Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman calls for fast-tracking reforms at GIFT City
Ahmedabad: Union finance minister
Nirmala Sitharaman
on Thursday reviewed the progress of GIFT City in Gandhinagar and called for fast-tracking reforms to enhance its competitiveness and align it with the govt's vision of 'Viksit Bharat @2047'.
Reviewing the progress of the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Gandhinagar, the minister said India must use its technological strength and large domestic market to position GIFT IFSC as a leading global financial hub. She also underlined the need to attract foreign capital through structured and well-regulated channels.
Sitharaman chaired two high-level meetings during her visit. One was with GIFT City officials and regulatory stakeholders along with state and central ministers and officials, and the second with market participants.
"Reforms must be implemented over the next few years to accelerate growth and attract foreign capital through well-regulated channels," she said. "India's advantages in technology and its large domestic market should be used to build competitiveness at IFSC.
Regulators must identify the financial sector's aspirational needs to support this effort," Sitharaman added.

"Efforts should be made to make GIFT IFSC more cost-effective and attractive for high net-worth individual (HNI) investments," she said. According to Sitharaman, there is also a need to mobilise sovereign and pension funds at the centre and align talent development with its growing mandate.
"India's position as a major gold importer should be leveraged to scale up the India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX) and strengthen price discovery, positioning GIFT IFSC as a global bullion hub," she said. GIFT City should also be developed as a modern, sustainable smart city with infrastructure that supports its role as a global financial hub and helps attract skilled talent, Sitharaman said.

Government asks PSBs to step up lending after RBI's rate cut
NEW DELHI: Govt on Friday nudged banks to step up lending in view of healthy balance sheets and the reduction in interest rates by RBI. While reviewing the performance of state-run banks, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman asked banks to prioritise deposit mobilisation to support credit growth and pushed them to undertake special drives and leverage their massive branch network to raise resources. During bank-wise presentations, the financial services secretary asked the lenders to make use of the clean books to lend, especially to small businesses. The finance minister flagged the energy sector, especially renewables, as a focus and asked banks to develop a credit model to support small modular nuclear reactors. "Deepening corporate lending in productive sectors was also emphasised, with a strong focus on maintaining robust underwriting and risk management standards," an official statement said. The finance minister also suggested that banks should "proactively identify" emerging commercial growth areas for the next decade, which can aid profitability and growth. The other important message was on improving customer experience, including in branches and simple online and offline platforms. Sitharaman focused on expanding the branch presence, especially expansion in metro and urban centres. The comments come at a time when private lenders have stepped up efforts in urban centres, which are seen to be more profitable. This will mean public sector players will have to double down on effort on this front, while balancing rural and semi-urban focus. In fact, Sitharaman also asked banks to focus on manpower requirements - including existing and arising vacancies - as branches are often not adequately staffed following expansion initiatives. Several banks have already started initiatives on improving customer service and improving the overall branch experience. Banks have been instructed to scale up efforts on financial inclusion schemes and expand their presence in GIFT City. Starting Tuesday, govt is launching a three-month financial inclusion saturation drive. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
