High incomes and good work-life balance: See which U.S. cities have the best job markets.
With an eye toward job-hunters' needs, SmartAsset ranked 348 U.S. cities based on six factors from the most recent Census Bureau data, including unemployment rates (from 2023), income growth, health insurance coverage, median commute times and more.
Read on to find which cities have the most to offer U.S. workers.
Which cities have the best overall job market?
Bend, Oregon, has the top job market in the United States, according to SmartAsset. The West Coast city notched points for its low unemployment rate (3.1%) and high income growth. From 2020 to 2023, the median income in Bend grew 44% — the fourth highest rate after Richmond, Virginia, (50%); Nampa, Idaho, (47%); and Dayton, Ohio, (45%).
A hub for outdoor recreation, Bend also stands out for its work-life balance. The median commute time for workers in Bend is 16 minutes, with just over a quarter of the city's population working remotely.
Trailing Bend in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots for best overall job markets are Richmond, Virginia, and Seattle, Washington.
Which cities have the highest percentage of health care coverage for workers?
For workers looking for solid health care coverage, a move to Santa Clara, California, may be worth considering. Over 88% of the population in the southern Bay Area city have private health insurance plans through their employer. Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Bellevue, Washington, follow close behind with roughly 87% of their residents having health coverage through their employers.
Which cities have the best work-life balance?
No one wants to spend large chunks of their day sitting on a train or stuck in traffic. For that reason, cities with the shortest commute times and highest percentage of remote workers receive top rankings for work-life balance in SmartAssets' study.
With a median commute time of roughly 14 minutes, workers in Wichita Falls, Texas, have one the shortest commute times in the country, according SmartAsset. Abilene, Texas, and Topeka, Kansas, workers also spend less time in transit than others, with median commutes of around 14 and 15 minutes, respectively.
In terms of work-life balance, Frisco, Texas, part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro, stands out from the crowd, with over 32% of workers conducting their jobs remotely. Berkeley, California, and Charlotte, North Carolina, also embrace work from home with a total 29% and 28% remote workers, respectively.

Apple Inc. (AAPL): People Are Tired Of The Stock Buybacks, Says Jim Cramer
We recently published . Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is one of the stocks Jim Cramer recently discussed. Cramer continues to be one of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s strongest proponents even though the firm's shares have lost 12.6% year-to-date. The stock has struggled due to trade tensions between the US and China that have threatened to disrupt the supply chain, the firm's struggle to convince the market about its presence in the AI market, and concerns about slow iPhone sales. However, the CNBC host believes that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will maintain its stature as long as the firm holds its high-end smartphone market share. This time around, he criticized Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s stock buybacks and deemed them inadequate: '[On reports of Apple reportedly looking to rely on third party AI] Look at how the stock reacted. Because people are tired of Apple just saying, you know what we're gonna do, we're gonna buy back stock until we get something better. No. I mean that's not what you can do anymore. A wide view of an Apple store, showing the range of products the company offers. Cramer commented on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s woes in detail recently. Here is what he said: '. . .Apple, which cannot get out of its own way. And I think probably could go down to 25 times earnings. Which is a substantial decline. Apple's a share donor. It's a share donor. '[On why Apple stock should be bought] No I'm not going to because I think the multiple's too high. While we acknowledge the potential of AAPL as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. New study reveals simple food choice that can have major impact on your health: 'Helps to lower cholesterol'
"Beans, beans … good for the heart" is part of a popular saying, and now there's evidence they can help prediabetic people manage their cholesterol and inflammation too. Medical News Today summarized the study, which investigated the metabolic benefits of consuming legumes among people with prediabetes. The 12-week study found that, compared to eating white rice, consuming chickpeas or black beans daily instead had measurable impacts on inflammation. Eating chickpeas was linked with reduced blood cholesterol. Prediabetes occurs when an individual has higher-than-normal blood glucose levels but not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes. While prediabetes can lead to Type 2 diabetes, it can also be reversed. This study is one of a handful that investigates dietary interventions that could help prevent prediabetic people from developing Type 2 diabetes. "The soluble fiber in these legumes helps to lower cholesterol by reducing how much is absorbed into the bloodstream," Maddie Gallivan, a registered dietitian who was not involved in the study, told MNT. She also highlighted some of the other benefits of consuming these legumes. "Beans and chickpeas are excellent examples of plant-based protein sources that are also packed with fiber," she said. "They also help you keep you fuller for longer." Plus, beans can support a healthy gut microbiome, supporting overall health, Gallivan added. The benefits don't stop there, though. Eating more beans and other plant-based food options can also help you save money at the cash register. Plus, eating a plant-based diet is good for the planet. In fact, one study found that if we replaced half of our meat products with plant-based alternatives, we could reduce pollution caused by global agriculture by as much as a third by 2050, compared to 2020 levels. "There are a lot of ways to incorporate beans into your regular diet as a cost-effective way to support overall health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases," the study's presenting author, Morganne Smith, said, according to MNT. "You can blend them to add some thickness to a soup base, add them as a salad topping, or pair them with other grains like rice or quinoa." "They are also good for the environment," added Federica Amati, head nutritionist at ZOE, a science and nutrition company. "Eat more of them." Why do you eat plant-based foods? How does CNET select the best July 4th appliance deals? Our team of expert shoppers and deal hunters has spent years helping buyers understand which major sales and deals are legitimately good and which are more routine. That includes Black Friday, Prime Day, Memorial Day and countless other shopping events. We've become very good at weeding out scams and superficial deals on appliances of every kind, so you see only the best offers. At CNET, we look for real discounts, quality reviews and remaining sale time when choosing a deal to show you. Real discounts mean exactly that. We look at the price history for that product to make sure no manufacturers are inflating prices to make the discount seem more substantial than it is. Quality reviews are important for any product, but especially for deeply discounted items. An appliance is a big investment, and if you don't get enough mileage out of it, the discount isn't really worthwhile. Remaining sale time is a huge part of our vetting process. If a deal seems like it'll be around for only a short while or will be available only for remaining stock, we'll let you know upfront so you don't come back to the deal later only to be disappointed.
