Egypt, EU, and Italy launch €24m integrated rural development project

Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, inaugurated the first technical committee meeting of the Integrated Rural Development Project, joined by European Union Ambassador to Cairo Angelina Eichhorst, Italian Ambassador Michele Quaroni, and Head of Italian Development Cooperation Tibario Chiari.
Funded through a €24m grant from the European Union, the project is implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and focuses on improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the governorates of Sohag, Assiut, and Beni Suef. Its scope includes strengthening agricultural extension services, livestock production, plant health, and field irrigation systems.
Minister Farouk highlighted the project as a significant step towards sustainable development in Upper Egypt, reflecting the government's commitment to social justice and better living standards in rural areas. He noted that by widening access to economic opportunities and essential services, the project aims to empower local communities and enhance resilience.
Farouk described the initiative as a comprehensive development model that combines targeted interventions to bolster agricultural cooperatives and improve the efficiency of agricultural value chains. These measures, he explained, will help increase productivity and incomes, reduce losses, and raise the competitiveness of Egyptian agricultural products both locally and internationally.
The minister also emphasised the project's role in creating new opportunities for rural women and youth through dedicated programmes that provide training, technical support, and access to finance—enabling them to become active contributors to economic and social development within their communities.
Farouk further praised the initiative as an example of strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union, aligning with Egypt's Vision 2030, which calls for integrated rural development balancing economic, social, and environmental priorities. He affirmed Egypt's openness to expanding cooperation with the EU in areas such as plant and livestock production, export market access, and attracting European investment to the agricultural sector.
EU Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst welcomed the collaboration, describing Egypt as a 'key strategic partner for the EU.' She affirmed the EU's readiness to work with Egypt in rural development, agriculture, and technology transfer, while stressing the importance of maximising the impact of the grant through effective implementation.
Italian Ambassador Michele Quaroni commended the partnership and the joint efforts to support agricultural development in the project's target governorates. He also invited Minister Farouk and a technical delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture to visit Italy to explore cooperative models as part of Egypt's broader strategy to modernise its agricultural cooperative system.

Britain lifts ban on Pakistani airlines - International

Britain has lifted restrictions on Pakistani airlines, the UK embassy in Islamabad said on Wednesday, ending a five-year ban on the country's beleaguered national carrier. Flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines was barred from flying to Britain in June 2020, a month after one of its aircraft plunged into a Karachi street, killing nearly 100 people. The disaster was attributed to human error by the pilots and air traffic control, and was followed by allegations that nearly a third of the licences for its pilots were fake or dubious. The UK Air Safety Committee had decided to lift the ban following aviation safety improvements in Pakistan, the British High Commission in Islamabad said, adding that decisions on de-listing states and air carriers were made "through an independent aviation safety process". "Based on this independent and technically-driven process, it has decided to remove Pakistan and its air carriers from the (UK Air Safety) List," it said in a statement. The move comes after European regulators lifted a four-year ban on PIA, with the Pakistani state-owned carrier resuming flights to Europe in January. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the lifting of the ban as "an important milestone for the country". "The lifting of the ban on Pakistani flights by the UK is a source of relief for Pakistanis residing in Britain," he added in a statement. PIA said it would resume services to Britain in "the shortest possible time" with the first flights operating from Islamabad to Manchester. Aviation minister Khawaja Asif acknowledged the ban had caused losses. "Confidence is being restored in Pakistani airlines once again," he said at a news conference in Islamabad. PIA, which employs 7,000 people, has long been accused of being bloated and poorly run -- hobbled by unpaid bills, a poor safety record and regulatory issues. Pakistan's government has said it is committed to privatising the debt-ridden airline and has been scrambling to find a buyer. In 2024, a deal fell through after a potential buyer reportedly offered a fraction of the asking price. PIA came into being in 1955 when the government nationalised a loss-making commercial airline, and enjoyed rapid growth until the 1990s. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Egypt FM pushes diplomacy to de-escalate Middle East tensions - Foreign Affairs

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a series of high-level diplomatic calls this week aimed at reducing regional tensions, the Foreign Ministry stated Wednesday. Abdelatty spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi. The discussions focused on advancing peaceful solutions to regional crises, including the need to resume stalled talks over Iran's nuclear programme. Abdelatty stressed that there is no military solution to the ongoing disputes and underscored the importance of de-escalation and diplomacy, particularly between Iran and Israel. The calls come amid renewed uncertainty around nuclear negotiations. On Monday, Iran stated it had 'no specific date' set for a meeting with the US regarding its nuclear programme, following its conflict with Israel that derailed previous talks. 'For now, no specific date, time or location has been determined,' Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said of a possible meeting between Araghchi and Witkoff. On Saturday, Iran said it was reviewing conditions for resuming talks, while insisting on its right to enrich uranium. Tehran began enriching uranium to 60 percent in 2021—well above the 3.67 percent limit set by the 2015 nuclear deal, but below the 90 percent needed for weapons-grade material. On Gaza Abdelatty also discussed Gaza with Witkoff, reiterating Egypt's push for a comprehensive ceasefire and a captive-prisoner exchange to allow for urgent humanitarian aid access to the war-devastated enclave. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government was working toward a 60-day ceasefire in the Strip. Egypt is currently hosting delegations from Egypt, Qatar, and Israel for two days of talks in Cairo, focused on delivering aid and advancing ceasefire efforts. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas resumed last week in Doha, though core disagreements persist. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's rejection of proposals to establish a 'humanitarian city' in southern Gaza or make any demographic changes to the occupied Palestinian territories. He also presented Cairo's proposal to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction, aligned with the Arab-Islamic plan for rebuilding Gaza after a ceasefire is secured. Witkoff praised Egypt's role under President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in promoting regional security and described Egypt as a key US strategic partner. Egypt, alongside Qatar and the US, remains a lead mediator in the war, now in its 21st month. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
