BYD Atto 2: Malaysia getting larger 51.1kWh battery, stalk drive selector, and more
This is based on the EV's staging site for Malaysia that we have discovered online.
Malaysia's Atto 2 may come with a bigger capacity battery

In many ways, this discovery feels like a deja vu as we found the staging site more or less in the same way as per BYD Dolphin's price list ahead of its official launch event in 2023.
However, we couldn't find the price list for Atto 2, though…we guess BYD Sime Motors people can take a breather now.
If the information on the staging site is accurate, then the new EV will be released into our market with just one variant called the Atto 2 Premium.
The biggest difference that the Malaysian unit has when compared to the existing version for Europe and China is that its LFP-based BYD Blade battery has a higher capacity.
At the moment, the Yuan Up in China is being offered with either a 32kWh or a 45.12kWh battery pack.
In Europe, the Atto 2 is currently available with a 45.12kWh battery pack while a version with a higher capacity battery pack will be offered in 'coming months'.
Now, let's circle back to Malaysia: the staging site said that the Atto 2 Premium for our market is equipped with a larger 51.13kWh battery pack.
This allows the new EV to deliver up to 410km of NEDC-rated range or around 340km if you convert that figure to WLTP.
The Atto 2 Premium for Malaysia does have a front-wheel drive setup with a 130kW (174hp) electric motor that also produces 290Nm of torque, similar to the European and high-spec Chinese options.
The staging site also said that the Malaysian unit is capable of going from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
Other details that the staging site has also listed include Macpherson strut front suspension, torsion beam rear suspension, and 17-inch wheels with 215/60 tyres.
In addition to that, the site has also listed three colours for Atto 2, such as Ski White, Harbour Grey, and Breeze Green.
Malaysia's Atto 2 may also feature a stalk drive selector

As we browse around the staging site looking for more details, we notice something interesting about interior photos that were published on the site. Specifically, it appears that the Malaysian unit may come with a stalk drive selector.
As a comparison, the drive selector for the European and Chinese units is located on the centre console. BYD essentially used the same drive selector from M6 for Atto 2 in these markets.

Given the difference, the button layout on the centre console for the Malaysian unit will also be different if the picture on the staging site is accurate. Other features that might be included with Atto 2 for the Malaysian market Image taken from Atto 2's staging site for the Malaysian market.
Aside from the price tag, there are still a number of details missing from the staging site. That being said, we believe that the unit that Malaysia is getting will be similar to the right-hand drive (RHD) unit for the Hong Kong market.
For one, the HK unit features a 51.13kWh battery and stalk drive selector. If our hunch is on point, then we might be seeing the Atto 2 for the Malaysian market to also come with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment display, and a 50W wireless phone charger.
Based on the HK unit, the Atto 2 for our market may also come with 11kW AC charging module alongside the support for DC charging speed of up to 82kW. It may also have a 400L boot space which can be expanded further to 1,340L once you fold the EV's rear seats.
Of course, do note that nothing is confirmed until it is officially confirmed by BYD Sime Motors itself. So, make sure to tune in for more details from the launch event of Atto 2 on Thursday, July 24. — SoyaCincau

Corporate Malaysia's Q2 earnings likely to be damp squib
Maybank Investment Bank forecasts a modest 2.5% earnings growth for the FBM KLCI in 2025. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Investors hoping for better second-quarter (Q2) earnings from listed companies will likely be left high and dry as Corporate Malaysia is expected to continue the underperformance of Q1 2025. Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) said the upcoming Q2 results season may be muted, reflecting challenges from external uncertainties, particularly the ongoing US-Malaysia tariff negotiations. 'The Q2 results season may yet be another unexciting one but at least one with fewer earnings downgrades,' it said in a strategy note. The research house forecasts a modest 2.5% earnings growth for the FBM KLCI this year, primarily weighed down by the banking sector. However, it anticipates a stronger rebound in 2026 with a projected growth of 7.7%. It has a base case target of 1,660 points for the FBM KLCI, pegged to 14.4 times 2026 estimated price-to-earnings ratio (PER). 'Our base case assumes further de-escalation in trade tensions and favourable outcome from tariff negotiations,' it added. Some bright spots Despite the softer external environment, Maybank IB said there are 'bright spots' to be found. It noted Malaysia's domestic economic fundamentals appear encouraging, pointing to robust consumer activity, a sustained investment cycle, and signs of resilient private demand as cushioning the impact of weaker exports. The economy grew at 4.5% in Q2, slightly faster than the 4.4% year-on-year growth in Q1 as resilient consumer demand offset weaker exports. This suggests a steady growth momentum and indicates external headwinds due to US tariffs are being mitigated by domestic tailwinds, it noted. Maybank IB said investors should watch out for weakness in the technology sector. Banks are 'unlikely to yield much surprise' even as it watches for lower loan growth. However, it expects some positive momentum for construction, healthcare, property, and more selectively, the oil and gas, and utilities sectors. It said most plantation companies would be weaker quarter-on-quarter due to lower crude palm oil prices, though some could book gains from disposal and forex exchange movements. Consumer and real estate investment trusts are expected to be softer, after a seasonally strong first quarter.

South Korea's finance minister, trade envoy to hold tariff talks with US counterparts
South Korea's trade minister Yeo Han-koo said he would seek to base the talks around forming a manufacturing partnership with the US. (EPA Images pic) SEOUL : South Korea's new finance minister and the country's top trade envoy will meet their US counterparts in Washington on Friday for talks on US tariffs, finance minister Koo Yun-cheol said today. The country's foreign and industry ministers will also visit the US for trade discussions as early as this week, Koo told reporters after a meeting of economic ministers. Koo took office yesterday. The four officials complete a new cabinet team under President Lee Jae Myung, who was sworn in on June 4 after winning a snap election called after his predecessor's ouster for trying to declare martial law. The political turmoil that ensued delayed South Korea's response to US President Donald Trump's punishing tariff regime imposed on dozens of trade partners, including key industrial powerhouses that are also security allies. 'Koo and trade minister Yeo Han-koo will hold talks with US treasury secretary Scott Bessent and US trade representative Jamieson Greer on Friday at the request of the US officials,' the finance minister said. 'We've had discussions from the perspective of national interest and pragmatism and we'll do our best to prepare a meticulous strategy until we're leaving,' Koo said, declining to say whether Seoul was hoping to push back the Aug 1 deadline before reciprocal tariffs set by Trump are due to come in. Yeo said today that he would seek to base the talks around forming a manufacturing partnership with the US. Yesterday, South Korea's new industry minister Kim Jung-kwan said tariff talks were in a critical phase that could result in a range of possible outcomes and pledged an all-out effort to wrap up negotiations by Aug 1. Trump has vowed to slap tariffs on a range of countries including South Korea to reduce what he called unfair trade imbalances. On Saturday, Japan's top tariff negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, said he planned to visit Washington this week to hold further ministerial-level talks, as Tokyo hopes to clinch a deal by its Aug 1 deadline.

Tesla's darkening outlook to test Robotaxi vision pushed by Musk
TESLA Inc.'s core car-making business is facing a deteriorating outlook, providing a major test of Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk's ability to lift the stock price with his vision of a self-driving future. The electric-vehicle maker is expected to post the sharpest drop in revenues in more than a decade when it reports earnings on Wednesday, as demand for Tesla products dries up. And with federal incentives meant to encourage EV sales set to disappear later this year, things are likely to get even more challenging in the coming months. That's piling pressure on Musk to push Tesla's robotaxi program, that began operating on a limited basis in Austin last month. It's increasingly seen as underpinning the value in the company's shares, which have rallied 50% from an April low. 'Tesla, more than any other large-cap stock, relies on investor confidence in the company's long-term vision of the future,' said Nicholas Colas, the co-founder of DataTrek Research, who spent more than a decade covering the auto industry as an analyst. Tesla's sales have suffered from an aging lineup and the backlash against Musk's role in US President Donald Trump's administration, where he was charged with drastically reducing government spending. The stock has taken a hit as well, down 31% from a December peak when Musk's proximity to Trump was seen as a boon for the company. Still, Tesla shares remain richly valued at 142 times projected profits, compared with 27 times for the Nasdaq 100 Index, reflecting a significant disconnect from the company's souring financial prospects. Wall Street has slashed 2025 profit estimates by 28% over the past three months, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. For the second quarter, analysts are projecting adjusted earnings of 42 cents a share on revenue of $22.6 billion, down 18% and 11%, respectively, from the same period a year ago. That would represent the biggest drop in quarterly sales since 2012. Tesla's auto manufacturing business, which generated 90% of the company's revenue in 2024 and contributed 94% of its gross margin, has also been hampered by a production pause to retool assembly lines for the redesigned Model Y and rising competition in China from local brands. Then there's Trump's signature tax bill, which will remove two key incentives for the EV industry. A $7,500 tax credit that applies to most American-made EVs will go away starting in September, as will a separate program that penalized traditional carmakers for failing to adhere to federal fuel economy standards. The sale of those credits generated $2.8 billion in revenue for Tesla last year. Tesla bulls, however, remain undeterred. Nearly half of the analysts covering the company recommend buying the stock, a share that hasn't changed since the beginning of the year. The robotaxi is the key reason for the optimism, with Musk predicting that hundreds of thousands of these vehicles will be on the road by late 2026. Long-term investors also point to other futuristic ambitions such as the humanoid robot called Optimus, and a faith that Musk can keep pushing the boundaries of innovation. Roughly 95% of Tesla's share price is tied to what the company might do in the future, according to the calculations of DataTrek's Colas. Compared to the rest of the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks, only Nvidia Corp. and Microsoft Corp. are close, at around 75%. Tesla is now aiming to bring its driver-less taxis to California and Arizona. Earlier this month, Musk said robotaxis could launch in the San Francisco Bay area 'probably in a month or two,' pending regulatory approvals. But the company faces major competition. Google parent Alphabet Inc.'s self-driving car unit Waymo already has been operating a similar service in Los Angeles, Austin, Phoenix and San Francisco. It also just began offering trips through Uber Technologies Inc.'s platform in Atlanta, with Miami and Washington expected next year. Separately, Uber is also teaming up with EV-maker Lucid Group Inc. and self-driving tech startup Nuro to launch a robotaxi fleet. It's this focus on long-term growth that makes Tesla the ultimate 'story' driven stock, said Joseph Spak, a UBS analyst. 'The Tesla story is about Musk,' said Joe Gilbert, portfolio manager at Integrity Asset Management. 'If he can give confidence to the market that he is re-focused on robotaxi and the brand, the stock can work.' –BLOOMBERG
