Will Lionel Messi play at the 2026 World Cup?
The 38-year-old, considered by many to be the best player ever to play the game, was featuring on the world stage again after a couple of years of playing for Miami in the MLS, far away from the spotlight that had enveloped him for much of his career.
And with this tournament taking place around a year before the 2026 World Cup, perhaps the biggest question was whether Messi still has the ability to affect games as he did for Argentina in 2022, and by extension whether it looks likely that he would be playing in the World Cup next year.
And despite a disappointing exit to former club PSG over the weekend, Messi still showed that he has plenty to offer, not least with a superb free-kick to lead his side to a 2-1 win over Porto in the group stages.
But with the World Cup under a year away, Messi has given no indication as to whether he wants to play – so what do the signs say, and might we have seen the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner on the world stage for the last time?
Messi will turn 39 not long after the start of next year's World Cup, which naturally leads to some doubts over whether he will want to feature in the sixth World Cup of his career.
In addition, the Argentine's contract with Inter Miami runs out at the end of 2025, though he is thought to be involved in talks to extend his stay in the US.
It is thought that Miami will be the last club of the Argentine's illustrious career, so it is safe to assume that we won't be seeing him on the Champions League or Copa Libertadores stages again.
But might he be tempted to take part in a sixth World Cup?
Argentina's World Cup win in 2022 was the last achievement that Messi had to tick off in his career, with many now believing he has earned the title of 'best ever' after captaining his country to a third World Cup and winning the Golden Ball award for best player at the tournament.
With that in mind, Messi would probably be forgiven for thinking he has nothing left to prove, though a strong counter-argument remains – if fit, why wouldn't he play?
Simply appearing in the World Cup remains the pinnacle of most players' careers, while winning one is still the biggest achievement possible in the game.
Nobody has ever won two World Cups as captain, while only 21 players – including Pele, Ronaldo and former Argentina defender Daniel Passarella – have won two World Cups at all. If he were to win a second, few could argue against him being the best of all time.
The mere possibility of winning football's greatest prize again could well be enough to tempt Messi to feature in the USA next year, with potential for the game's greatest swan song if the then-39 year old was able to play a central role in a winning campaign.
And perhaps fans can take some encouragement from Messi's recent appearances for his country, with the 38-year-old having featured in 11 of the 15 games in qualifying, helping Argentina to qualify for the 2026 World Cup as early as March of this year.
International teammate Nicolas Otamendi recently said that he expects Messi to feature at the World Cup, though Spanish journalist Guillem Balague – who wrote a book on Messi in 2023 – said that the Argentina talisman 'has not indicated to anyone what his final decision is."
"If he renews and stays in America, he'll evaluate the situation when he needs to, but for the time being he is just taking things step by step,' said Balague in a column for the BBC.
Though nobody knows for sure, Messi's performances at the Club World Cup show that he at least remains mobile and capable enough to affect games at the highest level, especially if afforded the level of teammate that he is while on international duty.
So, if selected for the squad by Lionel Scaloni, surely Messi would accept the call up? Argentina fans will certainly be praying he does, and you suspect many neutrals will be too.

They would prefer for 'continuity' in the engine room with Ruiz striking up a tidy understanding with Joao Neves and Vitinha. United are keen to add quality signings in their bid to rebuild under Ruben Amorim and have already captured Matheus Cunha from Wolves, with Brentford 's Bryan Mbeumo expected to follow him through the door. Some of the world's leading track and field stars are still waiting on millions of pounds in payments they have been promised for participating in Michael Johnson's new Grand Slam Track series. As The Times revealed last month, Johnson, the BBC pundit and former Olympic sprint champion, had to call an emergency meeting with athletes to notify them of the cancellation of the final of the four Grand Slam Track (GST) events in Los Angeles from June 27 to June 29. But senior figures in the sport have now told The Times that athletes, Olympic and world champions among them, and their agents are still chasing money owed to them from the first meet in Kingston, Jamaica, at the start of April, with some now expressing their concerns directly to World Athletics. 'It's still a bit vague,' one leading agent said. 'If they have the money, why can't they pay it now? For some of these athletes we are talking a lot of money; hundreds of thousands of pounds. Manchester United interested in ambitious move for experienced PSG midfielder
Manchester United are interested in Paris Saint-Germain and Spain midfielder Fabian Ruiz, but a successful move could prove very difficult to pull off. The 29-year-old was a big part in PSG's immense season last time round as they completed a treble of the Champions League, Ligue 1 and Coupe de France. The Spaniard made 58 appearances across all competitions, 17 of which came in the successful Champions League campaign. Ruiz started the final against Inter Milan alongside Vitinha and Joao Neves, the midfield trio which was hugely influential over the season under Luis Enrique. After plenty of fine performances it is no surprise that Ruiz has attracted attention and Manchester United are reportedly admirers of the former Napoli man. French publication Foot Mercato report that there is interest from Saudi Arabia, specifically from Al-Nassr, and also from Old Trafford. It is not the first time the Red Devils have been linked with Ruiz, as the English team were named as suitors for him when he made the switch from Napoli to PSG in 2022. A deal to sign Ruiz will be far from easy to secure, though, given the contrasting fortunes of Manchester United and PSG of late. The French champions announced themselves as the best team in Europe last season, with their 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final leaving little doubt over that. Whereas the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League table and their defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final meant they missed their final chance to play Champions League football – or European football of any brand – next season. PSG also do not want to let Ruiz go, with the Spaniard an important part of Enrique's plans, as he was throughout the 2024-25 season. The manager said of Ruiz earlier this year: 'I'm very happy with what he brings on and off the pitch. He can still improve, like everyone else. He always plays hard, he's always ready to play a minute or 90, he's very important for us, I'm very happy with his performances. 'He's sometimes been criticized, but he's one of my best midfielders. He knows how to play around his teammates. He can make assists, play between the lines, play without the ball, create chances, he has a good shot. 'We mustn't forget that he was voted the best player at Euro 2024.' The midfielder is under contract in Paris until 2027 and an extension is certainly a possibility if PSG want to guarantee that he will not be tempted away. More Trending Manchester United, as ever, have been linked with a numerous players during this transfer window, including in central midfield. While not in the same class as Ruiz, Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi is reportedly a name on their radar as he is available for just £9m due to a release clause in his Foxes contract. The Red Devils are looking for improvement in multiple positions, with Bryan Mbeumo still their focus in attack as they look to get a deal done with Brentford. Goalkeeper Andre Onana's future is also uncertain and a replacement could be brought in, while other arrivals may depend on departures as the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are on the transfer list but agreeing deals for the forwards, who are on huge contracts, is not easy.
