Liverpool's Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, 28, dies in car crash in Spain, TVE reports, World News
Police told Reuters everything pointed to that information being correct, although they could not yet officially confirm the names.
The regional fire department of Castille-Leon, where Zamora is located, said on its website a car crashed shortly after midnight on July 3 and burst into flames, with two men, aged 28 and 26, found dead.
Spanish daily Marca reported that the two men were Jota and his 26-year-old brother Andre, also a professional footballer.
Jota had just married long-time partner Rute Cardoso barely two weeks ago. In a joint Instagram post, they posted many pictures of their big day, with the caption "June 22, 2025. Yes to forever". It received over 200,000 likes and over 1,000 comments.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 in a €44.7 million (S$67.1 million) deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and went on to rack up 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds. He was part of their teams who won the FA Cup (2022), League Cup (2022) and Premier League (2025).
He also made 49 appearances for Portugal, twice winning the Nations League.

A convoy of hearses left for Gondomar near Porto on Thursday evening from the morgue of Puebla de Sanabria, near where the Lamborghini the brothers were travelling in had veered off the road and burst into flames after midnight early on Thursday. Police said they suspected a tyre had burst. Jota's wife Rute Cardoso, who had married the footballer just weeks earlier, was seen leaving the morgue and joining the convoy, as was Jota's longtime agent Jorge Mendes. A wake is expected to take place at a chapel in Gondomar from 4:00 p.m. (1500 GMT) and a funeral on Saturday at a church nearby at 10:00 a.m. local time, Gondomar's mayor's office said. Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro arrived in the village on Friday morning. The death of Jota at the age of 28 has jolted the world of football, with messages of homage pouring in from former teammates, clubs, national leaders and fans. Outside Liverpool's Anfield stadium fans left flowers, scarves and hand-written notes, many from children. Spurs hire Ho as women's coach to turn things around after disappointing season

The 35-year-old, whose contract runs until 2028, was born in Liverpool and returns to England from SK Brann in Norway, where he had an impressive two years. The team became the first Norwegian side to reach the group stage of the Women's Champions League after winning all four of their qualifying matches. They were eliminated by eventual champions Barcelona in the quarter-finals. Ho was an assistant coach at Manchester United's women's team for four seasons before heading to Norway.
