Bangladeshi gets 10 months' jail for harbouring countrymen
Mohamad Masudkhan, 29, pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid, who ordered the sentence to be served from the date of arrest on April 19.
The accused had been charged with committing the offence at No. 1106, Jalan Kubang Kacang, Kampung Kubang Siput at 7.30pm on April 8.
He was alleged to have allowed 17 Bangladeshi men aged between 20 and 43 to stay at the premises under his control without valid documents or permits.
The individuals were identified as Md Shihab Uddin, Faruk Mia, Abdul Kader, Md Arif Billah, Md Ismail, Md Moslem, Md Tahin Mazi, Md Shofikul Islam, Md Ariful Islam, Sagor, Md Siyam Hosen, Md Rafi, Abdul Jalil, Md Abdul Gofur, Md Joshim Uddin, Md Momin, and Kausar Alom.
The charge was framed under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amended 2002), and punishable under Section 55E(2) of the same.
Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Naabil Mohamed Asri urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent to others.
In mitigation, defence lawyer Muhamad Fiqri Muhamad appealed for a lenient sentence, stating that this was his client's first offence and he had promised not to repeat it.

EAIC detects irregularities in issuance of medical visas
PETALING JAYA: Medical visas have been issued to foreigners without going through the proper procedures, says the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC). In a statement on Sunday (July 27), the EAIC said a special task force led by its commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Razali Ab Malik had looked into the issuance of visas by Immigration Department officers. "The task force identified several misuse of powers by officers involved who approved medical visas for foreigners although the documents submitted were not completed and had not met the criteria under the Malaysian Immigration Circular No. 10/2001," it said. The EAIC added it had referred the investigation to the Attorney General, with recommendations to charge those responsible under the Penal Code, Immigration Act 1959/63 and Passports Act 1966.

125 illegals detained in Sandakan blitz

SANDAKAN: Some 125 undocumented immigrants were detained in a joint operation led by the State Immigration Department in several areas here. The operation from 1am to 7am on Friday involved 54 officers from various Immigration enforcement divisions in Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Ranau and Kota Kinabalu. Sabah Immigration Director Datuk Sh Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said the coordinated effort targeted high-risk areas identified through public tip-offs and intelligence gathering. 'Officers screened a total of 212 individuals at various locations. Of these, 125 were found to be undocumented migrants involved in multiple immigration offences. 'Those detained include 35 adult men, 34 adult women, 27 boys and 29 girls. All were taken to the Sandakan Immigration Depot for documentation and further investigation,' she told a press conference. Among the violations identified were failure to present valid identification documents under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and overstaying beyond the permitted duration under Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act. The operation is part of the department's ongoing efforts to enforce laws under the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (Atiosom). The department reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on illegal immigrants and maintaining national security. Sh Sitti Saleha also reminded all employers not to hire or shelter undocumented migrants. Pistol, live bullets seized in Tumpat
TUMPAT: The General Operations Force (GOF) arrested two Thai nationals and seized a revolver along with 35 bullets during an operation here yesterday. GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the operation was conducted at about 7.45am at a house in Kampung Pauh Seratus near Pengkalan Kubor. "Based on intelligence received from the public, a GOF team from the Seventh Battalion, with the assistance of the Tumpat Criminal Investigation Division, raided the house. "During the raid, they found a 30-year-old Thai man and a 40-year-old Thai woman in one of the rooms. "Further checks uncovered a .38 calibre revolver loaded with six live bullets, 29 additional bullets, a spent casing, and three mobile phones," he said. Ros Azhan said urine tests for both suspects returned negative results for drug use. "Initial investigations revealed the firearm was purchased in Thailand for 37,000 baht (approximately RM4,800) for personal use," he said. He said the two are being investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960. "They are also being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering the country without valid travel documents," he said. He added that the battalion would continue operations to combat cross-border firearms smuggling along the Kelantan–Thai border. "We are committed to ensuring national security remains intact," he said.
