ASEAN Urged To Infuse Gender Lens In Human Rights Agenda

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- ASEAN must step up its efforts to incorporate gender perspectives into the business and human rights agenda to ensure inclusive regional development.
Malaysia's Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Edmund Bon Tai Soon said while ASEAN has progressed in promoting gender equality, the women across the region still face structural barriers that prevent their full participation in decision making and economic life.

'Business and human rights are not solely about trade regulations or governance, but it impacts people especially women and girls, and those from vulnerable and marginalised communities whose voices have often been excluded from decision-making.
'These barriers remain deeply entrenched in our societies and too often, business structures and practices appear gender-neutral, but continue to reinforce inequality in effect,' he said in his remarks at the Regional Workshop on Gender Lens Perspective on Business and Human Rights in ASEAN here on Monday.
He emphasised that gender discrimination in business settings remains both a cause and a consequence of broader inequality, particularly for women and girls, and should be recognised as a form of violence.
'We see on our TV screens, we see in the media, news about war and genocides, that is actual violence, that is physical violence, that is something that we are against.
'But structural and cultural discrimination is also a form of violence, and I think that is something that we need to localise,' he said.
Bon added that ASEAN must ensure its frameworks reflect the lived realities of women and girls in line with international standards such as the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights.

KUALA LUMPUR: India is working to simplify the procedure for Malaysian Indians seeking the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status, acknowledging that documentation requirements remain a key challenge for applicants. In an exclusive interview with Bernama, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia B.N. Reddy said the mission recognises that many applicants face difficulties in providing proof of ancestry, particularly due to historical migration patterns and the loss of documents over time. 'Before OCI status is issued, individuals need to provide documents proving Indian origin, up to the third generation. 'The challenge is that many documents are not available because those who came here during the British era often did not retain them, and some were lost during the war period,' he said. Reddy said the High Commission has been engaging with the Indian government to allow for the use of documents issued by Malaysian authorities and former British colonial administrations to support OCI applications. 'We have tried to get our government to agree that documents issued by the Malaysian government or former Malaya authorities can be accepted. 'If a document identifies India as the country of origin, we can issue the OCI card,' he said. He said currently around 100,000 of over two million Malaysian Indians are holding OCI cards. OCI status allows foreign nationals of Indian origin to travel to India without a visa and grants certain rights, including the ability to own property under specific conditions, but does not confer citizenship.

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The sessions court has fixed Sept 24 to deliver its decision in the sedition trial of blogger Wan Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo, over a statement involving the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Wan Azri's lawyer, Rafique Rashid Ali, said the court fixed the date on Tuesday after the prosecution closed its case. Seven witnesses were called to testify. Wan Azri, 41, is accused of making the statement in a post on X, under the account sir_azri, at a condominium in Bukit Bintang at 12pm on April 29. If convicted under the Sedition Act, he faces a maximum fine of RM5,000, up to three years in prison, or both. The court is also expected to rule on July 9 in a separate sedition case involving Wan Azri. In a statement today, MA acknowledged Ballard's contributions since his return in 2023. 'Ballard has been instrumental in enhancing the performance and development of national athletes over the past two years. MA expresses its gratitude for his dedication and wishes him success in his future endeavours,' the statement read.
