Italian Development Cooperation Tibario Chiari. Funded through a €24m grant from the European Union, the project is implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and focuses on improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the governorates of Sohag, Assiut, and Beni Suef. Its scope includes strengthening agricultural extension services, livestock production, plant health, and field irrigation systems. Minister Farouk highlighted the project as a significant step towards sustainable development in Upper Egypt, reflecting the government's commitment to social justice and better living standards in rural areas. He noted that by widening access to economic opportunities and essential services, the project aims to empower local communities and enhance resilience. Farouk described the initiative as a comprehensive development model that combines targeted interventions to bolster agricultural cooperatives and improve the efficiency of agricultural value chains. These measures, he explained, will help increase productivity and incomes, reduce losses, and raise the competitiveness of Egyptian agricultural products both locally and internationally. The minister also emphasised the project's role in creating new opportunities for rural women and youth through dedicated programmes that provide training, technical support, and access to finance—enabling them to become active contributors to economic and social development within their communities. Farouk further praised the initiative as an example of strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union, aligning with Egypt's Vision 2030, which calls for integrated rural development balancing economic, social, and environmental priorities. He affirmed Egypt's openness to expanding cooperation with the EU in areas such as plant and livestock production, export market access, and attracting European investment to the agricultural sector. EU Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst welcomed the collaboration, describing Egypt as a 'key strategic partner for the EU.' She affirmed the EU's readiness to work with Egypt in rural development, agriculture, and technology transfer, while stressing the importance of maximising the impact of the grant through effective implementation. Italian Ambassador Michele Quaroni commended the partnership and the joint efforts to support agricultural development in the project's target governorates. He also invited Minister Farouk and a technical delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture to visit Italy to explore cooperative models as part of Egypt's broader strategy to modernise its agricultural cooperative system.
