Deepak Tijori reveals why Sooraj Barjatya chose Salman Khan over him for Maine Pyar Kiya: 'You performed really well, but...'

Time of India2 days ago
Deepak Tijori revealed he was a strong contender for the lead in 'Maine Pyar Kiya' before Salman Khan. Despite initially being told he had the role, Sooraj Barjatya ultimately chose Salman after family feedback favored his romantic appeal. Tijori accepted the decision gracefully, understanding the director's perspective and the film's needs.
Before
Salman Khan
became the quintessential romantic hero with Maine Pyar Kiya, another name was in serious contention for the iconic role —
Deepak Tijori
. In a recent interview, the actor revisited this lesser-known chapter of his career, revealing how close he came to landing the part and why director
Sooraj Barjatya
ultimately chose Salman instead.
The decision, as Tijori recalls, was made with sensitivity and logic — and one he respected despite the initial disappointment.
In conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Deepak revealed that while he was one of the final contenders for the role after multiple auditions, the part ultimately went to someone else. He was initially told that he had been selected, but later called in and informed otherwise. However, Deepak took the decision in stride, admitting he found the reason behind it fair and didn't feel disheartened.
Having faced many struggles in life, he said he had grown used to unexpected outcomes and accepted the situation practically.
The actor further shared that Sooraj Barjatya had explained the decision to him with warmth and honesty. After reviewing the final auditions with their families, the feedback leaned heavily in Salman Khan's favor — especially from the women, who were drawn to his charm and looks, which suited the romantic nature of the film. Although Deepak delivered a strong performance, Sooraj felt Salman was a better fit for the love story.
Deepak admitted that while the rejection did sting, he respected the decision and appreciated the way it was conveyed. He accepted it gracefully and moved on without resentment.

Salman Khan's acting process is ‘hawa ka jhoka' compared to Aamir Khan's, says Paresh Rawal: ‘Kab aaya, udaa ke le gaya…'

Paresh Rawal has worked in the film industry for over 40 years. In his illustrious career, he's shared screen space with generations of actors, including two actors who debuted soon after him and became formidable leading stars in the 1990s. Rawal worked with both — Aamir Khan and Salman Khan — together in Rajkumar Santoshi's 1994 cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna. Rawal described the acting process of both as polar opposite to each other. 'Aamir has to work around and know things in depth and detail. That is why Aamir sahab thoda time lete hai (that is why Aamir takes more time while shooting). Meanwhile, Salman is hawa ka jhoka, kab aaya, udake ke le gaya, pata bhi nahi chalta (Salman is like a breeze, you don't even realise when he arrives and sweeps everything away with him),' Rawal said. In the interview with Bollywood Bubble, Paresh Rawal explained further, 'Salman understands a scene on a gut level. He is such a charming fellow. On screen, he is magic. When he comes on set, he doesn't have to work too hard. He just flows with it.' Rawal has collaborated with Salman in Sohail Khan's 1997 action thriller Auzaar, David Dhawan's 2000 romantic comedy Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Raj Kanwar's 2000 rom-com Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Anees Bazmee's 2011 action comedy Ready, and most recently, Ali Abbas Zafar's 2017 spy thriller Tiger Zinda Hai. Meanwhile, Paresh Rawal and Aamir Khan have shared screen space in SA Kader's 1992 action romance Daulat Ki Jung, Ashutosh Gowariker's 1995 action thriller Baazi, and Mansoor Khan's 1995 romantic drama Akele Hum Akele Tum. Rawal has previously compared the working styles of Aamir and Salman, when he claimed he finds Aamir to be a better actor than Salman and Shah Rukh Khan. 'Personally, I like Aamir better, if I talk about work. He doesn't believe in any gestures or mannerisms. But Salman is full of it, he is a natural. He has another level of charm and charisma,' said Rawal to The Lallantop, adding, 'Acting mein koi bada, superior, inferior, ghatiya, great nahi hai (No one is bigger, superior, inferior, pathetic, and great in acting). Everyone is different and good in their own place.' Also Read — Paresh Rawal confirms his return to Hera Pheri 3: 'We had to fine-tune ourselves…' 'With Aamir, his way of working is methodical. Salman toh hasste khelte aayega aur karlega (Salman will come and pull it off like it's a child's play), Aamir has to know everything. So, kabhi kabhi lagta tha ki thoda toh kahin par manufacture kia hua lagta hai (So it felt sometimes that his performance is a little manufactured). But when you see his final impact, it's amazing,' Rawal had said in interview WTH Radio Nasha.

Paresh Rawal Says Aamir Khan Is Detailed, Salman Khan Is 'Hawa Ka Jhoka': 'Pata Nahi Chalta…'

Paresh Rawal compares Salman Khan's instinctive charm to Aamir Khan's detailed process, says both actors have very different ways of working on set. Paresh Rawal, who has acted alongside nearly every major star in Bollywood, recently shared his perspective on the very different ways Aamir Khan and Salman Khan work on set. In a recent interview, the veteran actor opened up about what it's really like to share screen with both superstars. Chatting with Bollywood Bubble, Paresh praised Salman for his ease and natural presence in front of the camera. 'Salman understands a scene on a gut level. He is such a charming fellow. On screen, he is magic. When he comes on set, he doesn't have to work too hard. He just flows with it." He then explained how Aamir's approach is more calculated and deeply involved, often requiring more time to get into character. 'Aamir has to work around and know things in depth and detail. That is why Aamir sahab thoda time lete hai. Meanwhile, Salman is hawa ka jhoka, kab aaya, udake ke le gaya, pata bhi nahi chalta." Paresh, who's been part of several films with both stars, noted that each actor's method works for them, even if their processes are entirely opposite. As of now, Paresh Rawal is keeping busy with a string of new projects. He'll be seen next in Nikita Roy, a thriller also starring Sonakshi Sinha, set to hit theatres on 18 July. Earlier this year, fans were disappointed when Paresh Rawal revealed he wouldn't be reprising his iconic role as Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, citing personal reasons and creative disagreements. Following his exit, Akshay Kumar reportedly issued a legal notice, concerned about delays in the production schedule. However, it has now been resolved. During a recent podcast with Himanshu Mehta, Paresh confirmed his return, saying, 'The film was going to happen anyway; we just needed a bit of fine-tuning. After all, everyone involved, Priyadarshan, Akshay, Suniel, we've been friends for so many years. It was just a matter of realigning." Directed by Priyadarshan, the film is expected to start shooting in early 2026. He's also part of Welcome To The Jungle, an action-comedy headlined by Akshay Kumar, which is expected to resume production in mid-2025. Another upcoming film on Paresh's plate is Bhooth Bangla, a horror comedy that reunites him with Akshay and Tabu, directed by Priyadarshan.
