Where is the British Grand Prix taking place?
Silverstone hosted the first F1 world championship race in 1950, just three years after the track was first laid out using a decommissioned World War II airfield. It remains hugely important to the sport, with most F1 teams based nearby in an area nicknamed 'motorsport valley'. Last year's British Grand Prix attracted a track-record race-day crowd of 164,000 to see Lewis Hamilton take an emotional victory in his home race. Attendance over the entire week was 480,000, organizers said.
What happened in last Sunday's race?
Lando Norris was challenged throughout the Austrian Grand Prix by teammate Oscar Piastri but still held on to take the win, with Charles Leclerc third for Ferrari. It was a tough home race for Red Bull as Max Verstappen retired on the opening lap after a collision with Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes. Piastri leads Norris by 15 points in the standings and Verstappen is 46 further back in third.

'It was close at some points, probably pushing the limits a bit much from my side once or twice but we're fighting for race wins in Formula 1. It's going to be pretty tough and work pretty hard.' — Oscar Piastri looks back on his battle with Norris in Austria.

Max Verstappen starts on pole for Formula 1's British Grand Prix, with title rivals behind

SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Max Verstappen has pole position for the British Grand Prix but the reigning Formula 1 champion will have title rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris close behind in Sunday's race. Red Bull's Verstappen had struggled in practice but found extra pace in Saturday's qualifying session to take pole ahead of McLaren's Piastri and Norris, who both made small but costly mistakes. It could be a hectic fight for the win with Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari all showing strong pace in qualifying, with the top six cars covered by just 0.229 of a second. There's also a chance of rain during the race, which could upend everyone's strategy. The leading contenders are using contrasting setups which mean different strengths and weaknesses at various points on the track. Verstappen's car in particular sacrifices grip through the corners for top speed on the straights. Piastri leads the standings by 15 points from Norris, the winner of last week's Austrian Grand Prix, with Verstappen a distant third, 61 points off the lead. Yankees RHP Clarke Schmidt expected to undergo Tommy John surgery

Field Level Media 06 Jul 2025, 08:25 GMT+10 (Photo credit: John Jones-Imagn Images) One day after he was placed on the injured list with forearm tightness, it was determined that New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt likely will undergo Tommy John surgery. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Saturday afternoon that Schmidt has a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow. 'He's obviously devastated and bummed out,' Boone said. 'But Clarke's way is you've got to flip the script. He's getting his mind into, 'Let's get it fixed and get on with it and start to get after the rehab portion of it.' I think mentally, that's where he's at.' Schmidt, 29, had an MRI exam Friday after being removed from Thursday's game at Toronto after three innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in the 8-5 loss. He is 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA through 14 starts. He has 73 strikeouts and 30 walks in 78 2/3 innings. Schmidt is 23-24 with a 3.82 ERA in 97 career appearances (67 starts) since making his debut with the Yankees in 2020. A Tommy John procedure would be the second for Schmidt, who also underwent the surgery in 2017 as a junior at South Carolina shortly before the Yankees selected him in the first round of the draft. New York also added right-hander Scott Effross and left-hander Jayvien Sandridge to the active roster Friday. Both relievers allowed two runs in the Yankees' 12-6 loss to the Mets on Saturday. --Field Level Media

Rangers activate OF Wyatt Langford, option INF Justin Foscue

Field Level Media 06 Jul 2025, 05:35 GMT+10 (Photo credit: Raymond Carlin III-Imagn Images) The Texas Rangers activated outfielder Wyatt Langford from the 10-day IL on Saturday and optioned infielder Justin Foscue to Triple-A Round Rock. Langford spent the minimum time allotted on the injured list as he was designated with a left oblique strain on June 25. The Rangers' 2023 first-round draft pick (No. 4 overall) leads the club with 13 home runs in 2025 and has added 10 doubles, 31 RBIs and 11 steals. He is slashing .232/.308/.421 in 67 games. Foscue appeared in three games -- all against the Orioles -- and had one hit (a two-run RBI double on July 1) in six plate appearances. In addition, the Rangers announced the signing of veteran Rowdy Tellez to a minor-league contract. He has been assigned to Triple-A Round Rock. Tellez, 30, is an eight-year MLB veteran who appeared in 62 games for Seattle in 2025. He hit 11 home runs for the Mariners and last played on June 17 vs. Boston. The first baseman/designated hitter has 116 career home runs for the Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates (2024), Milwaukee Brewers (2021-23) and Toronto Blue Jays (2018-21). --Field Level Media
