Money from 20mph fines 'should be used to fix potholes'
North Wales Live readers have been actively expressing their opinions following a recent discussion by the North Wales Police and Crime Panel on the default 20mph speed limit.
The chairwoman of the police panel has urged councillors to petition their local authorities for the installation of additional fixed speeding cameras to apprehend those flouting the 20mph limit. During their June meeting at Conwy's Coed Pella headquarters, the North Wales Police and Crime Panel learnt about instances where drivers were clocked at speeds of 51mph, 61mph, and even 83mph in areas with a 20mph restriction.
Supt Simon Barrasford delivered a briefing on road policing to the panel, providing updates on speeding incidents since the implementation of the 20mph standard speed limit in Wales.
The panel was informed of the difficulties police encounter in enforcing the new limit, particularly with many motorists and holidaymakers entering from England, where the traditional 30mph limit remains.
However, the revelation that all "top five fixed camera locations" are situated in Flintshire led Supt Barrasford to advise that councillors could request additional cameras for their districts, potentially supported by funding from the Welsh Government.

Abide by the law and you won't pay a penny - the vast majority of the population are quite capable of doing this."
Forestdragon believes: "The councils are in no hurry to reinstate 30 on the through-routes, though, are they? How long do we have to wait for that? Several of the most productive roads named are likely to be reversed, for example the A5104 Pontybodkin to Coed Talon, and the A5119 Flint, Northop Road. Surely it's unethical to continue to enforce 20 on these roads simply because they are dragging their feet with the restoration?"

I got a £100 fine and 3 points and I have no idea where the 30 in a 20 zone happened (exactly 30 mph!), don't remember seeing a sign. I'm no loss to Wales really, but I CBA risking more points just to spend my cash there!"

One year of numbers were used to show serious injuries down by 19.4% and slight injuries down by 43.9%. And, at the same time they discounted 'fatalities had increased on these roads by 200%'. You cannot pick and chose just to win the argument. Once we have five years of figures we will be able to see the clear trends. A more important figure is the number of disqualified and uninsured drivers on our roads that are repeat offenders and which rarely go to jail."

The latter charge refers to alleged contamination of food with bodily fluids. His arrest triggered a public health alert, with Victoria's Chief Health Officer warning that 1,200 children should get STI testing. 'I'm just heading to work. I take my baby with me. I have from the beginning. So far, it's worked out. But it won't always and it doesn't work out for everyone,' Madeleine began in a video posted to Instagram. 'But I just had a brain wave. I qualify for the child care subsidy. So, why don't we cut out the middle man here? How about the government gives me the money instead of subsidising daycare?' 'And I stay home with my kids.' Madeleine widened her eyes and made a shocked sigh to emphasise her point as she bounced her newborn on her chest. 'I know it sounds simplistic but the simple fact is, if there is no access, there is no abuse.' From January 2026, Australian parents will have access to three days of guaranteed subsidised childcare after Labour brought the new laws forward ahead of the federal election. The 'three-day guarantee', first introduced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in December, will remove the current activity test and guarantee subsidies for families earning up to $530,000 per year. Tributes to Blood Bike 'hero' who died in A478 crash in Pembrokeshire
The man, in his 70s, has been hailed a 'hero' after he lost his life when his red Honda Blood Bikes motorcycle was in a collision with a van while he was delivering urgent NHS supplies. One tribute read: "So sad, a great man doing voluntary work for such a good cause." Another commented: "Rest in peace blood angel", while another posted: "Died while helping others" and another simply wrote:"RIP hero!". Blood Bikes Wales is one of 36 UK volunteer-run blood bike groups that provide a vital, free service to the NHS by transporting blood, organs, medication and other medical supplies. Following the crash on the A478 between Glandy Cross and Blaenffos at 6.25pm on Wednesday evening, July 2, Dyfed-Powys Police have issued an appeal for dashcam footage or information from anyone who was travelling along the route at that time. Anyone with information can contact police on 101@ or by phoning 101. The rider, who died at the scene, has not yet been named by police. His family are being supported by specialist officers. 'It's a stark reminder that volunteers put their lives on the line daily to perform this vital service for the NHS,' Merseyside & Cheshire Blood Bikes posted on Facebook. The group was one of many organisations and individuals sending condolences to the man's loved ones and Blood Bikes Blood Bikes 'family'. 'Thank you for your service,' the Merseyside group added. Bloodrun Energency Voluntary Service, Blood Bikes North East, sent their condolences 'at an incredibly difficult time' and added: "This tragic news is a stark reminder of the risks that blood bike & blood car volunteers across the UK take every day." Midland Freewheelers Blood Bikes said they were 'deeply saddened' to hear of the loss of the Welsh rider. They added: "Thank you for your service. On behalf of us all, we send our heartfelt condolences to your family, friends and Blood Bike family. Rest easy'. Dyfed-Powys Police said following the crash: 'One man, aged 56, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody. "The road was closed overnight while specialist collision investigators carried out their enquiries. It re-opened at 6.45am on Thursday July 3."

Cooper orders ‘crackdown' on suspected illegal working for delivery apps
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has ordered a nationwide immigration 'enforcement crackdown' which the Government says will target illegal working in the gig economy. Officers will carry out checks in hotspots across the country where they suspect asylum seekers are working as delivery riders without permission. It comes after Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat said they would ramp up facial verification and fraud checks over the coming months after conversations with ministers. Last week the shadow home secretary, Chris Philp, claimed in a post on X to have found evidence of people working illegally for the food delivery firms during a visit to a hotel used to house asylum seekers. On Saturday, the Home Office said anyone caught 'flagrantly abusing the system in this way' will face having state support discontinued, whether entitlement to accommodation or payments. 'Strategic, intel-driven activity will bring together officers across the UK and place an increased focus on migrants suspected of working illegally whilst in taxpayer-funded accommodation or receiving financial support,' the Home Office said. 'The law is clear that asylum seekers are only entitled to this support if they would otherwise be destitute.' Businesses who illegally employ people will also face fines of up to £60,000 per worker, director disqualifications and potential prison sentences of up to five years. Asylum seekers in the UK are normally barred from work while their claim is being processed, though permission can be applied for after a year of waiting. It comes as the Government struggles with its pledge to 'smash the gangs' of people-smugglers facilitating small boat crossings in the English Channel, which have reached record levels this year. Some 20,600 people have made the journey so far in 2025, up 52% on the same period in 2024. Ms Cooper said: 'Illegal working undermines honest business and undercuts local wages, the British public will not stand for it and neither will this Government. 'Often those travelling to the UK illegally are sold a lie by the people-smuggling gangs that they will be able to live and work freely in this country, when in reality they end up facing squalid living conditions, minimal pay and inhumane working hours. 'We are surging enforcement action against this pull factor, on top of returning 30,000 people with no right to be here and tightening the law through our Plan for Change.' Home Office director of enforcement, compliance and crime, Eddy Montgomery, said: 'This next step of co-ordinated activity will target those who seek to work illegally in the gig economy and exploit their status in the UK. 'That means if you are found to be working with no legal right to do so, we will use the full force of powers available to us to disrupt and stop this abuse. There will be no place to hide.' Deliveroo has said the firm takes a 'zero tolerance approach' to abuse on the platform and that despite measures put in place over the last year, 'criminals continue to seek new ways to abuse the system'. An Uber Eats spokesperson has said they will continue to invest in tools to detect illegal work and remove fraudulent accounts, while Just Eat says it is committed to strengthening safeguards 'in response to these complex and evolving challenges.' Responding to the announcement, Mr Philp said: 'It shouldn't take a visit to an asylum hotel by me as shadow home secretary to shame the Government into action.' He added: 'The Government should investigate if there is wrongdoing by the delivery platforms and if there is a case to answer, they should be prosecuted. 'This is a very serious issue because illegal working is a pull factor for illegal immigration into the UK – people smugglers actually advertise it.'
