Americans' becoming more aware of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy: Survey
The number of U.S. adults that are aware of GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, has jumped significantly in the last few years, a new survey shows. The YouGov poll, released Friday, shows that at least 80 percent of respondents have heard at least 'a little bit' about semaglutide, a medication used to treat Type 2 diabetes that also helps a user to shed weight. In March 2023, only 60 percent of Americans were aware of the drug. A year later, in March 2024, that number had jumped to 70 percent, the pollster noted. The latest survey also shows that the share of those who have heard 'a lot' about the medication has nearly doubled since 2023, increasing to 41 percent from 23 percent. Just 36 percent of respondents say they know someone who has taken semaglutide. Around 14 percent listed a family member took the medicine, 16 percent named a friend, 11 percent identified an acquaintance and 7 percent said they had taken it themselves, according to the poll. Several also noted they knew a user in more than one category. Women are more likely than men, 43 percent to 29 percent, to know someone — including themselves — who has taken a GLP-1 agonist drug, per the survey. The weight loss medications — including Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and others — have been available since 2005 but have only in the past few years been used to treat obesity. The drugs work by mimicking a hormone in the body — glucagon-like peptide-1 — that stimulates insulin secretion and reduces appetite. Possible side effects of taking the medication include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. While semaglutide is currently only prescribed for weight loss or treating diabetes, early research is pointing to possible benefits for a host of other issues, including treatment for addiction, neurodegenerative diseases and conditions that affect the heart, kidney or liver. The latest survey found that roughly a quarter of respondents said they would be 'very' or 'somewhat' interested in taking the medication as a weight loss treatment. About a third of Americans have either taken the drug or said they would be interested in trying it. On the other side, about 17 percent said they were 'not very' interested in the medication and 45 percent signaled they were not at all interested. A separate poll from last September found that around a quarter of adults in the U.S. would consider using weight loss medications without consulting their doctor. The YouGov analysis is based on an online survey conducted from May 22-25 among 1,109 adults in the U.S. The margin of error for the full sample is 4 percentage points.

Saquon Barkley among NFL stars who will join President Trump's council on Sports Nutrition
Eagles running back Saquon Barkley will join Harrison Butker, Nick Bosa, Tony Romo, and Lawrence Taylor on President Trumps Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.' Saquon Barkley is a son, a fantastic father, the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year winner, and now a member of President Donald Trump's administration. In a move that will revive a standard from the Reagan, Clinton, and Bush era, Barkley will join Harrison Butker, Nick Bosa, Tony Romo, and Lawrence Taylor on President Trump's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.' According to the Washington Post, President Trump on Thursday announced that the presidential fitness test, a hallmark of American physical education programs, will be making a comeback in public schools. The assessment was retired and replaced by a fitness program under the Obama administration. The presidential fitness test was initiated in the 1950s by a council established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower that was directed to improve the physical fitness of American youths, in response to fears they were falling behind their European counterparts when it came to athleticism. The project is an alternative way to get anti-obesity drugs to Medicare and Medicaid patients, after the administration said in April that neither program would cover GLP-1s for weight loss. In doing so, it scrapped a 2024 Biden administration proposal for the programs to start covering GLP-1s for patients with obesity. Several high-profile athletes — all of whom have existing ties to Trump — attended the ceremony and will serve on the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition. The attendees included professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau, who will chair the council; controversial National Football League kicker Harrison Butker; World Wrestling Entertainment mainstay Paul 'Triple H' Levesque; golfer Annika Sorenstam; and football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor. The Eagles running back wasn't in attendance, but will be joined by golfers Jack Nicklaus, Nelly Korda, and Gary Player (who was also awarded the Medal of Freedom alongside Sorenstam); Tony Romo, Nick Bosa, and Barkley; legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky; and baseball player Mariano Rivera. The list also includes NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, whom Trump repeatedly scrutinized during his first presidential term. Barkley was criticized during the off-season for spending time with President Trump on a golf outing prior to the Eagles' ring celebration.

Cramer's week ahead: Earnings from Palantir, Berkshire Hathaway, Disney and McDonald's
CNBC's Jim Cramer walked investors through another week of earnings season, honing in on reports from Palantir, Berkshire Hathaway, Disney and Eli Lilly. "We're still in earnings Hades, but at least it's getting a little cooler out there," he said. "That's right, we've now gotten over the hump of the big-time growth stocks, the hyperscalers, but there's plenty left." On Saturday, Cramer will be paying attention to earnings from Berkshire Hathaway, and he suggested things might be a little different with Greg Abel at the helm. If the report is good, Cramer said he bets the stock goes higher. Monday, Cramer is watching Palantir's report. He has called the company, which just landed a $10 billion Army contract, "the most controversial stock in the entire market." He said the data outfit has excited many on Wall Street. And he predicted the quarter will be "a total blowout," as it seems business is strong. Tuesday brings quarterly results from DuPont De Nemours, Caterpillar, Pfizer and Marriott. Cramer said it's important to see that DuPont's breakup is on track, because the parts are worth more than the whole for the chemical company. He suggested Caterpillar will post strong results as the equipment manufacturer rides the tailwinds of domestic infrastructure and reshoring. To Cramer, it's necessary that Pfizer sees some "really dramatic" results from clinical trials because the pharmaceutical giant's shareholder base is "getting very restive." Marriott is usually reliable, he continued, but said the hotel chain's stock tends to come down after earnings even if the results are good. Disney and McDonald's are set to report on Wednesday. Shares of the media titan have been climbing nicely, Cramer said, and he praised the streaming, theme park and cruise line business segments. He also said McDonald's is a buy at current levels, suggesting the company has improved as of late with new offerings for customers. Dutch Bros and E.l.f Beauty, two young "renegade" companies that have shaken up business in their respective sectors, will also report Wednesday, Cramer said. He added that he thinks they both have room to grow and take share. Thursday brings earnings from Eli Lilly. Cramer pointed out that its main competitor in the GLP-1 drug arena, Novo Nordisk, just posted a disappointing quarter. He wondered whether Novo Nordisk's results indicate that Eli Lilly has been taking share or if both companies are seeing a peak in their popular weight loss medication. He said both dynamics could be true. Warner Bros Discovery, MP Materials, Wynn Resorts and Pinterest are also set to report on Thursday. Cramer said he's waiting to hear how Warner Bros is reorganizing the company and paying down debt. He said he wants to learn about rare earth mineral miner MP Materials' deal with the U.S. government. He also said he's feeling positive about Wynn Resorts. Pinterest is likely to post a solid report, he continued, and said it's the most family-friendly advertising platform compared to its peers. Wendy's will post earnings on Friday, and Cramer said the previous quarter was weak. He suggested the sector is so competitive that there are no guarantees the burger chain will share good results.
