Harry Kane Scores Twice, Bayern Munich Tops Flamengo to Advance in Club World Cup

Fox Sports21 hours ago

Harry Kane scored twice and Bayern Munich capitalized on a quick start to beat Flamengo, 4-2, in the Club World Cup round of 16 on Sunday.
Germany's premier soccer club regrouped quickly from its only loss of the tournament last week against Benfica, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and then holding off Flamengo's comeback attempt to advance to the quarterfinals.
Bayern Munich will face Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in Atlanta.
Kane's first goal was a deflected strike nine minutes in that made it 2-0, and the prolific goalcorer found the back of the net again on a feed from teammate Joshua Kimmich that he whipped past goalie Agustin Rossi.
The Bundesliga champion struck early when Flamengo star Erick Pulgar headed the ball into his own net off Kimmich's corner six minutes into the match.
Flamengo answered when Gerson fired a strike past Manuel Neuer in the 32nd to cut the deficit to a goal before Leon Goretzka made it 3-1 at the half.
Flamengo pulled within a goal again in the second half when Jorginho scored on a penalty. Then came Kane again, finishing in the 73rd with his third goal of the tournament.
The 65,000-seat Hard Rock Stadium — home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins — has been one of the more well-attended venues of the tournament and was almost completely full Sunday, with many attendees wearing Flamengo's iconic black and red kit. Key moment
Jorginho sent Neuer the wrong way on a penalty in the 54th to cut the deficit to 3-2 and give Flamengo life. Takeaways
Bayern's win ensured that at least four European clubs will advance to the quarterfinals. It also set up a rematch of the 2020 UEFA Champions League final, as they'll face Paris SG in the quarterfinal after the European Champion routed Lionel Messi and Inter Miami earlier Sunday in Atlanta, 4-0.

Phillies' Bryce Harper Reinstated After Injured List Stint With Sore Wrist

Phillies slugger Bryce Harper was reinstated Monday ahead of Philadelphia's opener against San Diego after a stint on the injured list with right wrist inflammation. Harper went on the 10-day injured list on June 6. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time MLB All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He also missed five games, from May 26 to June 2, with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Spencer Strider. Harper said when he went on the IL that he felt pain in the wrist during a large portion of last season, when he hit 30 homers while helping the Phillies win the NL East. The Phillies entered Monday's game in first place in the division. They are 13-14 overall this season without Harper in the lineup. To make room on the 26-man roster, infielder Buddy Kennedy was designated for assignment. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Astros SS Jeremy Peña Has Rib Fracture and Is Headed to 10-Day Injured List

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña has a fractured rib and will be placed on the 10-day injured list. The team revealed the extent of the injury Monday, saying it was a small fracture in Peña's left rib cage. The IL move will be retroactive to Saturday. Peña was hit in the ribs by a pitch from Chicago Cubs rookie right-hander Cade Horton in the second inning of the Astros' 7-4 victory on Friday. He didn't leave the game until the fifth, and the team said X-rays taken that night didn't reveal the fracture. An MRI and CT scan on Sunday revealed the fracture, according to the team. The 27-year-old Peña is having a breakout season, ranking fourth in the major leagues with a .322 batting average. He hit .361 in June. Peña will be with the team on a six-game road trip that starts Tuesday in Colorado, according to the Astros. A corresponding roster move will be made Tuesday, the team said. Angler reels in record-breaking fish in Connecticut. ‘Is it a baby Hippo?'

An award-winning angler set a state record in Connecticut by reeling in a massive fish, one of his favorite species to catch. Norbert Samok hooked a Common Carp at Lake Zoar on June 21, nearly three weeks after another angler broke Connecticut's record for the species, according to Connecticut Fish and Wildlife. The huge fish weighed over 58 pounds and measured more than 44 inches in length — 13 pounds heavier than the carp caught by the previous record holder, Rafal Wlazo, on June 1, the state agency said in a June 25 news release. Wlazo was also at Lake Zoar, which is a reservoir along Housatonic River, when Samok landed his catch, Connecticut Fish and Wildlife wrote on Facebook. He took videos and snapped photos of Samok, including one shared by the agency that shows Samok holding up his fish. 'Holy CARP (or is it a baby Hippo?)!,' wildlife officials captioned the post. Samok, of New York State, is a member of the USA Carp Squad, according to the U.S. Angling Confederation Having grown up in Hungary, his 'European (background) spurns him on to target carp as a main fishing pleasure,' reads his bio on USAngling's website. He regularly competes in U.S. carp fishing competitions and has won multiple trophies, according to USAngling. The record Samok set with the carp from Lake Zoar could prove tough to beat, Connecticut Fish and Wildlife wrote in its post. When Wlazo set the previous state record for common carp on June 1, his catch weighed more than 45 pounds, the agency said. Wlazo is the founder of carp fishing gear store Carp Angler in New York. He congratulated Samok for beating his record, according to Connecticut Fish and Wildlife, saying 'from one champ to another!' Lake Zoar is about a 15-mile drive northwest from New Haven.
