Rakhimova knocks Paolini out in Wimbledon second round
The ever-smiling Paolini's sunshine tennis lit up the All England Club during her run to the title clash last year but the 29-year-old cut a grim figure in the final set of her clash with Rakhimova on a shadowy Court Three.
Paolini, who was similarly dragged the distance in her opening victory over Anastasija Sevastova, was unable to muster the fight needed to quell the challenge of the unseeded Rakhimova and let her opponent build a 4-2 lead in the decider.
Rakhimova, enjoying her best run at the grasscourt Grand Slam, edged closer to victory when Paolini sent a shot long at the baseline in the final game and the 23-year-old wrapped up her first top-10 win on her fourth match point.
Paolini's exit means only one of the top five women's seeds - world number one Aryna Sabalenka - will be in the third round. It is only the second time that this has happened in the professional era after Wimbledon 2018. REUTERS

MADRID — Liverpool forward Diogo Jota died in a car crash near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, Spanish state-owned TV station said on Thursday (July 3), citing local firefighters. Police told Reuters everything pointed to that information being correct, although they could not yet officially confirm the names. The regional fire department of Castille-Leon, where Zamora is located, said on its website a car crashed shortly after midnight on July 3 and burst into flames, with two men, aged 28 and 26, found dead. Spanish daily Marca reported that the two men were Jota and his 26-year-old brother Andre, also a professional footballer. Jota had just married long-time partner Rute Cardoso barely two weeks ago. In a joint Instagram post, they posted many pictures of their big day, with the caption "June 22, 2025. Yes to forever". It received over 200,000 likes and over 1,000 comments. Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 in a €44.7 million (S$67.1 million) deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and went on to rack up 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds.
