CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The Texas Fury Texans and Jaguars Elite won titles in the NFL Flag Championships on Sunday.
The Texans beat the Bad Rabbits Cowboys 19-0 to win the High School Girls division. The Jaguars beat Showtime 13-0 to take the 14U Boys championship.
Emery Beckett completed all eight of her pass attempts in the title game for the Texans, throwing two touchdown passes to Zahra Hill and one to Kelsey Quinn. Their coach, Keenan Hughes, was recently hired as the first coach for the women's flag football team at Concordia University in Austin, Texas.
The Jaguars were led by tournament MVP Brysen Wright, whose one-handed catch earlier in the event drew an incredulous social media response from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The 14-year-old Wright scored 10 touchdowns in seven games.
"It's a fast-paced, exciting and explosive game,' Jaguars coach David Price said. 'I think guys like Brysen are really going to help get more eyes on the sport.'

Qatar sets sights on 2036 Olympics by creating bid committee for the Games

Associated Press DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The Qatar Olympic Committee on Wednesday announced the creation of a bid committee for the 2036 Olympics and Paralympic Games, confirming its intention to host the events that would come 14 years after it staged the World Cup. It's the latest attempt by the Middle Eastern country to host the Summer Games, after Doha was overlooked by the International Olympic Committee in favor of Brisbane for the 2032 Olympics. On two other occasions, Doha did not progress to the IOC's list of candidates. The Qatari committee said the country, which was criticized by human rights defenders ahead of the World Cup, 'has firmly established itself as a global hub for major international sporting events ... (and) has successfully hosted numerous world championships across multiple disciplines and invested in world-class infrastructure that reflects the country's long-term commitment to excellence and sustainability in sport.' The QOC said the bid committee will 'engage national stakeholders and international partners to shape a proposal that is technically strong, socially inclusive and globally relevant.' 'The bid will reflect a unified national vision that builds on Qatar's track record, speaks to the potential of the region and upholds the enduring values of excellence, friendship and respect that define the Olympic and Paralympic movements,' the committee said. The committee didn't address when in 2036 it would propose to host the Games. The World Cup had to be held in November and December because of the extreme heat in the region. The IOC prefers the traditional July-August slot. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the Qatar Olympic Committee, will serve as bid committee chairman. ___ AP Sports: in this topic

Cox/UPI | License Photo July 23 (UPI) -- The Houston Texans placed Joe Mixon on the non-football injury (NFI) list, the team announced Wednesday. Mixon ranked ninth in rushing yards per game in 2024. The Texans also placed running backs Dameon Pierce and J.J. Taylor and wide receiver Tank Dell, among eight others, on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. They placed cornerback Alijah Huzzie on the non-football injury list alongside Mixon. The Texans signed cornerback Arthur Maulet and waived cornerback Keydrain Calligan in corresponding transactions. Mixon, 28, totaled 1,016 rushing yards and 11 scores on 245 carries and 309 yards and a score on 36 catches over 14 starts last season. He missed three games due to an ankle injury. He also missed 2025 organized team activities and minicamp due to an ankle issue. The two-time Pro Bowl selection eclipsed 1,200 yards from scrimmage six of his last seven seasons. Mixon signed a three-year, $25.5 million contract with the Texans last off-season. He is set to earn a base salary of about $7 million in 2025. Nick Chubb and Woody Marks are among the other running backs on the Texans roster. Texans players reported for training camp Tuesday at Houston Methodist Training Center. They will take on the Minnesota Vikings in their preseason opener Aug. 9 in Minneapolis.

Will Johnson contract: Salary, details, guarantees for Arizona Cardinals rookie CB

Johnson gets three years of full guarantees and a partial fourth year. At the beginning of last week, 30 of the NFL's second-round draft picks remained unsigned, including Arizona Cardinals cornerback Will Johnson. As the dust cleared Tuesday, only hours before the team reported to camp, Johnson became the 31st No. 2 pick to sign. Only one remains unsigned — Cleveland Browns running back Quinshon Judkins. The fourth pick in the round, his situation has been complicated by a domestic violence arrest on July 12. The prior snail's pace of signings was thanks to the unprecedented contracts signed in early May by the first two selections in the round: Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins. They each signed fully guaranteed contracts, something that had never happened before in the second round. As agents advocated for their players to achieve more than the customary guarantees while teams pushed against it, the question was how many others would get full guarantees. It turns out there were five more, ending with Saints quarterback Tyler Shough, the eighth choice in the round. For Johnson, slotted at 15 in the round, his deal was linked to others around him. It started with Bills defensive tackle T.J. Sanders, who at No. 9, had 75 percent of his fourth-year base salary guaranteed. After that, it was Jets tight end Mason Taylor (60 percent), 49ers defensive tackle Alfred Collins (45 percent), Cowboys defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku (38 percent), Colts defensive end JT Tuimoloau (30 percent), Rams tight end Terrance Ferguson (23 percent) and then Johnson, who had 17.55 percent of his fourth-year base guaranteed. After Johnson, Texans tackle Aireontae Ersery was at 12.11 percent), Bengals linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. at 8.25 percent), Seahawks tight end Elijah Arroyo (4.95 percent) and Panthers edge Nic Scourton at No. 19 in the round (3 percent). At No. 20, Titans edge Oluwafemi Oladejo had his first three years guaranteed, but after that and through the remainder of the round, all players had partial guarantees in the third year of their contracts. Will Johnson contract details The total value of Johnson's deal is $9,410,768 with $7,660,118 (81.4 percent) guaranteed, including a $3,484,196 signing bonus. The base salaries are $840,000 this season; $1,267,762 in 2026; $1,695,524 in 2027 and $2,123,286 in 2028. In that fourth year, the 17.55 percent guarantee is $372,636. His salary-cap charge for this year is $1,711,049. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast.
