Zayn Rayyan's mother denies neglect charges in court testimony

The Sun7 days ago
PETALING JAYA: The mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, Ismanira Abdul Manaf, denied charges of neglecting her autistic son during her defence proceedings at the Sessions Court today.
The 30-year-old testified that she had followed her usual routine on the day her son went missing, Dec 5, 2023.
Ismanira recounted picking Zayn up from school five minutes late after stopping at a supermarket to buy ingredients for his favourite meal, spaghetti bolognese.
She then took him to the playground near their home at Block C of Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai, as part of their daily routine.
'Halfway up the stairs, I realised I didn't hear the sound of his shoes. I thought he might have gone ahead, but when I reached home, he wasn't there,' she said.
She left both the grille and front doors open, hoping he would return.
Desperate, she called out for him, using both his name and the affectionate term 'abang' (elder brother).
'I shouted 'abang... Zayn... where are you?' but there was no reply,' she told the court.
When questioned about the police investigation, Ismanira said officers suspected criminal involvement due to injuries found on Zayn's body after his discovery near a stream on Dec 6, 2023.
Authorities speculated the perpetrator could be a pedophile or drug addict.
Ismanira faces charges under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' jail, a RM50,000 fine, or both.
Her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, was acquitted of similar charges earlier.
The trial continues tomorrow. – Bernama

Police Close In On Mob Killing After Lewd Act At Jasin Supermart, Seven Arrested

ALOR GAJAH, July 28 (Bernama) -- A joblessman was confirmed dead after he was allegedly beaten by a furious mob, following a lewd act he committed in the parking lot of a supermarket in Jasin yesterday, said Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar. He said in the incident at about 9 pm, the 51-year-old victim died at the scene due to severe bodily injuries. He has two previous records under Section 377D of the Penal Code for committing gross indecency in a public place in 2003 and 2024. "Based on early investigations, the victim is said to have committed an act of gross indecency at 7.26 pm before he was chased and assaulted by several individuals. "The victim tried to escape for about 200 metres, including a desperate leap into the river, before being caught by the public and beaten again," he said after officiating at the Melaka Schools Sports Council Athletics Championships at the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) in Durian Tunggal here today. He said seven men aged between 20s to 50s, including a Pakistani national, were remanded for seven days starting today to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. In a separate case, Dzulkhairi said a motorcyclist in his 30s was remanded for three days from today for beating a man in his 20s in a fight near Bulatan Kancil in the Stadthuys compound at Banda Hilir yesterday. He said the incident allegedly occurred when the suspect and 17 of his biker friends were fined by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) enforcement officers for violating the Vehicle Free Zone (ZBK) in the area with their vehicles. He said the MBMB enforcement officers had asked the group of motorcyclists to leave, but they were ignored before they were issued summonses for ignoring council orders. "The group led by the suspect then tore up the summonses and a confrontation broke out between them and another group of bikers.

Man held over viral video of turtle mishandling in Cherating

KUANTAN: A 51-year-old man has been detained in connection with a viral video showing three people handling an adult turtle that was attempting to lay eggs on a beach near the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary yesterday. The suspect, who tested positive for drugs, was picked up at his home nearby at about 1pm today. Authorities are still tracking down his two accomplices. Acting Kuantan police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the Pahang Fisheries Department lodged a report at about 10am today after several video clips went viral showing three men disturbing a sea turtle that had come ashore to lay eggs. "Visitors at the beach recorded the men carrying the turtle at around 7am. The men were seen moving the turtle towards a hole they had dug earlier. "Investigations revealed that the men had carried the turtle and dug the hole in an attempt to expedite the egg-laying process. "However, after realising they were being closely watched by a group of visitors, they decided to release the turtle back into the sea," he said in a statement today. Adli said the suspects are believed to have been attempting to collect the turtle eggs for illegal sale or personal use. He said police were able to arrest one of the suspects based on the viral footage and are working closely with the Fisheries Department to locate the remaining two men. Adli said that under Section 27 of the Fisheries Act 1985, it is an offence to fish, disturb, harass, catch, or take any aquatic mammal or turtle, and offenders may be fined up to RM5,000. In the video, three men can be seen trying to carry a turtle that had emerged from the sea before one of them suddenly slips and falls on the sand. A visitor present at the beach is heard telling the men to let the animal go.

Three Terengganu officers remanded over RM25k bribery for building approvals

KUALA TERENGGANU: Three local authority officers in Terengganu have been remanded for six days over allegations of accepting bribes totalling RM25,000 to facilitate building plan approvals. The remand order, issued by Magistrate Yuhanis Mohd Roslan, follows an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The suspects, two men and one woman aged between 40 and 50, were detained yesterday afternoon after giving statements at the Terengganu MACC office. A source revealed that the alleged offences occurred between 2015 and 2019, with bribes transferred into their personal bank accounts. 'Initial investigations found that the three suspects allegedly committed the offences between 2015 and 2019. They are believed to have received bribes amounting to about RM25,000 through separate fund transfers into their respective personal bank accounts,' the source said. The bribes were linked to 14 projects. The arrests follow a separate case in January involving a government agency director detained over a RM900,000 bribery scandal. Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the latest arrests, stating the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
