A 22-year-old Melbourne man faces attempted murder and aggravated assault charges after a July 3 shooting incident in West Melbourne.
Abner Manuel Pagan Otero, who turned himself in to police July 4, was booked into Brevard County Jail on a no-bond status.
Police responding to reports of shots fired in the area of South Wickham Road and Coral Drive found several 9mm shell casings, West Melbourne Police said in a release. While the individuals involved had fled the scene, detective reconstructed the incident, identifying a victim and suspect through surveillance footage obtained from a nearby business, the release stated. Otero, police said, is seen discharging a firearm multiple times in the direction of the victim.
An investigation is ongoing.

Police searching for man who shot fellow passenger on DDOT bus in Detroit

Detroit police say they are investigating why a man got up on a DDOT bus near 8 Mile and Sherwood, walked over to a fellow passenger, and shot him once in the upper chest. The 26-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries around 7:25 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, and is expected to survive. Meanwhile, the suspect, who exited the bus after the shooting and hitchhiked to the area of Mound and Davison, is still on the loose, police say. First Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald said in a video distributed to the media by the department that investigators don't know what prompted the shooting. There didn't appear to be an altercation beforehand and it's not clear yet if the two knew each other, he said. "It's odd that he just stood up, walked over toward him, and shot one time," Fitzgerald said of the suspect, described as being in his mid-50s. Fitzgerald said the public should expect a heavier police presence in Detroit's transit system, including random bus boardings by officers. The night before, a bus driver stabbed someone trying to get on a bus near 7 Mile and Gratiot after that person spit on the driver during an argument over the bus fare. Fitzgerald said the driver could face charges. "We gotta make sure it's safe," Fitzgerald said. "It's just too much." Andrea Sahouri covers criminal justice for the Detroit Free Press. 2 suspects charged in fatal shooting at Detroit's Skinner Playfield

Two men have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting at Detroit's Skinner Playfield, according to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office in a news release. Brandon Lee Ware, 18, and William McKinley Wheeler, 19, were set to be arraigned Saturday, July 5. Both were charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, two counts of discharge from a vehicle causing death, one count of discharge from a vehicle causing serious injury and five counts of felony firearm. Both suspects were arrested Wednesday, July 2. The triple shooting occurred June 27 at the park located at 12800 Kelly Road, next to Denby High School. Samir Josiah Grubbs, 4, was at the park with his mother and siblings when he was shot to death before he could make it up the playground slide's ladder. Dayvion Shelmonson-Bey, 18, was also killed. A 17-year-old was also shot and survived. The shooting allegedly occurred after an earlier altercation on a bus where a man snatched Ware's ski mask off his head, according to Worthy's office. Ware allegedly left the bus, went to a location on Riad Street and was a passenger in a truck driven by Wheeler. They allegedly drove to Duchess Street and Ware fired at individuals at the park that he thought were involved in the bus incident. "In this day and age of social media and electronics when less children are playing outside, it is refreshing when children want to go outside and enjoy one of their local parks. Because of the alleged criminal actions of the now charged defendants in this case, a precious four-year-old is dead and another wounded," Worthy said in the news release. "This is truly an American tragedy and hopefully it is not one that will have a chilling effect on children simply wanting to play outdoors."
