Delft man caught with mandrax tablets worth over R105k due in court
While patrolling the Delft area on Monday, police spotted a man carrying a plastic bag.
They searched the bag and found more than 2,000 mandrax tablets.
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said the suspect was leaving a premises in Voorbrug when he was stopped and searched.
'Driven by pure instinct, they stopped and searched the man and found mandrax tablets inside the bag. They arrested the 39-year-old man and seized 2,108 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R105,400."

Media reports indicate that the property is in 'the prestigious area of Voëlklip, offering a prime position in one of the most exclusive estates on the Whale Coast'. Seeff's website shows a lavish property listed as 'price on application' in 'one of Hermanus's most iconic and private coastal estates'. The Voëlklip property 'boasts uninterrupted panoramic views across the vast ocean expanse of Walker Bay, framed by a majestic mountain backdrop — a setting that defines prestige, privacy, and presence,' the site says. The house itself is 2 082 m², with seven bedrooms and three lounges in addition to 10 garages and other rooms and is situated on what seems to be several plots as the size of the land is 6 940 m². It also has a 'heritage cottage' and a separate 'flatlet'. The cottage itself is 259 m².. Called 'a masterclass in timeless architecture, this grand home offers high ceilings, elegant proportions, and exquisite craftsmanship throughout. According to PropertyTime, the most expensive home ever sold in South Africa was for R290m in 2016. That, IOL's calculations show, would be worth R722m now. In 2024, after a warrant of arrest was issued, Jooste reportedly took his own life at his Hermanus home. He had also been ordered to pay a R475 million fine to the Financial Services Conduct Authority (FSCA) because of being complicit in the publication of misleading financial statements about Steinhoff International Holdings. He was 63 when he apparently killed himself. Jooste, a PwC report revealed earlier this year, earned millions each year, which included strategic bonuses of R20 million for some years and, on some occasions, a bonus when he successfully concludes a deal, which was worth as much as R25 million. However, Jooste didn't legitimately earn rewards for inking agreements as many of the mergers and acquisitions that went through Steinhoff's books before the company spectacularly exploded in 2017 were fictitious, PwC's 7 000-page investigation found. Seven years ago, Jooste sold his plot in Val de Vie in the Paarl area for R13 million after initially putting it on the market for R15 million. Overall, an IOL's interrogation of the PwC report showed that the advisory firm found that €6.5 billion – or R117bn at the current exchange rate – artificially went through Steinhoff's books between 2009 and 2017 when the lid was blown on what is now considered South Africa's biggest corporate scandal. Jooste, the kingpin behind what has become known as the biggest corporate scandal in South Africa, reportedly killed himself on March 21 last year, a day before he was scheduled to hand himself over to law enforcement officers. After blaming others for the demise of the company he had leveraged to mastermind fraud, he metaphorically fell on his sword in December 2017 when he resigned, saying in an email to senior executives: 'Firstly I would like to apologise for all the bad publicity I caused the Steinhoff company the last couple of months.' Jooste's email adds that he made 'some big mistakes' and 'caused financial loss to many innocent people'. He stated: 'It is time for me to move on and take the consequences of my behaviour like a man. Sorry that I have disappointed all of you and I never meant to cause any of you any harm. Murder investigation launched after female motorist killed on R300
A 41-year-old female was shot and killed on the R300 highway when she was changing her tyre. Image: Independent Newspapers Archives A woman was shot in the neck and killed along the R300 on Saturday night in yet another brazen highway hit near the deadly N2 "Hell Run". The 41-year-old woman had reportedly just finished changing her tyre when she was gunned down inside her car. Police found her slumped behind the wheel and she was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, confirmed they are investigating a case of murder. 'The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Saturday evening at about 20:22pm, on the R300, where a 41-year-old female was shot and fatally wounded are under investigation. 'Police members attended the crime scene where they found the victim inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound to her neck. 'The victim was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation.' He added that no personal belongings were taken and that the suspects are still on the loose. Meanwhile, Freedom Front Plus councillor Emre Uygun said the party is shocked that the incident happened so close to the notorious Hell Run. 'This horrific incident also follows closely on the heels of a similar case of attempted murder involving a female motorist that the party had recently highlighted in a press release this week. 'The Freedom Front Plus strongly condemns these brazen and violent attacks on female motorists, which demonstrates a clear disregard for human life.' Image: File The party is demanding that the national, provincial and local government hold an emergency meeting to come up with a proper plan to tackle the growing violence on the N2 and R300. The Cape Argus sister newspaper, Daily Voice previously reported on a couple who were ambushed on the N2 Hell Run while heading to Cape Town International Airport. Uygun added: 'According to reports, Sanral's monitoring system recorded over 200 crime-related incidents on the N2 and R300 in Cape Town in 2023, including stone-throwing and robbery targeting motorists. 'It is alarming that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on this stretch of road are non-functional, and visible policing is clearly inadequate.' The party said Sanral, SAPS and metro police must take action, including fixing broken cameras to catch the suspects and keep motorists safe, especially near the airport. Five wounded following shooting incident in Eerste River
CAPE TOWN - Police in Cape Town are investigating a shooting incident in Eerste River, which left five people wounded. According to reports, the five men aged between 17 and 21 were injured when occupants of a car opened fire on them along Palmiet Street in Electric City on Friday night. A sixth man managed to escape unharmed. Police are now investigating six counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident. Spokesperson Wesley Twigg said the motive for the attack forms part of investigations. "According to reports, a yellow Hyundai i10 drove up to the victims and the occupants opened fire on them. The victims were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment," said Twigg.
