Important date approaches for Jaguars and Brandon Scherff
On that day, Scherff, who is currently set to be a free agent this offseason, will have his contract void. At that point, the Jaguars will have to take on $14 million in dead cap for the 2025 season, according to Over the Cap.
Dead cap are dollars that will remain on the current year's salary cap even if that player is playing elsewhere.
The reason that Scherff has so much dead cap is because of the contract restructure that was completed last offseason and utilized four void years.
Void years are essentially fake years added to a contract for salary cap purposes. Those added years are not a contract extension, but rather they allow teams a longer runway to spread salary cap charges out.
The benefit in the now is that it lowers a player's current cap hit. The downside, however, is that when the contract terminates down the road, all of those cap charges that were pushed to the void years accelerate and come due on the salary cap books.
To avoid this, the Jaguars and Scherff can agree to an extension before February 17th, which would allow the team to then spread those cap charges out over the life of the deal, rather than taking it all on this year.
Once that February 17th date passes, if a new deal hasn't been reached, the Jaguars are still able to re-sign Scherff. However, at that point, in addition to taking on the cap hit from the new deal, that aforementioned dead cap hit of $14 million is still on the books as well.
So if an extension isn't reach soon, then it probably becomes more likely that Scherff won't be returning.
Given that the Jaguars' offensive line play has to improve, there is value in bringing back Scherff and his experience. However, there's also a financial motivation for the Jaguars to bring him back as well.

Former Auburn running back Tank Bigsby looking for a big year three with Jaguars
Former Auburn running back is getting a bulk of the Jaguars carries in practice per reports. Former Auburn running back Tank Bigsby is looking to help lead the Jacksonville Jaguars back to the postseason. Bigsby led the Jaguars in rushing last season with 766 yards and scored seven touchdowns. He made a big leap in his season in the NFL. In his rookie season, he rushed for just 132 yards and two touchdowns despite appearing in 17 games for the Jaguars. Another big leap in 2025 could mean his first 1,000-yard season as a professional. Training camp has begun for all 32 NFL teams, and the former Tigers running back has been a standout for the Jaguars. John Shipley of Jacksonville Jaguars on SI, described it as 'The Tank Bigsby Show." According to Shipley, Bigsby took a bulk of the carries for the team in practice over Travis Etienne. Bigsby and Etienne are both battling it out for the top running back spot. It says a lot that new head coach Liam Coen was giving Bigsby most of the carries. It should be noted that Jacksonville was not in pads during the training camp session. They were just in helmets and shorts. Jacksonville is looking to rebound from another disappointing season. The Jaguars went 4-13 last season and went 9-8 the season before. They have not made the playoffs since the 2022 season. Auburn fans should be excited to see what Bigsby can do this preseason as he attempts to stake his claim as the Jaguars' top running back. He is one of the most talented running backs to play for the Tigers. During his three seasons with Auburn from 2020-22, Bigsby rushed for 2,906 yards and 25 touchdowns. Bigsby is ranked No. 8 all-time at Auburn in yards and tied for eighth in touchdowns with Jarquez Hunter. Has Jaguars top running back option already emerged in training camp?
Has a top running back option for the Jaguars already emerged in the early training camp practices? One of the more intriguing training camp battles taking place for the Jacksonville Jaguars is at the running back position. Specifically, how the playing time amongst those backs will end up shaking out. While we are only three training camp practices into this, perhaps a favorite for that RB1 role has already emerged. Following Friday's practice, John Shipley of Jaguars on SI would write in this training camp recap article that it was the "Tank Bigsby show." Travis Holmes of Big Cat Country would make the same observation in his practice recap, saying that Bigsby took "the majority of the backfield reps." I don't think this comes as a huge surprise to anyone. Bigsby led the team in carries and rushing yards last season. Among all running backs, Bigsby's 4.6 yards per carry ranked 13th, and he was 13th in missed tackles forced, along with being 11th in PFF's breakaway rate, which measures how often a back had a rush of 15 or more yards. With Bigsby's ability to shed tackles and generate explosive runs, a new metric that evaluates running back play--Chris Trapasso's ATEX score--says that Bigsby could be in store for a big season. Looking at how the Tampa Bay offense operated last season under Liam Coen, the top two backs on the Jaguars' depth chart will see their share of opportunities. Success on the ground is a must in this system. For one, it keeps the offense ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations. But in addition to that, the run game and passing game concepts go hand-in-hand in Coen's scheme, building off each other as the game--and even weeks--progress.

Russell Wilson joined Gabe Davis at dinner during New York Giants visit
Throughout free agency and the draft, one of the main focuses for the New York Giants has been ensuring that there are enough skill players for Russell Wilson to throw the ball to this fall. Malik Nabers, Wan'Dale Robinson, and Darius Slayton are the sure starters in 2025, but after that, it gets a little murky. In May, the Giants hosted former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Gabe Davis for a visit. It wasn't a traditional free-agent visit, but more of a "let's see where you're at" visit focused on medical evaluations and system familiarity. Davis appeared on the Up & Adams Show on Thursday, and Davis shared some details on that visit. "It was great, Chad (Hall), Dabes, Shea (Tierney), all those, Joe (Schoen), I mean, it was awesome," Davis said. "Going out to New York and seeing those guys and talking with them. Russ, Russ came to dinner, that was dope, you know, to have Russell Wilson there. That was pretty sick. He's a legend." Davis was drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills. He played there, catching passes from Josh Allen, until his rookie contract expired and he signed a one-year deal with the Jags. Through 72 games over four seasons, Davis has recorded 183 passes for 2,969 yards and 29 touchdowns with four fumbles. He also has postseason experience, which is crucial to the locker room. In seven postseason games, Davis has 22 receptions for 474 yards and six touchdowns with zero fumbles. Davis currently remains a free agent, but as camp continues, that could change.
