Campus Talk: Specialised UG courses in Maharashtra to have mandatory apprenticeship from this academic year

Indian Express29-04-2025
Soon, there will be specialised undergraduate (UG) degree programmes in Maharashtra which will entail a new mandatory component – apprenticeship, to ensure students learn real-world skills while studying. The development comes after the state government last week gave approval for the Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP), scheduled to commence in the 2025-26 academic year, starting June, in non-agricultural universities in the state.
The programme is backed by guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the state's higher and technical education department has issued detailed instructions for universities in Maharashtra.
While affiliated colleges can offer AEDP basis guidelines issued by their university, it will be mandatory for each university to enroll a minimum of 300 students in AEDP. Soon a dedicated online system will be made available for student registration.
As per the Government Resolution (GR), AEDPs will be specially curated courses by universities in their sector of expertise along with relevant industry partners where students can pursue apprenticeships while studying.
'The AEDP will involve a close coordination between university authorities, representatives of industries, skill development departments, business houses, sector skill councils, Board of Apprentice Training, National Apprentice Training Scheme, and other establishments to curate courses aligned with industry needs so that students are ready for jobs once graduated,' stated the GR.
The AEDP aims to foster employment-ready graduates by combining classroom instruction with hands-on training in industry settings, by offering apprenticeships to students with industry partners. Universities will have to work closely with sector-specific industries to create tailored courses. These courses will offer 20-22 credits per semester and will entail components such as major and minor subjects, skill development courses, and on-the-job training, whereas the vertical of Open Electives or General Electives should include multidisciplinary courses.
An official from the state's higher and technical education department said that with less than two months left for the academic year 2025-26 to start, universities are instructed to set up dedicated coordination mechanisms for the effective rollout of AEDP. 'The Board of Deans will be responsible for curriculum development, implementation, and quality monitoring of AEDPs. Additionally, an online system will be established for student registration, progress tracking, and stipend disbursement,' the officer added.

B-school graduates a preferred choice for employers for strategic thinking despite AI boom, claims survey

Artificial Intelligence (AI) might be becoming more integral in a company's decision-making and strategy development but employers still continue to turn to business school graduates for their versatility and strategic thinking, according to a new survey by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Employers continue to turn to business school graduates for their versatility and strategic thinking, despite AI being integral in a company's decision-making and strategy development. (Unsplash) Employers might be reporting ongoing influence of inflation and recession fears on their hiring decisions but recent business school graduates can remain optimistic about their career prospects, buoyed by the accelerating integration of AI across the landscape, the survey has found. Also read: UPSC CAPF ACs 2025 exam timetable released at check schedule here The annual survey of global corporate recruiters by GMAC has found that problem-solving and strategic thinking remain the top skills employers desire today. In addition, new hires' knowledge of using AI tools has risen measurably in its current importance in the average employer's mind since last year, and it tops the list of the skills employers will value the most five years from now. "As AI becomes more integral in a company's decision-making and strategy development, employers continue to turn to business school graduates for their versatility and strategic thinking, along with growing appreciation for their ability to innovate and navigate the challenges and opportunities of technological disruption," says Joy Jones, CEO at GMAC. Also read: JNU to conduct entrance exam for two PhD courses not covered under UGC-NET, check details "I give kudos to business schools' intentional cultivation of these relevant skills in their students, who stand out even more as valuable contributors and future leaders in the ever-evolving business world," Jones added. This year's survey was conducted with a total of 1,108 corporate recruiters and hiring managers — nearly two-thirds of them with Global Fortune 500 companies participating from organisations and staffing firms in 46 countries. According to the survey, an overwhelming 99 per cent of global employers express confidence in business schools' ability to prepare graduates for success within their organisations. Moreover, nearly two-thirds affirmed that the skills gained through a graduate business degree are more critical than ever, as companies increasingly adopt emerging tech. "As flexibility in work and learning becomes a norm, business school graduates with degrees or credentials earned in-person or remotely should feel empowered that their employability continues to outperform those without an advanced management degree, especially when they understand and underscore how they are skilled in strategic thinking, problem-solving, and communications alongside technological savvy," said Christine Murray, Associate Dean at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. For more than two decades, the Corporate Recruiters Survey has provided the world's graduate business schools and employers with data and insights to understand current trends in skill demand, hiring, compensation and perceptions of MBA and business master's graduates. This year's survey was in the field from January to March. "56 per cent of global employers agree or strongly agree that the skills gained through a business degree are more important than before for businesses using remote or hybrid working arrangements and roughly the same percentage also agree or strongly agree that they value graduates of online or predominantly online and in-person programs equally," the survey report said.

MHADA appoints Keystone Realtors to redevelop 25 buildings in GTB Nagar, Mumbai

NEW DELHI: Keystone Realtors has received the letter of acceptance (LOA) for the redevelopment of 25 buildings of Sindhi refugees at Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar (GTB Nagar) in Sion Koliwada, Mumbai , being undertaken in collaboration with Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority ( MHADA ). Spread across a plot area of approximately 11.19 acres (45,308 sq meters), this redevelopment will benefit over 1,400 families, and is expected to unlock a saleable area of approximately 20.7 lakh sq feet, with an estimated gross development value (GDV) of ₹4,521 crore. Boman Irani, chairman and managing director of the company said, "We are honoured to have received the LOA for the redevelopment of GTB Nagar in Sion; a project that carries the hopes of 1,200 society members and 200 slum residents." Constructed in 1958 for post-independence migrants, the buildings were declared unsafe by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in 2020 and were subsequently demolished. Following this, the affected residents had to seek alternative accommodation on their own. The state cabinet, in its meeting held on 14 February 2024, approved the redevelopment proposal through the appointment of a Construction and Development Agency under Regulation 33(9) of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR). A corresponding Government Resolution was issued on 23 February 2024, designating MHADA as the special planning authority for the execution of this project. As per the proposal submitted by MHADA, a minimum floor space index (FSI) of 4.5 will be available including fungible area, ensuring each eligible family receives a free home measuring 635 sq. ft. Additionally, MHADA will receive 25,700 sq meters of built-up space as housing stock. Sanjeev Jaiswal, vice president and CEO, MHADA said that this is the first redevelopment project being executed by MHADA on private land through an appointed construction and development agency. He termed it a historic and model redevelopment initiative. A 5 to 7-member committee comprising society representatives will be constituted to oversee and review project updates. Post-redevelopment, MHADA will provide five years of maintenance charges and monthly rent of ₹20,000 until completion.
