The Unique Identity Authority of India ( UIDAI ) is set to implement stringent measures to combat rising instances of fraud through Aadhaar and fake UID numbers, CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar told ET.Detailing the measures, Kumar said UIDAI, the central agency tasked with issuing Aadhaar, plans to impose curbs on frequent changes to birth dates and biometrics, verifying information directly with other official databases, and tapping frontier technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning to weed out use of wrong photographs, and incorrect and mixed biometrics. The agency is also making the Aadhar application form completely online and insist that all states switch to documents that are verifiable online, among other measures."If you want to play in a cricket team, they try to reduce their age by two years. If they want to get a job, they want to increase their age by two years. It's a lot of fraud," said Kumar, who assumed charge this January. "People try to game it through multiple birth certificates. We are strongly tightening all those things. Because the integrity of Aadhaar has to be maintained."He said that if someone has to alter the date of birth, it has to be first changed in the original birth certificate, and that the authority will not accept a second birth certificate. "We'll match it from the source," said Kumar, adding UIDAI has managed to get direct access to the original databases of 35 states so far in the last six months and has integrated various documents at the source level such as PAN, CBSE marksheets and MGNREGA records, and is in the process of integrating with others."The idea is that when a resident submits any of the documents for Aadhaar enrolment or updating, the UIDAI will verify the veracity of the document directly from the source to ensure it's not fake," said Kumar. "We are using a lot of technology to make the system more foolproof and increasing the facility," he said, adding the identity platform's technical infrastructure is being continuously upgraded. For instance, UIDAI has developed an artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) algorithm to check the genuineness of fingerprints to prevent biometric fraud and ensure that they are of a "live finger". Similarly, AI-based software in cameras is used for age estimation and to confirm that some older person is not applying for a Aadhaar meant for a child which doesn't require biometrics. AI is also used to match a person's photo with photos in the Bureau of Immigration database to check fraud. The UIDAI is also checking the possibility of placing restrictions on the number of times an individual can update fingerprints. Updating fingerprints may make sense for elderly people whose fingerprints may change, but not for young people, and there is no reason why they should be updated again and again, said Kumar. He said there have also been instances where people have mixed their hand and feet biometrics with the aim of committing fraud. Some have even mixed their biometrics with another person to generate a unique combination. The AI/ML will be able to check for such abnormalities, Kumar emphasised. The agency also aims to make applying for Aadhaar an online process. While there is also demand for Aadhaar cards from non-citizens residing in India, the UIDAI is strict about ensuring they apply after the required window of staying in India for 180 days, and that they apply in the correct category. "We have rejected 1,456 applications in the last six months on this basis - that you are a foreigner (but) you have applied in the Indian category," said Kumar.

Govt. schools to get ICT labs, students high-end laptops
NEW DELHI Education Minister Ashish Sood said on Tuesday that the Delhi government will set up Information and Communication Technology (ICT) labs in 175 government schools and distribute free high-end laptops to 1,200 meritorious students who passed the Class 10 examination. The initiative is part of the Mukhya Mantri Digital Education Scheme and aims to equip students with digital tools aligned with evolving technology, he said at a press conference. The laptops, equipped with i7 processors, will be provided to academically outstanding students at a total cost of ₹8 crore. 'This will enable them to pursue their aspirations in the digital age without technological barriers,' Mr. Sood said, adding that the scheme aligns with the National Education Policy 2020. The Minister said each ICT lab will follow the CBSE parameters and be equipped with 40 computers. The government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a private organisation to establish 100 ICT labs in as many government schools under its Corporate Social Responsibility, he said. Political blame game Hitting out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, Mr. Sood claimed that not a single government school in Delhi currently has a functional computer lab, despite AAP's repeated claims of having transformed education in the Capital. 'Out of 1,074 government schools, not even one has a working computer lab. I invite the media to verify this on the ground,' he said. AAP dismissed Mr. Sood's claims. 'He has developed a habit of ranting about the previous government. If he believes there's any merit in his claims, he should order an inquiry or refer the matter to the ACB (Anti Corruption Branch)for probe,' it said.

Dalmia Bharat's profit surges nearly 3 times on improved pricing
Dalmia Bharat's consolidated net profit surged nearly three times on year in the June quarter to Rs 345 crore, helped by an improvement in net sales realisations, which offset the impact of lower sales volumes. ADVERTISEMENT The cement producer's sales volume fell nearly 6% on year to 7 million tonnes in the June quarter, which limited a growth in its consolidated revenue to 0.4% on year to Rs 3,636 crore. The topline grew despite a fall in sales volume as realisations improved by 6.6% on year to Rs 5,193 per tonne during the quarter. This also boosted the company's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization to an all-time high of Rs 883 crore, while the EBITDA made on each tonne of cement surged 40% on year to Rs 1,261. The profitability was also boosted by lower costs of logistics and power and fuel costs, as compared to the previous year. 'Beginning of this year marks a recovery in cement realizations in our key markets, which has helped us deliver robust EBITDA growth, resulting in an EBITDA margin of 24.3%, which is an increase of 5.8% percentage points compared to last year,' Puneet Dalmia, managing director of the company was quoted in a release. The company currently has a capacity of 49.5 million tonne and is targeting a capacity of 75 million tonne by FY28. DMK tweaks campaign after high court injunction on OTP
Chennai: A day after Madras high court issued an interim injunction restraining DMK from sending one time password (OTP) verification messages during its 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign, the party made a change in its enrolment procedure eliminating the usage of OTP for verification. DMK organisational secretary R S Bharathi issued a statement on Tuesday asking DMK cadres to use the updated 'Makkaludan Stalin' mobile app for the membership drive, as the changes have been incorporated in the app. According to the changes, while an OTP will not be requested, the mobile number of a person is mandatory for enrolment. Also, one mobile number is enough for a family even if multiple members from the household get enrolled. If the family members agree, all their mobile numbers can be obtained, Bharathi said.
