The J&K administration has announced that schools in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch of Jammu division, and Baramulla, Kupwara, Gurez, and those near Srinagar and Awantipora airports in Kashmir division will remain closed on May 9. The Law School Admission Test and J&K State Eligibility Test scheduled on May 11 have also been postponed.
The Srinagar and Jammu airports continued to remain shut and the main highway connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country was shut due to landslides caused by heavy rainfall in Ramban district. Hospitals have started preparations to combat the crisis, if and when it may arise.
Officials said the death toll of civilians has increased to 16 mainly in Poonch district of Jammu where heavy shelling was reported in the intervening night of May 6 and May 7. One Army man was also killed.
"During the night of 7-8 May, 2025, Pakistan army posts resorted to unprovoked fire using small arms and artillery guns across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Akhnoor areas of J&K. The

responded proportionately," said a defence spokesperson here.

In Poonch, locals were either busy with the last rites of those killed or looking after the injured at medical facilities. Many were seen rummaging through the rubble of their homes destroyed in the shelling. Some of the forward areas were emptied following the killing as scores of border residents have been removed to safer locations.
"It was unimaginable and horrific," said a local resident Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Poonch. In northern Kashmir's Uri, locals revisited their homes destroyed in the shelling. "We have been told to go to safer places as some houses were completely destroyed in the Salamabad area," said Farooq Ahmad Sheikh of Uri.
Officials said they would focus on ensuring a swift response to any emerging challenges. The review meeting was held against the backdrop of Pakistan's indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas.

Maya asks govt, oppn to unite on nat'l issues

1 2 Lucknow: On the first day of Parliament's monsoon session on Monday, BSP chief Mayawati expressed hope that it would discuss relevant national and international issues. She said, "The 'bahujans' of the country want both the govt and the opposition to rise above party interests and unite on issues arising out of fast-changing political and economic conditions in the world. " In her post on X, she said, "It is natural for all countrymen to worry that the much-awaited session of Parliament may turn out to be disappointing like the previous sessions, without proper and appropriate debate on important and urgent issues of national and public interest and without any better outcome, without confrontation between the govt and the opposition, allegations and counter-allegations, uproar and without any hope of proper progress towards some 'good days' for crores of poor and other hard-working bahujans of the country. " She said the country is facing public interest problems like massive inflation, poverty and unemployment, women's insecurity and increasing disputes and violent clashes over region and language, along with internal and external or border security. "On the basis of meaningful debate on these matters, the public considers it necessary to have smooth functioning of the Parliament for formulating future long-term policies and strategies, and implementing them, so that the country develops and people prosper, and in which lies the interest of the entire society and bahujans of the country," she said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read More Undo Apart from this, the speed at which the political and economic conditions of the world are changing has also started posing new challenges. It will be better if the govt is positive on discussing India's 'Operation Sindoor' in the case of the Pahalgam massacre, because the security of the people and borders of the country is ultimately the full responsibility of the govt, for which the opposition should also rise above party interests and cooperate with the govt, she said.

Tariff deadline Aug 1, US team to visit India in 2nd half of month

File photo NEW DELHI: Even as the Aug 1 deadline set by Trump looms, a team of US negotiators will visit India only in the second half of Aug with top officials indicating that India is looking at a bilateral trade agreement by Fall. The govt has not commented on the last week's talks in Washington, but by all indications, negotiators have failed to make much headway on the contentious issue of allowing American agriculture and dairy products, which have been clearly marked as no-go areas by India. Besides, India has been demanding that it should get a good deal in areas of interests such as textiles, footwear, certain auto parts and shrimps and is unwilling to settle for sub-optimal solutions. The US has been insisting on concessions for agricultural products such as maize and soybean, most of which is genetically modified, something that India does not allow. In recent days, Trump has claimed that a deal with India will be finalised soon. Although it is unclear if talks for a deal before Aug 1 deadline will take place virtually, it remains to be seen how the American president responds, given that he has been sending tariff letters to countries which have not signed agreements so far. In fact, the transparency in the deals being signed by Trump is another concern with govt, given that the US has finalised deals with Vietnam and Bangladesh, where the non-disclosure clauses are preventing them from being made public while the American president claims victory. On April 2, Trump had announced a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian products, only to suspend it till July 9 and announced Aug 1 as the new date for the higher levies to kick in. For India too, the stakes are high, given that the US is its largest export market. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . India, Pak continue shadow boxing with Notams along borders for air exercises

File photo NEW DELHI: The shadow boxing between India and Pakistan continues after cessation of the May 7-10 cross-border hostilities, with both countries issuing Notams (notice to airmen) to reserve their respective airspaces along the borders for exercises. The South Western Air Command of the IAF is slated to undertake an air combat exercise in the Rajasthan-Gujarat region close to the international border from July 23 to July 25. Pakistan, in turn, has issued a Notam for its central region till July 23 and southern part on July 22-23. Both nations had conducted multiple air force & naval drills in the run-up to the four-day intense hostilities that began after India launched deep precision strikes against four terror hubs in Pakistan and five in POK on May 7 under Operation Sindoor . Though India made it clear that the aim was to hit only terror infrastructure, Pakistan chose to escalate the situation by launching waves of drones and missiles to target Indian airbases, military assets and civilian areas. IAF had then struck at least nine Pakistani airbases & three radar sites, a few of them close to nuclear facilities as well as command & control structures, with Su-30MKI, Rafale & Mirage-2000 fighters using BrahMos, Crystal Maze-2, Rampage and Scalp missiles, among other precision munitions, for calibrated pinpoint strikes, as was reported by TOI.
