Delhi government to train teachers in Indian Knowledge Systems at IITs: Education Minister
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood on Monday said school teachers in the national capital will soon be trained in India's traditional knowledge systems through a specialised programme at two Indian Institutes of Technology.
The initiative, expected to roll out in September, aims to familiarise educators with Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), covering subjects such as philosophy, Sanskrit, arts, sciences, and ancient texts, including the Vedas and the Upanishads.
It will also feature modules on Ayurveda, Yoga, and other aspects of India's cultural and intellectual heritage, Sood said.
In the first phase, at least 50 government school teachers will be shortlisted and grouped into batches of five.
They will be trained over five to seven days at IIT-Mandi in Himachal Pradesh and IIT-Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
The programme is designed to bridge the gap between modern education and India's age-old knowledge traditions, Sood said.
"By training teachers in these areas, the aim is to foster a stronger connection between students and their cultural roots," Sood said. (PTI)

GATE 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has launched the official website for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026, The registration process will begin on August 25, 2025, and candidates can apply without a late fee until September 25. Applicants with qualifications from professional societies like IE, ICE, IETE, AeSI, IIChE, IIM, and IIIE must ensure that their certification is approved by MoE/AICTE/UGC/UPSC as equivalent to a BE/BTech/BArch/BPlanning degree. Foreign degree holders or students in their third year or above of equivalent programs are also eligible. Detailed Eligibility Criteria Candidates pursuing or holding a higher degree than the ones listed are also eligible to appear for the exam. GATE 2026 Papers and New Addition GATE 2026 will be conducted in 30 subjects, with a new sectional paper on Energy Science (XE-I) introduced under Engineering Sciences. Candidates can choose to appear in one or two papers, but only certain two-paper combinations are allowed. DU's U-Special buses may return with new upgrades
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced the relaunch of the U-Special bus service around Delhi University, reviving a transport option once central to student life. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the new academic block at DU's Social Centre School. Aimed at easing daily commutes for university students, the relaunched service will feature buses operating on DU routes with added features like onboard music, ambient lighting and air-conditioning to enhance the experience. "This is my gift to the students," said Gupta while addressing the crowd. "Back in our college days, that bus felt like our own — no one else could enter. Over time, those buses disappeared. But today, Delhi govt is bringing them back," she said. Ancient wisdom, modern tech: IIT experts decode Indian Knowledge Systems
For years, India's education model remained largely fixed, focused on syllabi, exams, and marks. But the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is beginning to change that. One of the core changes is the formal inclusion of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) across educational such as Vedic mathematics, traditional logic, and ancient ecological practices are being introduced into classrooms. What was earlier treated as peripheral or historical content is now being studied as a core part of understand how this is taking shape on the ground, India Today Digital spoke to IIT Mandi Director, one of the institutions working to implement IKS through structured academic formats. 'We're not just teaching the past. We're decoding it for the present,' says IIT Mandi Director Professor Laxmidhar IIT MANDI IS TESTING ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE FOR MODERN USE IIT Mandi explained how IKS elements are being applied in areas like engineering, environmental science, and data approach, they say, is not about glorifying ancient practices, but about testing, adapting, and using them in today's context.
