Hitman jailed for life after attacking elderly couple on son-in-law's orders

Davis was handed two life sentences for a deadly stabbing and two attempted murders carried out at dawn, under orders from the victims' son-in-law.
A Cape Town man has been sentenced to two life terms for killing an elderly man and attacking his wife during morning prayer, in a paid hit ordered by the couple's son-in-law.
The High Court Western Cape Division handed Reagan Davis two life sentences and 15 years for the murder of 75-year-old Hashim Ahmed Dennis and the attempted murder of his 70-year-old wife, Kulsoem Dennis, and their daughter, Ibtisaam Dennis.
The attackers targeted the couple while they were preparing for the sunrise prayer.

Davis, 35, stood trial alongside the elderly couple's son-in-law, Brent Williams. However, Williams died on 10 February 2025, just before the state closed its case. After Williams died, the trial continued against Davis.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said that senior state prosecutor Advocate Evadne Kortje proved that the murder was a contract killing and Davis was paid R1 000, which he used to buy takkies.
Kortje led evidence from 10 witnesses, which revealed that Williams and his wife, Ibtisaam Dennis, stayed with the elderly couple.

Ntabazalila said the couple had two children and marital problems.
'Williams hired Davis and another man, unknown to the state, to invade and attack his in-laws to 'neutralise' his marital problems. At the time, the elderly couple stayed in a flatlet in the couple's yard,' Ntabazalila said.
CCTV footage showed Williams travelling with the two co-perpetrators in his red maroon bakkie to the area of 6 Conifer Close in the early hours of 31 January 2019. The son-in-law dropped Davis and the other man off and drove off to wait until they finished the job.

Davis and the other man gained access to the house through the security gate, which was not forced open.
Devout Muslim worshippers prepare for Fajr, or the sunrise prayer, at approximately four in the morning. Around the world, worshippers offer one of the five daily prayers of the Islamic faith. The taking of Wudu, which is the cleansing ritual required before praying, is the first step in each prayer.
Ntabazalila said that while the elderly husband was busy with the cleansing ritual in the bathroom, his wife was seated on the bed reciting passages from the Holy Quran before they would pray Fajr at 4.30am that day.

The Dennis' normally open the sliding door of their flatlet so that their daughter or grandchildren could join the prayers or come in.
Kulsoem Dennis heard the voice of an intruder asking where the money was in Afrikaans before brutally attacking her. The intruder struck the wife on the head, neck, and chest with a firearm.
'She chanted, 'Allahu-Akbar' (God is Great) until she hit the floor. Severely injured and in shock, she lay on the floor, pretending to be dead as her burga (headscarf) fell softly over her face and she kept her eyes closed,' Ntabazalila said.

According to the NPA, the wife heard shoving noises as the attackers ransacked the room. They assaulted Hashim Ahmed Dennis as he stepped out of the bedroom.
'When it quieted down, she got up and found her husband on the floor, deceased, bleeding from various stab wounds. He had 15 stab wounds,' Ntabazalila said.
The couple's daughter heard a noise and noticed a bright light from her parents' flatlet. When she went to investigate, she was met with a knife-wielding intruder who charged at her.

Ibtisaam Dennis quickly turned around and closed the sliding door to the main house, saving herself and her two children.
CCTV footage showed the two attackers sprinting back to Williams' vehicle, getting in the bakkie and driving away shortly after the attack. The daughter called the police and her sister as she discovered the home invasion and the attack on her parents.
Ntabazalila said that the police investigation identified Williams as the mastermind behind the attacks. Williams was arrested on 20 May 2020.
Mastermind behind attack was the son-in-law
Police arrested Davis on 10 June 2020. He did not provide an alibi to the investigating officer.
In aggravation of the sentence, Advocate Kortje argued that the murder was premeditated, executed with direct intent and excessive force, and committed in the context of a robbery and housebreaking. He described it as a contract killing orchestrated by the son-in-law.
'The attempted murder of Mrs Dennis involved sadistic violence against a vulnerable and elderly woman at peace during a prayer in the bedroom of her home,' Ntabazalila said.

The court sentenced Davis to:
15 years' direct imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to commit murder,
15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances,
Life imprisonment for the attempted murder of the wife,
10 years for the attempted murder of the daughter, and
Life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of the husband.
It ordered the sentences of housebreaking with intent to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder of Ibtisaam Dennis to run concurrently with the two life sentences.
Two life sentences and 15 years
The Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nicolette Bell, praised the investigation and prosecution team's efforts to bring justice to the victims.
'It can never be overemphasised how important human life is, and the NPA will continue being vigorous in its pursuit of these cases to serve as a deterrent to would-be murderers,' Bell assured.

Editorial: It's time to be decisive, Mr President

Cyril Ramaphosa has dithered and delayed acting against ANC ministers implicated in wrongdoing. (Photo: by PresidencyZA) There are many reasons to criticise Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie. Not least among them is his xenophobia regarding immigrants, which has found expression in his party's appalling 'Abahambe' slogan. The larger-than-life former convicted criminal-turned-sports minister is certainly not a measured individual — a critical ingredient in a political leader. But this week he gave a public lesson to Cyril Ramaphosa in decisive leadership, a characteristic our president has shown himself to lack. Within a day of media reports that Kenny Kunene — his close friend and second-in-command in the PA — had been found in the company of a murder suspect when police arrested him on Monday, McKenzie suspended him from party activity for a month so that he could explain their connection. Contrast that with how it took Ramaphosa weeks to fire the higher education minister, Nobuhle Nkabane, when it was apparent from the get-go that she had blatantly lied to parliament about her conduct in the appointment of Sector Education and Training Authorities boards. Ramaphosa was only shaken out of his lethargy and axed her this week because he was looking down the barrel of the Democratic Alliance withdrawing its support in a crucial budget vote in parliament. Ramaphosa also dithered for months to act against then justice minister Thembi Simelane, when she was implicated in the VBS Mutual Bank scandal, only to merely shuffle her to the human settlement portfolio, as if that would miraculously make the serious allegations against her disappear. Granted, McKenzie's move against Kunene was a no-brainer, and applauding him for it is setting the bar embarrassingly low for a leader. But Ramaphosa has constantly fumbled and failed to clear it. In the latest episode of The Indecisive Mr Ramaphosa, he put Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave pending a judicial inquiry into serious allegations that place him at the centre of the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions in the justice system by criminal syndicates. Given the president's previous tepid responses, one can't help but wonder why he did not fire Mchunu if he thought the gravity of the matter warranted suspension. It is, after all, his prerogative to hire and fire cabinet ministers. And we all know how judicial inquiries pan out. After R1 billion was blown and as many reams of paper were used to print copious pages of the Zondo report on state capture, the number of people brought to account after being implicated in serious corruption remains exactly zero — for those counting. On that precedent, it's hard to believe that Mchunu is having sleepless nights as he enjoys his taxpayer-funded break from work.

The trial will take place at the Lusikisiki Magistrate's Court under a special sitting of the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court. This follows the horrific events of 28 September 2024, when 18 people were gunned down at two neighbouring homesteads in Ngobozana Village, near the rural town of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed this week that eight weeks have been set aside for the trial, which is expected to run until 19 September 2025. NPA regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said all six accused will face multiple serious charges. The accused — Mzukisi Ndamase, Siphosoxolo Myekethe, Aphiwe 'AP' Ndende, Bonga Hintsa, Mawethu Nomdlembu, and Songezo Vuma — are facing 18 counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. 'These six individuals have all since abandoned their bail applications and will remain in custody throughout the trial,' said Tyali. IOL News

Lusikisiki Mass Murder Trial Set to Begin Next Week

Staff Reporter | Published 6 hours ago The long-awaited trial of six men accused of one of the most brutal mass killings in recent South African history is finally set to begin on Monday, 28 July 2025. According to the NPA, the accused were allegedly involved in a violent shooting spree that left the Ngobozana community in shock and mourning. The massacre, which happened on a Saturday evening, drew national attention and sparked calls for stronger action against violent crime in rural areas. Adding to the seriousness of the case is the alleged involvement of 46-year-old Mzukisi Ndamase, who is already serving a life sentence for a previous murder conviction. Authorities believe Ndamase orchestrated the Lusikisiki killings from inside the eBongweni Super Maximum Prison in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal. Despite the gravity of the charges, Ndamase has chosen to represent himself in court. 'He has indicated to the court that he will conduct his own defence,' Tyali confirmed. Investigators have also linked the accused to another murder that occurred just weeks before the Lusikisiki massacre. On 19 August 2024, Mncedi Gijana, a local politician from KwaBhaca, was killed. The NPA says there is evidence connecting some of the same suspects to that crime as well. In a related update, the state withdrew charges earlier this year against two other suspects initially arrested in connection with the mass shooting. Lwando Abi and Zenande Paya were released in March after the NPA told the court that there was no longer enough evidence to proceed against them. Abi, who served seven years of a ten-year sentence for attempted murder in 2012, now has no pending cases. With those charges dropped, the focus now shifts fully to the remaining six accused. The case was transferred from Mthatha High Court to the Lusikisiki circuit court, where extra security is expected due to the high-profile nature of the matter and the number of victims involved. Residents of Ngobozana and surrounding areas have expressed relief that the trial is finally going ahead, hoping it will bring justice to the families of those who were killed. Community leaders have also called for counselling and support services to be made available for survivors and relatives of the victims.
