Muscat Municipality organises training programme in pest control
This initiative is part of the Municipality's ongoing efforts to build national expertise in vector control and raise public health standards across the Governorate.
Aligned with the latest international standards and best practices, the programme was designed to train the national workforce and field operatives in pest control.
It offered a comprehensive approach, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application.
It focused on pest identification, risk assessment, and the implementation of integrated, sustainable, and environmentally conscious control strategies.
The initiative included a series of scientific lectures and on-site workshops delivered by leading international experts from the WHO.
Skilled professionals across the wilayats of Muscat Governorate participated in these sessions, contributing to a dynamic and engaging training environment.

WHO warns of rising spread of infectious diseases among deported Afghan migrants
Kabul: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a warning regarding the rising spread of infectious diseases among Afghan migrants deported from neighbouring nations amid poor sanitary conditions, Khaama Press reported. The WHO emphasised the need to enhance medical resources and staff capacity to address the increasing health risks. WHO has reported a rise in respiratory infections, skin conditions like scabies, diarrhoea and suspected COVID-19 cases among those deported from neighbouring nations. The ground assessments carried out at key border points, especially Islam Qala in Herat Province, reveal that upper respiratory infections are the most common diseases spread, followed by diarrhoea and dehydration, particularly among children and the elderly. Suspected cases of scabies and COVID-19 have also been reported among deported Afghan migrants. In response to the spread of diseases, the WHO has launched emergency health screenings and mass vaccination campaigns in collaboration with local health authorities at Islam Qala and Spin Boldak border crossings. These initiatives have been launched to stop further outbreaks and provide critical care to vulnerable people. According to the WHO, more than 8,700 children received oral polio vaccines, and over 8,300 individuals received injectable polio vaccines at the Islam Qala crossing. Thousands of deported children have been vaccinated against measles in high-risk border areas, Khaama Press reported. Nearly 29,000 people have been screened or vaccinated at major border points, including Spin Boldak, Torkham, and Islam Qala. WHO mobile health teams have been deployed at reception centres and zero-point borders and are conducting daily health checks on hundreds of returnees. WHO has identified over 840 people showing symptoms of infectious disease, all of whom received immediate medical care. It emphasised the need to increase medical resources and staff capacity to address the growing health risks, according to Khaama Press reported. As the number of Afghan migrants being deported by neighbouring nations continues to increase, the WHO called for expanded funding and coordinated efforts required to prevent large-scale disease outbreaks and provide adequate care for returnees in crisis.

Earthquake of magnitude 4.5 strikes Myanmar
Naypyidaw [Myanmar]: An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 struck Myanmar on Friday, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said. As per the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 101km. In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.5, On: 11/07/2025 05:56:04 IST, Lat: 25.76 N, Long: 95.26 E, Depth: 101 Km, Location: Myanmar." Earlier on July 7, an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter Scale jolted the region. Sharing the details of the earthquake on X, NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.6, On: 07/07/2025 10:40:20 IST, Lat: 24.78 N, Long: 94.85 E, Depth: 85 Km, Location: Myanmar." On July 3, another earthquake of magnitude 4.1 struck Myanmar. As per the NCS, the earthquake happened at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks. In a post on X, the NCS said, " EQ of M: 4.1, On: 03/07/2025 06:10:48 IST, Lat: 22.01 N, Long: 95.58 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar." Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and greater casualties. In the aftermath of the magnitude 7.7 and 6.4 earthquakes that struck central Myanmar on March 28, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned of a series of rapidly rising health threats for tens of thousands of displaced people in earthquake-affected areas: tuberculosis (TB), HIV, vector- and water-borne diseases. Myanmar is vulnerable to hazards from moderate and large magnitude earthquakes, including tsunami hazards along its long coastline. The Sagaing Fault elevates the seismic hazard for Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon, which together represent 46 per cent of the population of Myanmar. Although Yangon is relatively far from the fault trace, it still suffers from significant risk due to its dense population.
