Millions of phone owners with OLD mobiles urged to change four settings that are ‘slowing' it down and killing battery
PHONE owners have been urged to turn off four key settings that are slowing performance and killing battery.
Just a few simple tricks could beef up your phone's performance and improve battery life.

Android devices have been promised regular updates from Google and Samsung so are expected to perform just fine as they get older.
However these few easy tricks could help keep them operating at the top of their game.
Instead of taking a trip to the phone shop to buy a newer model phone owners have been urged to save cash and try these tricks first.
To help save on battery life users are encouraged to turn off the 'adaptive' brightness or 'auto brightness' settings.
Once done, setting your brightness to 50% could help lower the amount of battery your phone uses and make it last longer.
'Auto' and 'adaptive' brightness settings can be found easily by searching 'brightness' in the settings app.
Users have also been encouraged to turn on an 'adaptive' setting to save battery.
The 'adaptive battery' setting and 'battery optimisation' setting can both help with battery life.
These two features learn how you use your phone and then optimise the devices battery usage based on that.
Some Android phones have dedicated settings for battery usage, users are encouraged to check these.
Settings can even monitor charging speed and help preserve battery health.
If your device is left charging all night it can harm battery health, settings that monitor charging can help prevent this.
A key setting for improving performance is 'dark mode' which lowers the brightness of apps while they are in use.
The four settings that can improve your OLD phone's performance
Dark mode - Any Android phone running Android 10 or newer will have a dedicated dark mode option.
Do not disturb - Android offers a Do Not Disturb mode that will keep the phone silent during designated hours
Adaptive battery - These features learn how you use your phone, including which apps you use and when, and then optimise the apps
Adaptive brightness - The brighter your screen, the more battery power it uses.
Dark mode can also help protect users eyes from bright screens, Android devices boast a dedicated dark mode that works across all apps.
Phones that use Android 10 or newer will have a dedicated dark mode setting.
If your device doesn't have its own dedicated dark mode most apps have one in their settings.
Dark mode can be turned on and off and also scheduled to come on and off at specific times, having it on all the time is recommended to improve battery health.
Another tip users are recommended to follow is keeping home screens free of unnecessary apps.
Removing icons for apps from the home screen frees up space.
Long-pressing an empty area of the home screen and turning off the 'add icon to home screen' setting will stop newly downloaded apps from being added.
Users can also move apps off the home screen themselves by pressing and dragging the icon.
3
Keeping your phone as up to date as possible is one of the best ways to improve performance and battery health.
Users can ensure their phone is up to date by checking in settings.
If an update is available it can be found by searching for 'update' in the settings menu.
Users have also been urged to turn on their 'do not disturb' setting which reduces the amount of noise and notifications coming through your phone at given times.
Turning it on at night will stop your device from buzzing and beeping and keeping you awake.
Notifications will still appear in the morning once do not disturb is turned off.
The setting can be found in 'sounds' or 'notifications' in your device's settings menu.
Using Android's security features is also strongly recommended.
These features can track your phone and lock unwanted users out in the event it gets stolen or lost.
Both the 'find my device' setting and the locking settings can be found in the settings menu under 'biometrics and security.'
WHY DO BATTERIES GET WORSE OVER TIME?
Here's what you need to know
Most gadgets run on lithium-ion batteries
Over time, the amount of charge this type of battery can hold gets smaller
That means you need to charge your device more often because they hold less charge
Batteries have two electrode points – the cathode and the anode
To charge a battery, the ions inside the battery are forced from the cathode to the anode
When you use a battery, it moves in the reverse direction
This process wears away at the structure of the anode, reducing its ability to function correctly
But the process also builds up a kind of salt on the cathode when charging
As this build-up grows, the battery will accept less charge over time
It's estimated that between 500 and 1,000 full charge-cycles will reduce a battery's maximum capacity by roughly 20%

Major mobile brand is shutting down after 15 years – last chance for users to update before permanent closure in DAYS
A HUGE mobile major brand is bowing out after 15 years. It's the last chance for existing users to update their phones - though they may want to consider buying a new handset entirely before sinister hacks start to emerge. 1 LG has been a staple in the mobile scene for 15 yearsh Credit: Getty LG was once the world's third-bestselling mobile brand. But the firm announced in 2021 that its mobile division was closing down due to poor sales. The South Korean tech giant has continued to offer important software updates for its most recent handsets. But those are coming to an end on Monday, putting the final nail in the coffin of LG's mobile business. LG's last phone release was the LG Wing 5G, which features a unique design with two displays - one of which swivels. After June 30, Android software updates for LG phones will no longer be available. This means hackers could be on the lookout for vulnerabilities to exploit - and with no further updates to fix them. If you want to continue using your LG smartphone, it's at least best to get the last update while you still can. "We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude towards our customers who have loved and supported LG Electronics mobile products," LG said. "After the termination date, you will no longer be able to use the software upgrade services. Urgent warning to delete 2 dangerous apps that STEAL all photos & blackmail you "If you wish to use the services, we strongly recommend upgrading your software before June 30, 2025. "Furthermore, as we will no longer provide application updates, you will not be able to download default applications deleted upon initialization." The move also marks the end for the LG Bridge software for PCs which allowed mobile users to update too.

Review: Meet the game controller with a focus on floral patterns and funky lights
We live in a world where tech doesn't just have to be brilliant, it also needs to look good. Game controllers are just one of the things that need to look good as well as do the job for the gamer. GameSir is a specialist in controllers for PC, Android, Xbox and Switch devices and has released a wide array of products in this marketplace. Its latest is the T7 Pro Floral Wired Controller for the Xbox which has a very obvious standout pattern that makes it really eye-catching. I'll be honest on two fronts, flowery games controllers and a wired device would not normally be my go-to choice, but there is a lot to like here. Let's look at the visuals first, the design is funky and coats the front with a subtle light blue, turquoise design that actually really does look very smart. The semi-transparent casing of the controller looks superb with the RGB lighting included providing a stunning effect. In short, it looks absolutely brilliant, it's a crafted piece of kit that is designed to impress. GameSir know what it is doing with these controllers too and this is packed with the best tech you need for a solid gaming experience. With Hall Effect Trigger systems giving the smoothest of experiences, gameplay is highly responsive and rewarding. Vibration comes from rumble motors in the grips and triggers. The Nexus app is the place to go for customising buttons and changing the responsiveness. It adds to the mix and gives control for gamers to enjoy the controller to suit their needs. As I say, I'm not a fan of wired controllers, mainly because I'm used to wireless devices these days, but after a while I didn't mind. It's a really good responsive experience. I like the GameSir range and have had a good experience with its controllers, and the fact that this also looks so sharp is a bonus. What users say Jennifer Young: "The GameSir T7 Pro Floral takes the original and adds 2 back buttons and some 2-step trigger stops, and on the whole, it does feel a lot better quality build than the T7. The Floral design gave me the impression it would be a little flimsier, but it's a sturdy piece of kit." Scott Webster: "The most obvious update here is aesthetic: a floral-patterned matte shell paired with a semi-transparent finish and dynamic RGB lighting. It's the kind of controller that looks just as at home in a curated setup as it does in the heat of battle. But underneath that glow is a full-featured wired controller built for responsive, accurate play." Alternatives
