BYD Atto 2: Malaysia getting larger 51.1kWh battery, stalk drive selector, and more
This is based on the EV's staging site for Malaysia that we have discovered online.
Malaysia's Atto 2 may come with a bigger capacity battery

In many ways, this discovery feels like a deja vu as we found the staging site more or less in the same way as per BYD Dolphin's price list ahead of its official launch event in 2023.
However, we couldn't find the price list for Atto 2, though…we guess BYD Sime Motors people can take a breather now.
If the information on the staging site is accurate, then the new EV will be released into our market with just one variant called the Atto 2 Premium.
The biggest difference that the Malaysian unit has when compared to the existing version for Europe and China is that its LFP-based BYD Blade battery has a higher capacity.
At the moment, the Yuan Up in China is being offered with either a 32kWh or a 45.12kWh battery pack.
In Europe, the Atto 2 is currently available with a 45.12kWh battery pack while a version with a higher capacity battery pack will be offered in 'coming months'.
Now, let's circle back to Malaysia: the staging site said that the Atto 2 Premium for our market is equipped with a larger 51.13kWh battery pack.
This allows the new EV to deliver up to 410km of NEDC-rated range or around 340km if you convert that figure to WLTP.
The Atto 2 Premium for Malaysia does have a front-wheel drive setup with a 130kW (174hp) electric motor that also produces 290Nm of torque, similar to the European and high-spec Chinese options.
The staging site also said that the Malaysian unit is capable of going from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
Other details that the staging site has also listed include Macpherson strut front suspension, torsion beam rear suspension, and 17-inch wheels with 215/60 tyres.
In addition to that, the site has also listed three colours for Atto 2, such as Ski White, Harbour Grey, and Breeze Green.
Malaysia's Atto 2 may also feature a stalk drive selector

As we browse around the staging site looking for more details, we notice something interesting about interior photos that were published on the site. Specifically, it appears that the Malaysian unit may come with a stalk drive selector.
As a comparison, the drive selector for the European and Chinese units is located on the centre console. BYD essentially used the same drive selector from M6 for Atto 2 in these markets.

Given the difference, the button layout on the centre console for the Malaysian unit will also be different if the picture on the staging site is accurate. Other features that might be included with Atto 2 for the Malaysian market Image taken from Atto 2's staging site for the Malaysian market.
Aside from the price tag, there are still a number of details missing from the staging site. That being said, we believe that the unit that Malaysia is getting will be similar to the right-hand drive (RHD) unit for the Hong Kong market.
For one, the HK unit features a 51.13kWh battery and stalk drive selector. If our hunch is on point, then we might be seeing the Atto 2 for the Malaysian market to also come with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment display, and a 50W wireless phone charger.
Based on the HK unit, the Atto 2 for our market may also come with 11kW AC charging module alongside the support for DC charging speed of up to 82kW. It may also have a 400L boot space which can be expanded further to 1,340L once you fold the EV's rear seats.
Of course, do note that nothing is confirmed until it is officially confirmed by BYD Sime Motors itself. So, make sure to tune in for more details from the launch event of Atto 2 on Thursday, July 24. — SoyaCincau

Singapore's SMRT fined RM7.9m for six-day MRT disruption in 2024, down from initial RM9.9m
SINGAPORE, July 26 — Singapore public transport operator SMRT will pay a reduced fine of S$2.4 million (RM7.9 million) over a major six-day MRT disruption on the East-West Line in September 2024, following a review by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The penalty is S$600,000 less than the initial amount announced in June. According to The Straits Times, the updated fine was revealed in an LTA statement yesterday. The regulator said it had considered SMRT's representations and the challenges the operator faced during the incident, including pandemic-related supply chain disruptions that delayed spare parts for train overhauls. The fine will go into the Public Transport Fund to help lower-income households with commuting costs, said LTA. SMRT has also been directed to invest at least S$600,000 within a year to strengthen its maintenance capabilities and submit documented proof of the improvements. 'In reaching this decision, LTA took into consideration the considerable challenges SMRT had faced in planning and executing their overhaul regime for the Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) trains,' the authority said, citing the global delays triggered by Covid-19. The disruption stemmed from a faulty component on a first-generation KHI train that led to a partial derailment between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations on the morning of September 25, 2024. Services were affected until September 30, disrupting about one in six trips each day. Investigations found that SMRT had extended overhaul intervals without a detailed engineering or risk assessment. The root cause was traced to degraded grease, which led to the detachment of an axle box — a key component connecting the train's wheels — near Dover station. One of the train's bogies derailed as a result, damaging 2.55km of track and trackside infrastructure. SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai responded in a Facebook post, saying the operator will 'strengthen its direct engagement with original equipment manufacturers of trains and systems' and invest in technical expertise through deeper collaboration. Lam added that SMRT has long prioritised workforce development and upskilling, and will continue supporting the secondment of LTA engineers — a practice ongoing since 2018. SMRT is also working with LTA and Alstom to progressively roll out the new R151 trains, with all 106 units expected on the North-South and East-West lines by 2026. As of June 29, 61 R151 trains were in operation. The ageing KHI fleet is set to be retired by September. The Straits Times reported that LTA had earlier described the original S$3 million fine as 'proportionate', but also took into account SMRT's financial outlay for emergency bus bridging and shuttle services during the disruption, as well as repair costs. SMRT had submitted its representations on June 6 after receiving LTA's notice of intention to penalise the operator on May 30. The transport regulator reviewed the submission before confirming the revised fine on July 25. SMRT has 14 days to appeal the penalty to Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow. Asked by The Straits Times whether it would do so, Lam said only that SMRT had 'noted that LTA had considered its representations'. The S$2.4 million penalty is the second-highest imposed on a rail operator in Singapore's history. The record fine remains the S$5.4 million SMRT incurred following a 2015 disruption that shut down the entire North-South and East-West lines during evening rush hour.

Hong Kong starts building city's first public hydrogen charging system for EVs
HONG KONG: Construction of Hong Kong's first public automatic hydrogen charging system for electric vehicles, set to begin operation in the second quarter of 2026, kicked off on Friday (July 26) at the city's Science Park, signaling a bold step toward a sustainable future. The project, jointly initiated by the Hong Kong and China Gas Co Ltd (Towngas) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp (HKSTP), is to serve as a demonstration hub for hydrogen-based EV charging in the city. The new system, which will run automatically, uses hydrogen extracted from the city's gas network to generate electricity for EV charging, producing only water vapor as a byproduct. Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP Albert Wong Hak-keung stressed the growing global momentum behind hydrogen-powered mobility and the importance of practical action in tackling climate change. He said that as hydrogen charging solutions gain traction worldwide, Hong Kong's new system is set to inspire further adoption of clean energy in the city's transport sector. 'This new hydrogen system at Science Park is not only a demonstration of hydrogen's potential for EV charging, but also a catalyst for Hong Kong's green mobility transformation, encouraging more businesses to adopt clean energy,' Wong said. The project's launch comes at a critical time as Hong Kong's appetite for electric vehicles continues to surge. In reply to a query from a local lawmaker on May 14, the government stated that the number of EVs registered in the city has soared to over 110,000, an eightfold increase over the past five years, placing mounting pressure on the city's charging infrastructure. Currently, about seven out of every 10 newly registered private cars in the city are electric private cars, and the growth rate is among the highest in the world. While nearly 100,000 parking spaces now offer EV charging, government officials acknowledge that innovative solutions are needed to keep pace with demand and support Hong Kong's ambitious climate goals. Hydrogen fuel cells, already in use in select transport and construction sectors globally, are now being trialed in Hong Kong as a means to diversify the city's energy sources and reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels. The new system is designed to operate fully automatically, supplying up to five 7-kilowatt charging points daily, and features built-in energy storage to ensure consistent power delivery. Tse Chin-wan, secretary for Environment and Ecology, highlighted Hong Kong's sustainable progress in cutting carbon emissions and the strategic importance of hydrogen energy. He said that the project makes use of the city's extensive gas pipeline network to extract hydrogen, serving as a demonstration for future applications. Tse reaffirmed the government's support for more hydrogen pilot projects, with the goal of making Hong Kong a regional showcase for hydrogen technology. 'As we look to the future, the government will continue to support and encourage the industry to explore more hydrogen pilot and collaborative projects, driving Hong Kong to become a demonstration base for hydrogen technology,' Tse said. 'This pioneering project injects new energy into our goal of building a sustainable, low-carbon city.' - China Daily/ANN
