New support hub to open in Newport to meet rising demand
Located on 192 Commercial Road, Feed Newport and Cultural Food Hub is a buzzing community hub offering far more than just standard food parcels.
Handing out baby essentials, cultural foods and hot meals, this organisation has become a lifeline for many.
Founded in 2020 by Tariq Khan, the food hub started with the goal of supporting ethnic minority communities but has since evolved into a vital support network for anyone in Newport who needs it, from domestic abuse victims to refugees and families living in temporary accommodation.
They also offer a soup kitchen every Friday from 11.30am to 1.30pm, funded by the National Lottery.
Mr Khan's motive for starting Newport Support Network 'sounds cliché', he said, "but a support worker helped me in the past and, when I was able to, I wanted to give back.
"Fast forward 20 years, I became a qualified support worker and started Feed Newport."
The organisation now operates as a cultural food hub, soup kitchen, baby bank and 'everything in between', said Mr Khan.
Services run throughout the week, providing catering to a diverse range of dietary needs, including halal, vegan and gluten-free.
Newport Support Network is now expanding further.
A new site at 92 Commercial Street is set to open in the coming weeks, offering what Mr Khan describes as an "open table and pantry, which is a space for families, providing them with English lessons, cooking lessons and community workshops."
They also provide baby food, nappies and other essentials to new mums and families in need.
This initiative supplies essential items for infants and toddlers to ease some of the pressures of early parenthood, especially for families experiencing poverty, homelessness, or crisis.
"We're creating a space where people can access everything under one roof," he said.
Mr Khan is also working with Asda's community scheme and local farm shops to ensure food sustainability, while making new investments, including a £35,000 Comic Relief sponsor, which aims to create jobs and reduce the number of empty shops in Newport.
"It's just good people coming together," Mr Khan said.
"When you see so much negativity on social media, it's important to show that there are still people out here who care."
How You Can Help
Newport Support Network welcomes all kinds of support.
They're currently accepting non-perishable food items and monetary donations and are looking for volunteers.

Every contribution helps build a Newport where everyone feels welcome, supported and seen.
To get involved, visit the Feed Newport website, or stop by their centres at 192 Commercial Road, NP20 2PP, or the soon-to-open 92 Commercial Street.

Iconic cafe serving the 'best full English breakfast' in London has been saved
London's most famous greasy spoon which has starred in film and TV has reopened to hungry visitors. The Regency Cafe in Westminster claimed to sell the 'best English breakfast in London' after opening in 1946. Fans of the cheap fry ups and old school service feared the caff would be gone forever after it closed in December 2024 when its owners put the business up for sale. But after just two days of viewings, the Regency Cafe was snapped up by new owners Fevzi and Zafer Gungor. Christie & Co confirmed to Metro that the sale was completed on Tuesday, with the kitchen serving customers again the same day. The new bosses, who own dozens of eateries in the capital, want to add a new flavour to the famous venue, by introducing a line of merchandise and expanding overseas. Fevzi Gungor said: 'I'm honoured to take over such a historic and much-loved institution. As someone born in Turkey and raised in White City, West London, my journey started humbly – delivering newspapers at 13 before school – and I've never looked back. 'My aim isn't to change what people already love about Regency Café, but to enhance it – extending opening hours, refreshing equipment, strengthening our social media presence, and introducing merchandise that captures the spirit of this iconic spot. 'We're also exploring partnerships with major British brands for co-branded sauces, beans, and more. 'We may look at expanding the kitchen to cater for Halal dining, reflecting the diverse communities and tourists we serve, including many from the Arab Peninsula. 'In time, I'd love to see the Regency name in key global cities – Amsterdam, Berlin, Istanbul, Dubai – but our immediate focus is on Regency Street.' Regency Cafe has played a starring role in a string of TV shows and films set in London. More Trending It has featured in the crime thriller Layer Cake (2004), which starred Daniel Craig before he was cast as James Bond. The famous fry ups also made an appearance in Oscar nominated films Pride (2014), which followed the efforts of London LGBTQ+'s community to support striking miners in the 1980s, and Elton John biopic Rocketman (2019), The business was sold to the pair at an undisclosed price, but it was originally listed for £170,000 through Christie & Co. EU and Japan agree on closer cooperation
Japan and the European Union (EU) aim to further strengthen their cooperation in the areas of economic security, trade and defence. For this purpose, both sides launched a "Competitiveness Alliance" at a summit meeting in Tokyo. "We will expand our cooperation on increasing the resilience of supply chains and reducing strategic dependencies," a joint final declaration stated. At the same time, the EU and Japan emphasised the importance of promoting free trade and multilateralism. Closer cooperation has become even more important against the backdrop of a "complex global geopolitical environment, in particular Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, the serious challenges to a free and open Indo-Pacific, and other regional and international issues", the declaration continued. The EU and Japan are determined "to work with like-minded international partners to address these challenges". This article was translated to English using an AI tool.
