CM Shri Schools Get Priority In Delhi Government's Rs 900 Crore Education Overhaul

NDTV08-07-2025
The Delhi Cabinet, in its 10th meeting, approved an ambitious Rs 900 crore package aimed at upgrading school infrastructure, implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and accelerating the rollout of smart classrooms across CM Shri Schools.
At a press briefing following the meeting, Education Minister Ashish Sood announced that the initiative will begin with the installation of 2,446 smart blackboards across 75 CM Shri Schools. Over the next few years, this plan will scale up to a total of 21,412 smart classrooms by 2029-30, covering Classes 9 to 12 across the capital.
"Between 2014 and 2024, only 799 classrooms had smart blackboards - and those were donated through CSR. Today, we're moving from 799 to over 21,000. This isn't a token reform. This is a complete shift," said Mr Sood.
The minister informed that the funds will be used not just for classroom upgrades, but also to ensure teacher training, strengthen digital pedagogy, and effectively implement NEP 2020's learner-centric approach.
According to the minister, this digital expansion will happen in 5 phases and the tender for the first phase is already in advanced stages.
Minister takes dig at AAP, says focus beyond Central Delhi:
Taking a swipe at the previous Aam Aadmi Party government, Mr Sood claimed that the so-called "education revolution" of the past was largely limited to select schools in Central Delhi.
"We're taking education where it matters - to Najafgarh, Narela, Seemapuri, Mahavir Enclave, and Kirari. The transformation will be seen across the city, not just in Lutyens' Delhi," he said.

Mosque meeting row: Unlike BJP, SP stands with all, says Akhilesh

1 2 Lucknow: Hitting out at the BJP for trying to whip up a controversy over his meeting inside a mosque near the Parliament House, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said he and his party stand with every faith that unites. "Since BJP is against uniting people, it will oppose our move," he said. The BJP had attacked the SP accusing party chief Akhilesh Yadav of holding "a political meeting" inside a mosque near Parliament complex and took on Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav for her attire after photographs of their visit to the mosque surfaced on Wednesday. The SP functionaries had visited the mosque on the invite of party's Rampur MP Mohibbullah Nadvi who had earlier served as Imam of the mosque before he contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election. They claimed that no political meeting was held inside the mosque. "Faith unites people. We are with the faith that unites everyone. SP respects all religions. The problem with the BJP is that they cannot stand anything that talks of uniting people. They want people to remain divided. BJP is a congregation of people full of negativity. BJP indulges in discrimination and politics of hate," Akhilesh said. He said BJP's reaction on the issue only cemented the SP's charge that the party was against the PDA. "BJP govt has reversed all that the SP govt did for the weaver community and Pasmanda Muslims. If the BJP govt has any concern for the Pasmanda Muslims, they should immediately restore free electricity to weavers which was provided to them under the SP govt," he said. SP functionaries described the row as an attempt by the BJP to shift people's focus from the opposition's uproar against anomalies in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. "The way the govt officials in Bihar have been making a mockery of the revision of electoral rolls on social media, has left the BJP nervous. Now they want to divert everyone's attention," said an SP functionary in Lucknow. Rebutting allegations of BJP that SP MPs held a political meeting at the mosque, Prof Sudhir Panwar posted photographs in which top BJP brass, including the PM visited mosques in India. "Every time the BJP realises that people have started asking questions about poor governance, it resorts to politics of hate. When people started asking about Rs 15 lakh in bank accounts and 2 crore jobs annually, the BJP raised the 'Mandir Masjid issue'. Now people are asking about SIR, BJP is talking about faith. People will not fall in BJP's trap anymore," he said.

12 trapped in Dhanbad mine after cave-in, say locals, MP

Incident site in Dhanbad DHANBAD/RANCHI: At least 12 miners are feared trapped in a caved-in illegal coal mine in Jamunia, around 40 km from Dhanbad district headquarters, with some feared dead, villagers and politicians said Wednesday. Police, administration and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, however, said that so far they had not found any sign of mine collapse. The alleged incident snowballed into political brick-batting as both the governing and opposition parties attacked each other over the illegal mining menace in the coal belt, and in the state at large. "Twelve labourers are trapped while some others who managed to escape are undergoing treatment in private hospitals. Families of the trapped workers are being offered Rs 10 lakh as compensation. This is a racket where labourers are brought from other districts and used for illegal mining. After the mishap, the entry point was filled with mud to conceal the incident," Giridih MP Chandra Prakash Chaudhary claimed. On the other hand, Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy on Tuesday wrote on X, "At a place called Jamunia in Baghmara, Dhanbad, a tunnel used for illegal mining collapsed, resulting in the death of nine workers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cat Keeps Hugging Friend Before Going To The Vet – The Vet Paled When He Saw Them Tips and Tricks Undo The illegal mining mafia is engaged in disposing of the bodies of the deceased. I have informed #SSP#Dhanbad about this." Talking to media, he held the local administration accountable. Dhanbad deputy commissioner Aditya Ranjan told PTI, "We have rushed an NDRF team to the spot suggested but so far no sign of any such incident has been found." Dhanbad SSP Prabhat Kumar said that he had directed SDPO Baghmara to conduct a probe. Kumar, too, told PTI that "no trace of any such incident was found". He added: "Additionally, no one from any side, including family members, turned up. So far, no formal complaint has been lodged from any side." Regional nodal security officer of Bharat Coking's block-2 project, Rajiv Ranjan, also said there was no information of any such incident in the block-2 project's closed underground mine. Health, food & civil supplies and disaster management minister and Congress MLA Irfan Ansari, meanwhile, accused Bharat Coking of patronising illegal mining and demanded appropriate compensation. The state Congress attacked the Centre. "Security of mines is entirely managed by institutions like CCL and BCCL through CISF, which is directly under the Centre," said spokesperson Sonal Shanti. BJP hit back demanding a CBI probe. "It's state-sponsored deaths. The state govt and local administration are aware of illegal mining but choose to remain mum," said spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo.

"Fraud And Justice Can't Dwell Together": Top Court Recalls Compensation Order

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday recalled its order on compensation awarded over a land in Gautam Budh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh acquired by the Noida authority, saying it was obtained by fraud and has to be erased from the records, being a nullity. A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Ujal Bhuyan and Dipankar Datta adjudicated the dispute over the ownership of land, which was purchased by three people - Reddy Veerana, Vishnu Vardhan and one T Sudhakar - in 1997, and acquired by Noida in 2005 and now forms part of Noida's commercial hub in Sector 18. It was alleged that Mr Veerana fraudulently claimed sole ownership of the land in several proceedings before diverse judicial fora, from civil courts to the high court and to the Supreme Court in 2022, when the top court had passed an order for enhanced compensation to Mr Veerana. Mr Veerana was alleged to have fraudulently ousted Mr Vardhan and Mr Sudhakar and pocketed the compensation amount. Vishnu Vardhan contested the claim of Mr Veerana by initiating several proceedings and sought a recall of the May 2022 order of the court. Justice Datta, who penned the verdict for the bench, said from the multiple decisions of this court on "fraud, what follows is that fraud and justice cannot dwell together". "The legislature never intends to guard fraud, the question of limitation to exercise power does not arise, if fraud is proved, and even finality of litigation cannot be pressed into service to absurd limits when a fraud is unravelled." The order added, "However, even if Vishnu had not applied for a review - as a logical corollary of the aforesaid discussions - the decision in Reddy Veerana (2022 verdict), too, having been obtained by Reddy by playing fraud, has to be erased from the records being a nullity." The bench also set aside the Allahabad High Court's October 28, 2021, verdict, which accepted Veerana as the sole owner of the property and enhanced the compensation from Rs 152.04 per sq. metre to Rs 1,10,000 per sq. metre, saying the fraud had vitiated the entire proceedings. "As a logical corollary of the impugned order being set aside, it would follow that the decision of this Court in Reddy Veerana (2022 verdict), upholding the same, which too was obtained by playing fraud, will also be a nullity, and thus stand recalled in exercise of our inherent powers," the bench ordered. Referring to a 1994 verdict of the top court, the bench said that fraud was held to be an act of deliberate deception with the design of securing something by "taking unfair advantage of another: a deception to gain by another's loss". "We begin with recording the realisation that undoubtedly, there seems to be much more than what has met our eyes. However, like all courts, we are bound to decide cases based on the evidence on record, judicially noticeable facts, and the applicable law. Despite Reddy and Vishnu – and to a certain extent Sudhakar – having used the judicial process obviously to secure their personal interests, we cannot be bystanders," it said. The verdict continued, "If things have happened with a telling effect on public interest, resulting in public funds from the public exchequer being drained, the same has to be dealt with within the bounds of our jurisdiction. In our pursuit for the truth and to uphold the rule of law, we must adhere to established principles unless a valid reason warrants deviation.' The top court remanded the case back to the high court with a direction to implead Vishnu Vardhan and T Sudhakar, the other two owners of the land, as additional respondents.
