NEW DELHI: Experience counts — especially when a seasoned player knows how to control the tempo in high-pressure situations. On the final day of the second Test at Edgbaston, with India chasing a historic win, one such subtle but crucial moment played out during the morning session.
India were looking to break the partnership between
Ben Stokes
and Jamie Smith when
Ravindra Jadeja
was handed the ball for the final over before lunch. He had a brief discussion with captain Shubman Gill, and then cleverly bowled his six deliveries in under 100 seconds, not allowing Smith any time to settle at the crease. The rapid over meant that India had time for one more before the lunch break.

Seemingly as per plan, Gill tossed the ball to
Washington Sundar
for the bonus over — a calculated gamble that paid off immediately.
On the final delivery before lunch, Sundar removed England captain Ben Stokes, dealing a massive blow to the hosts. Stokes' dismissal left England reeling at 153/6, with India needing just four more wickets to seal their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston.
After the wicket, Jadeja was seen high-fiving an ecstatic Gill — a moment that summed up the planning and execution behind the dismissal.

Play started after a 1 hour 40-minute delay, leaving India with 80 overs to bowl out England, who began the day at 72 for 3, chasing an improbable 608.
Prasidh Krishna opened the bowling with Akash Deep, who stood out in the morning session. For the first time in the high-scoring Test, the pitch showed signs of wear, and Akash Deep extracted sharp seam movement off the surface. Surprisingly, Mohammed Siraj did not share the new ball with him.
Akash Deep struck in his second over, cleaning up Ollie Pope as the batter chopped on. In his very next over, he sent down a vicious nip-backer that hit a crack and trapped Harry Brook lbw — a near-unplayable delivery that left England rattled.
With that spell, Akash Deep likely sealed his place for the Lord's Test, showcasing masterful control with the new ball. Krishna didn't take a wicket but played a valuable holding role from the other end.
India Dominate Day 4! Siraj & Akash Deep Rattle England
Jadeja was brought into the attack after the first hour and immediately started troubling the batters with turn from the rough. Unlike Headingley, Jadeja reduced his pace and extracted more spin — a smart tactical tweak. Both Stokes and Smith were tested, but the England captain managed to score some vital runs, hitting four boundaries off Siraj, including a classy pull and an extra cover drive.
Realising the futility of defending endlessly, Stokes resorted to sweeping Jadeja.
However, just as England seemed to be building a stand, Sundar's final over before lunch turned the momentum firmly back in India's favour.
Heading into Day 5, only two results were on the cards: an India win or a rain-assisted draw. England, who have drawn just one Test in the last three years, seemed to have abandoned any hopes of chasing the massive target.
Now, with only four wickets standing and momentum on India's side, a historic Edgbaston victory — and a series-levelling result — is within touching distance.

Where's My Favourite Journalist..., Shubman Gills Witty Dig Steals The Show After Edgbaston Win, Video Goes Viral

In a resounding statement of belief, brilliance, and bounce-back, Shubman Gill led India to their first-ever Test victory at Edgbaston on Sunday, July 7, crushing England by 336 runs in the second Test to level the five-match series 1-1. It was not just a victory for the record books — it was a win loaded with symbolism, grit, and a touch of wit from India's new skipper. Before the match, all eyes were on India's dismal record in Birmingham — nine Tests, zero wins over 56 years. But by the end of Day 4, the only number that mattered was 336, India's colossal margin of victory, powered by Gill's captain's knock, standout bowling spells, and a firm dismissal of ghosts from the past. #ENGvIND #ShubmanGill #PressConference — Ankan Kar (@AnkanKar) July 6, 2025 Gill's Double Delight and a Dash of Humour Having copped a pre-match question about India's winless run at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill didn't just answer with his bat — he saved the best response for the press room. 'I can't see my favourite journalist. Where is he?' Gill quipped, flashing a grin that matched his confidence. 'I said before the Test that I don't really believe in history or stats… I believe we're the best Indian team to have come to England.' It wasn't just talk. Gill walked the walk — scoring 269 and 161 in a performance that redefined leadership from the front. This was his maiden Test win as captain, and he turned it into a personal statement — one that combined steel with a smile. India's Batting Masterclass: Over 1,000 Runs in Two Innings India's batting unit responded to the Leeds heartbreak — where despite four centurions they couldn't secure a win — with renewed purpose. Powered by Gill's twin tons, India amassed over 1,000 runs across two innings. Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant chipped in with vital contributions, building partnerships that ground England into submission. The turnaround was emphatic — from scoring 800+ runs in Leeds and losing, to breaching the 1,000-run mark and sealing a dominant win. Akash Deep, Siraj Shine in Bumrah's Absence If the pre-match chatter was about Jasprit Bumrah's absence, it was post-match applause for Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj. The duo delivered one of the finest Indian fast-bowling performances in England. Siraj sparked the collapse with a six-wicket haul in the first innings. Akash Deep followed it up with a 10-wicket match haul — only the second Indian pacer to do so in England. Their spells dismantled England for 353 and 271, with Akash Deep's six-for in the fourth innings closing the curtains on a record 608-run chase. Gill praised his bowlers with clarity: 'Any bowling unit of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere. This was an example of that.' Leadership with Intent: Gill Leads by Example Criticized after Leeds for India's inability to convert centuries into match-winning scores, Gill knew he had to walk the talk. His Edgbaston effort wasn't just about numbers — it was about timing, temperament, and tactical nous. 'When you're the captain, you need to lead by example,' Gill reflected. 'Put the team first, and the right things follow.' It's precisely what India did. Lord's Awaits: Momentum on India's Side With the third Test at Lord's starting July 10, India march in with momentum, belief, and a newly-minted captain in top form. Bumrah is expected to return, bolstering an already confident squad. This win wasn't just about ending a drought at Edgbaston. It was about India rewriting narratives, challenging old patterns, and doing it with a captain who balances aggression with humour, hunger with humility. And yes, he hasn't forgotten that journalist.

(Pic credit: BCCI) NEW DELHI: India's commanding 336-run victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston not only levelled the five-match series 1-1 but also triggered praise from former cricketers Dinesh Karthik and Michael Atherton, who hailed the performance as both "satisfying" and "massive" in context. One of the heroes of the match was 28-year-old pacer Akash Deep, who delivered career-best match figures of 10/187, including a superb 6/99 in the second innings, stepping up magnificently in the absence of rested ace Jasprit Bumrah. Playing just his eighth Test, Akash Deep helped dismiss England for 271 on Day Five as they attempted to chase an improbable 608. Poll What was the most impressive aspect of India's victory over England at Edgbaston? Akash Deep's bowling performance Shubman Gill's batting records Team's overall strategy Resilience after Headingley defeat Reflecting on India's historic first-ever Test win at Edgbaston, Dinesh Karthik said on Sky Sports, "That's quite the performance. Look, we speak a lot about white-ball cricket, but you ask any cricketer who's played the longer format - the satisfaction that you get when you fight for five days and end with a win, there's not many better feelings in this sport." 'Any attack of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere': Shubman Gill hails Mohd Siraj, Akash Deep after historic Edgbaston win India captain Shubman Gill added his own chapter to the record books, becoming the first player in Test history to score 250 and 150 in the same match, with innings of 269 and 161. 'Doing it without Jasprit Bumrah is a huge psychological statement,' Atherton said. 'I think it's disappointing that England couldn't bat out a day's worth of cricket on a good pitch. India were fantastic, but England should have made a better fist of it.' England's Jamie Smith (88) was the lone second-innings resistance, following his unbeaten 184 in the first. But with better fielding, relentless pace, and inspired leadership, India dominated every aspect of the Test. India's historic win at Edgbaston: Gill hails Akash Deep's spell as turning point

Birmingham [UK], July 7 (ANI): India's captain Shubman Gill lauded Akash Deep's performance after they thrashed England by 336 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, levelling the five-match series 1-1 and securing a historic first-ever Test win at the iconic venue. At the post-match press conference, Gill pointed to Akash Deep's fiery spell on Day 4, as he dismissed England batters Ben Duckett and Joe Root. 'Yesterday, I think, getting through the top order is never easy,' Gill said. 'The spell of Akash Deep, how he got those two wickets, kind of gave the confidence to everyone that we can win this Test match and when he came in this morning with the ball hitting the cracks, yes, the ball was seaming, the odd ball seaming, that's what really instilled the confidence in all of the players that, yes, we can do it,' he added. Akash Deep returned with phenomenal match figures of 10/187 (4/88 and 6/99), breaking Chetan Sharma's long-standing record (10/188) of the best bowling figures by an Indian in a Test match in England. Another tactical masterstroke that paid dividends for India was the selection of Washington Sundar over Kuldeep Yadav, a move that raised eyebrows before the match. Gill addressed the decision, highlighting the need for batting depth and control in spinning conditions. 'It is very tempting when you have a bowler like Kuldeep. One of the reasons why I wanted to play Washington was because he gives us batting depth,' said Gill. 'In the first innings, I think the partnership between me and Washington, if it wasn't for that partnership, then our lead would have been 70-80-90 runs, which is psychologically very different from 180,' he noted. Washington Sundar contributed a vital 42 runs in the first innings and later dismissed Ben Stokes in the second innings, underlining his all-round value. Gill elaborated on the team's strategy behind selecting a finger spinner. 'Even on the 5th day, the ball was not moving that much from the middle, it was just moving through the roughness. We thought that maybe if our first batting comes, then maybe on a 5th day wicket, the finger spinner will give us more control if the ball is moving from the wicket and especially on such wickets, sometimes more than fast bowling, the spin gives you more control,' Gill explained. Looking ahead to the third Test at Lord's, the Indian captain remained open to reassessing the bowling combination. 'So that was our mindset, but now we will see what kind of wicket they are giving at Lord's,' he added. (ANI)
