GMRL selects general consultant for Gurugram Metro
Gurugram: The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) on Friday finalised the general consultant for the metro project that will connect the Millennium City Centre metro station with Cyber Hub in a loop of 29km. The bid by Deutsche Bahn Engineering (DBEC) and Hill International, a joint venture, was found suitable for the project and they were also the lowest bidders, a senior GMRL official said. The tender of ₹ 135 crore for hiring a general consultant was floated on May 8, last year and the date was extended to attract companies and firms with experience in executing similar metro projects, said the GMRL official, adding that special permission was taken from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to float the tender as the model code of conduct was in place at that time.
'The negotiations to hire the general consultant were held in Panchkula on Friday and the bidder was finalised. The contract for general consultant will be awarded soon as all formalities have been completed. The joint venture of DBEC and Hill International was found most suitable. The general consultant will oversee the entire project from start to finish and the period of work is four years,' said a senior GMRL official, who was present during the negotiations in Panchkula.
According to the mandate given for general consultant, the firm will guide and supervise the construction and execution of the metro system, and this includes reviewing the DPR, check designs, prepare tender documents, supervise construction, test and commissioning the entire system, prepare manual for disaster management plan, prepare security plan, prepare property development plans, and similar work.
The GMRL official said that the corporation has already hired the detailed design consultant for the project (Systra), which has carried out geo-technical and other surveys and is finalising the alignment and design of the Gurugram metro project.
'The general consultant will be responsible for the construction and supervision and commissioning of the entire metro network. We have also floated the tender for award of civil construction work for the first phase of metro and received eight bids from major firms. The bids for this tender are also being analyzed,' the senior GMRL official said.

As per a GMRL official aware of the matter, the corporation has also decided to seek a share in the (transit oriented development) TOD benefits arising out of the metro project. 'It has been decided that GMRL will reach out to the Haryana government and request for allocation of suitable land parcels along the metro corridor for property development and commercial utilisation to support the long-term sustainability of the project. Earlier in March this year, the metro corporation had held a detailed meeting with real estate developers and consultants to seek their views point regarding commercial development of properties and to understand how transit oriented developed had worked out for existing real estate projects in the city. During the meeting, the metro authorities had sought inputs on how to maximise the alternative revenue sources of Gurugram metro theough property development opportunities at stations, station naming rights, advertising or land based fiscal tools such as land value capture. 'We also wanted to know from the developers regarding the TOD projects in Gurugram by the stakeholders and how they have enhanced project/ property value by catalysing the TOD Zone and enhanced revenue generation,' a senior GMRL official said. GMRL is the special purpose vehicle of the Haryana government which is executing the Gurugram metro extension project form Millennium City Centre metro station to Cyber Hub. The ₹ 5,452 crore metro project will cover a total distance of 28.5 kilometres and have 27 elevated stations.

Tamil Nadu government rejects Coimbatore Corporation's proposal for 20 MW solar plant at Vellalore dump yard
The Tamil Nadu government has rejected a proposal by the Coimbatore Corporation to set up a 20 MW solar power generation unit on 50 acres at the Vellalore dump yard. According to the Corporation, it spends nearly ₹10 crore each month on electricity charges as it has over 50,000 streetlights and several water supply and sewage treatment facilities under its jurisdiction. The Corporation currently operates three solar power plants: a 3.6 MW plant at Pullukadu established under the Smart Cities Mission at ₹17 crore, and two 1 MW plants at Ukkadam and Kavundampalayam, built at a combined cost of ₹5.5 crore. Power generated from these facilities is adjusted against the Corporation's electricity usage. The first phase of biomining at Vellalore, completed in 2023 at ₹60 crore, resulted in the reclamation of 54 acres. The Corporation planned to establish a 20 MW solar power plant on this site and submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the State government last year. Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran told The Hindu that the ₹150 crore project was to be funded through municipal bonds. The proposal, however, did not receive clearance from the State Finance Department. The Commissioner added that the Corporation has submitted a revised proposal under a Union government scheme, with an estimated cost of ₹120 crore. 'This was an effort to put the site to productive use, rather than allowing it to return to being a dumping ground. We have begun planting trees on a 10-acre portion of the dump yard, and we hope the project receives approval,' he said.

BESS units at solar power plants across Karnataka
Bidadi: Karnataka's Energy Minister K J George announced that battery storage systems must be installed in all solar power plants across the state in future. He was speaking at the inauguration of a fully automated 5 GWh Battery Energy Storage unit set up by Pace Digitek's Lineage Power in Bidadi. 'The solar power generated during the day must be stored for use at night. To achieve this, battery storage systems capable of storing at least two hours of solar power must be integrated into all solar power plants,' George said. He emphasised the importance of storage in strengthening renewable energy infrastructure. 'Renewable energy now contributes to 65 percent of Karnataka's total power generation. Although solar and wind energy production has grown significantly, effective storage systems are essential to capture this energy and supply it as needed. Storage ensures grid stability and enables better energy management, especially during periods of demand. The central government is also promoting storage projects to support this effort, and it is encouraging to see private companies actively participating,' he said. Highlighting Karnataka's legacy in the power sector, George added, 'Karnataka has always been a leader in the power generation. The first hydroelectric power project in Asia was established during the reign of Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. We must continue to build on this rich legacy. A new pumped storage project is now being launched at Sharavathi with the approval of the central government. I thank Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy for his support and cooperation.' Detailing the state's storage roadmap, George said, 'Although Karnataka generates more power than its demand, we currently lack adequate storage. To address this, we plan to implement major storage projects, including 2000 MW through the Sharavathi Pumped Storage, 1500 MW at Varahi, 1000 MW at Pavagada, and a 2000 MW battery storage facility at Rapte. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Sharavathi project has already been approved by the Central Electricity Authority. The project will be developed between Talakalale in Shivamogga and the Gerusoppa reservoirs in Uttara Kannada, downstream of Linganamakki.' Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, who inaugurated the battery storage unit, said that battery storage systems are crucial for achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).' The central government is placing high priority on developing storage infrastructure to ensure that solar and wind power can be effectively utilized even during non-generation hours. It is encouraging that Karnataka is leading with projects like Sharavathi and Varahi pumped storage. Battery storage also offers immense investment potential, and I urge entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in this growing sector,' he further added, 'The first revolution in India was electricity, followed by television, and then the Internet and smart phones, which transformed our lives. Now, the next big change will come through battery storage systems, which will redefine how we consume and manage power. We are all set to witness this transformation.'
