Terror accused Yasin Bhatkal appears via video in court
The 2008 Ullal police case had named 13 individuals, including Bhatkal, for allegedly conspiring to carry out bombings and stockpiling explosives in the Mukkacheri and Chembugudde areas of Mangaluru.
The Karnataka police had booked them under multiple sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
While seven of the accused were arrested and tried — with three sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 — six remained untraced.
Bhatkal had been on the run and was later arrested in a different case.
Police say that due to his incarceration in another state, he hadn't been produced in the Ullal case until now. Coordination between Ullal police and Tihar authorities facilitated his video appearance on July 24. The court has set the next hearing for August 20.
Authorities hope that Bhatkal's inclusion in the trial will help bring closure to one of the earliest known Indian Mujahideen plots in Karnataka.
This marks a key step forward in ongoing anti-terror prosecutions involving pan-India networks.

Nagpur: In two separate incidents of burglary reported in the city, valuables worth more than Rs4.7 lakh were stolen from industrial and residential premises, prompting police to launch investigations. A case has been registered against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the IPC at the MIDC police station. In a separate case under the Mankapur police station, 50-year-old Ashish Sawashere of Zingabai Takli reported a burglary that took place while he was away in Raipur with his family between July 22 and July 25. Upon his return, he found the locks of his house's compound gate and main door broken. Intruders had ransacked the bedroom closet and stolen gold and silver ornaments, along with a sports bike from a well-known Japanese brand. The total value of the stolen items was pegged at Rs3.11 lakh. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

Pune: Former state minister Eknath Khadse's son-in-law Pranjal Khewalkar and six others, including two women, were arrested after a Pune police team claimed to have busted a house party early on Sunday in a Kharadi studio flat off Pune-Ahmednagar highway where cocaine, marijuana and hookah pots were used along with liquor consumption. Police later took Khewalkar, who is an MD (medicine) and the husband of Rohini Khadse, who heads the NCP (SP)'s state women's wing, and others to Sassoon General Hospital for medical tests and then to his bungalow in Hadapsar where searches were carried out as part of an investigation to trace the source of the drugs. "A laptop, three pen drives and a hard disk were among the articles seized from the bungalow," a police officer said. The court, while granting two-day custody, said the allegations of illegal arrest can be taken up in subsequent hearings.

Witnesses hostile, man freed in dowry case after 21 years in Noida
Noida: The additional sessions cum fast-track court of GB Nagar has acquitted a man of dowry death charges after 21 years. Judge Saurabh Dwivedi, after hearing both parties, concluded that the prosecution failed to establish charges against the accused. The case concerned the death of a woman who was found hanging at her house in Nov 2004. A complaint under section 304B (killing for dowry) and sections 3/4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 was registered against the deceased's husband, Neeraj Gupta, and his brother Rajiv Gupta, along with his two family members. The CJM court of GB Nagar on Jan 13, 2005, transferred the case to the additional district and sessions court–II for trial on March 4, 2008, following which the trial began on Jan 15, 2008. It was later transferred to the fast-track court on Jan 6, 2015. The prosecution failed to prove the culpability of other family members in the case, as all three family members of the deceased, who were presented as prosecution witnesses, turned hostile. The complainant in the case, Krishna Kumar, who is the woman's uncle, said that he did not name Rajiv in his statement before the police. Admitting to naming Rajiv in his deposition before the court 19 years ago, Kumar said that at that time, the entire family was in shock and grief, and he named him in an emotionally charged state of mind. "They, however, failed to prove that the prosecution witnesses were making false claims," the defence counsel said. The court concluded that since the prosecution failed to prove beyond doubt the involvement of Rajiv Gupta in demanding dowry or attacking the deceased, he deserved to be released from section 304B of the IPC and sections 3/4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
