Liberty Media Given Nod In MotoGP Acquisition Pursuit By European Commission

Liberty is set to acquire 84 per cent of MotoGP with Dorna retaining 16 per cent in a deal valued around the 4.3 billion euro mark.
The European Commission gave Liberty Media, the group that owns Formula One, the nod in their bid to acquire MotoGP on Monday.
Liberty is set to acquire 84 per cent of MotoGP with Dorna retaining 16 per cent in a deal valued at around the 4.3 billion euro mark, following the unconditional approval of the European body.
Liberty agreed to buy the motorcycle event from Dorna Sports in April 2024, but the Commission opened an investigation to determine if the merger held up against the integrity of competition rules.
Dorna chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta, who will continue to run MotoGP alongside his team as they have since 1998, said, 'MotoGP is one of the most thrilling sports on earth, and we look forward to accelerating the sport's growth and expanding its reach to even more fans around the world."
'Liberty is the best possible partner for our sport and the entire MotoGP community, and we are excited to create even greater value for our fans, commercial partners and everyone competing," he said.
'The deal is now expected to close no later than July 3, 2025, opening the door to a new era for the sport," the MotoGP website read.
The Commission had been concerned that the transaction could lead to an increase in licensing prices for broadcasting rights to motorsport events. It also examined Liberty Media's relationship with its parent company, Liberty Global, a leading cable operator in several European countries.
The Commission announced it was satisfied that, in the European national markets it investigated, the companies are not close competitors for the licensing of broadcasting rights for sports content on Monday.
The statement indicated there was insufficient evidence that Mr. John Malone, Liberty Media's largest shareholder, could exert decisive influence over Liberty Global.
Liberty took over F1 in the year 2017, and has implemented an expansion strategy since, with a penchant for spectacle.

Delhi LG unveils restored Roshanara Club, calls it big moment for Delhiites

New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena on Sunday inaugurated the restored Roshanara Club, a heritage structure situated in North Delhi and regarded as the birthplace of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Spread across 22 acres, Roshanara Club has been a symbol of culture, sport, and heritage for over a century. 'It is a big moment for us as this heritage club has been restored and relaunched. I congratulate the citizens of Delhi on this occasion," Saxena said at the event. He added that several heritage structures in Delhi have been restored in the past three years, with more planned in the future. During his visit to the club on January 12, 2023, the Lt Governor found the once-prestigious institution in a state of serious neglect, with a crumbling facade and damaged infrastructure. 'The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) officially took over the sealed premises on September 29, 2023, and launched an extensive restoration drive under Saxena's continuous guidance," a statement said. The project aimed not only to restore the architectural beauty of the club but also to modernize it to meet contemporary recreational and fitness needs. 'The club's iconic features, including its European-style doors and windows, Mangalore-tiled roof, antique chandeliers, and wooden trusses, were carefully preserved. In addition, the club now houses a wide range of modern indoor facilities such as a lounge, dining hall, kids' play area, gym, card and billiards rooms, yoga and sauna areas, and a library," the DDA said said in the statement. Upgraded outdoor amenities include grass, clay, and synthetic tennis courts, cricket practice pitches, a mini football zone, basketball courts, and a dedicated jogger's park. With its restoration complete, Roshanara Club is once again poised to be a premier hub for sports, leisure, and cultural heritage in the capital. Man United Bigger Than The Club World Cup! US Record Crowd Recorded For Friendly vs West Ham

Last Updated: Manchester United's 2-1 win over West Ham at MetLife Stadium set a new U.S. soccer attendance record with 82,566 fans. Bruno Fernandes scored both goals. Manchester United's 2–1 victory over West Ham United at MetLife Stadium on Saturday wasn't just a showcase of pre-season Premier League football—it was a historic night for U.S. soccer attendance. A staggering crowd of 82,566 fans packed the stadium, setting a new record for the largest attendance at a football match in the United States in 2025. The turnout eclipsed the previous high set earlier this year during the FIFA Club World Cup final, which drew 81,118 spectators. The match, part of United's U.S. pre-season tour, saw The MetLife Stadium, home to the NFL's New York Giants and New York Jets, transform into a sea of red and claret as supporters turned out in full force. On the field, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes stole the spotlight with a commanding performance, scoring both goals in the victory. The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder was clinical and composed, reminding fans why he was named United's Player of the Year last season. The match was competitive throughout, with West Ham pulling one back in the second half, but the result remained in United's favor. The quality of play, combined with the electric crowd atmosphere, created a memorable experience for all in attendance. Saturday's attendance milestone underscores the surging interest in European football among American audiences. With elite clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich regularly including the U.S. on their pre-season itineraries, fan engagement has soared. Events like the Club World Cup, which made its U.S. debut this year, and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup—hosted jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico—are contributing to a soccer boom in the region. MetLife Stadium, which will host matches during the 2026 World Cup, continues to prove itself as a prime venue for the sport's biggest occasions. Following the record-breaking night, Manchester United will continue their U.S. tour with upcoming fixtures on the West Coast. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Donald Trump, EU's Ursula von der Leyen to meet on Sunday to clinch trade deal

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to clinch a trade deal for Europe that would likely see a 15% baseline tariff on most EU goods, but end months of uncertainty for EU companies. Before the meeting, expected at 1530 GMT on Trump's golf course in Turnberry, western Scotland, U.S. and EU teams were in final talks on tariffs for crucial sectors like cars, steel, aluminium or pharmaceuticals. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick flew to Scotland on Saturday and EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic arrived on Sunday morning. 'We're cautiously optimistic that there will be a deal reached,' said a Trump administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. 'But it's not over till it's over.' Ambassadors of EU governments, on a weekend trip to Greenland organised by the Danish presidency of the EU, held a teleconference with EU Commission officials on Sunday to agree on the amount of leeway von der Leyen would have in the talks. In case there is no deal and the U.S. imposes 30% tariffs from August 1, the EU has prepared counter-tariffs on 93 billion euros ($109 billion) of U.S. goods. EU diplomats have said a deal would likely include a broad 15% tariff on EU goods imported into the U.S., mirroring the U.S.-Japan trade deal, along with a 50% tariff on European steel and aluminium for which there could be export quotas. The EU deal would be a huge prize, given that the U.S. and EU are each other's largest trading partners by far and account for a third of global trade. EU officials are hopeful that a 15% baseline tariff would also apply to cars, replacing the current 27.5% auto tariff. Some expect the 27-nation bloc may be able to secure exemptions from the 15% baseline tariff for its aerospace industry and for spirits, though probably not for wine. The EU could also pledge to buy more liquefied natural gas from the U.S., a long-standing offer, and boost investment in the United States. Trump told reporters there was 'not a lot' of wiggle room on the 50% tariffs that the U.S. has on steel and aluminium imports, adding, 'because if I do it for one, I have to do it for all.' The U.S. president, in Scotland for a few days of golfing and bilateral meetings, told reporters upon his arrival on Friday evening that von der Leyen was a highly respected leader and he was looking forward to meeting with her. He said there was a 50-50 chance that the two sides could reach a framework trade pact, adding that Brussels wanted to 'make a deal very badly'. The EU now faces U.S. tariffs on more than 70% of its exports, with 50% on steel and aluminium, an extra 25% on cars and car parts on top of the existing 2.5% and a 10% levy on most other EU goods. Trump has said that without a deal, he would hike the rate to 30% on August 1, a level EU officials said would wipe out whole chunks of transatlantic commerce. Further tariffs on copper and pharmaceuticals are looming. The uncertainty and higher tariffs have already hit profits of EU companies in several sectors. A 15% tariff on most EU goods would remove uncertainty but would be seen by many in Europe as a poor outcome compared to the initial European ambition of a zero-for-zero tariff deal on all industrial goods. Seeking to learn from Japan, which secured a 15% baseline tariff with the U.S. in a deal earlier this week, EU negotiators spoke to their Japanese counterparts in preparation for Sunday's meeting. For Trump, aiming to reorder the global economy and reduce decades-old U.S. trade deficits, a deal with the EU would be the biggest trade agreement, surpassing the $550 billion deal with Japan. So far, he has reeled in agreements with Britain, Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam, although his administration has failed to deliver on a promise of '90 deals in 90 days.'
