Five Western Mass. teens arrested after stolen car crashes with two others on I-91
The car chase began after a Holyoke police sergeant noticed a car that had been reported stolen driving around the city with five people inside, Holyoke police said in a press release. The sergeant tried to pull over the stolen car as it went into the Holyoke Mall parking lot, but the driver accelerated and crashed through two wooden barriers around a construction zone.
The stolen car continued onto I-91 south and tried to get off at an exit, but it collided with another vehicle, which led to a third vehicle being struck, police said. All five people in the stolen car ran into the woods following the crash.
The sergeant checked on the people in the other two vehicles and then began searching for the suspects, police said. West Springfield police and Massachusetts State Police troopers and the State Police Air Wing responded to the scene to aid in the search.
West Springfield police located all five of the suspects: an 18-year-old Chicopee man, a male 17-year-old from Holyoke, a 15-year-old Springfield girl, a 14-year-old Pittsfield girl and a 24-year-old Springfield woman, police said. They arrested the 17-year-old, 15-year-old and 14-year-old, who declined a medical evaluation, and the 18-year-old and 24-year-old were taken to Baystate Medical Center with injuries but are being charged with receiving a stolen vehicle.
The investigation into the incident indicated that the 17-year-old was driving the stolen car during the car chase, police said. Holyoke police did not identify any of the suspects.

2 women shot in Homestead
Two women were injured in a late-night shooting in Homestead. Allegheny County Police say dispatchers were initially notified of shots fired in the area of Hays Street just after 10 p.m. on Monday. Police say officers who arrived at the scene found two women who had each been shot. According to police, the first woman was shot twice in the leg and was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition. Police say the second woman was grazed in the shoulder and did not need to be taken to the hospital. Several shell casings were recovered from the scene, according to police. Florida man who killed 2 people outside a bar is scheduled to be executed
STARKE, Fla. (AP) — A man who fatally shot a man and woman outside a Florida bar as part of an attempted revenge killing is scheduled to be executed on Tuesday. Michael Bernard Bell, 54, is scheduled to receive a lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke, barring a last-day reprieve. He was convicted in 1995 and sentenced to death for the murders of Jimmy West and Tamecka Smith. Bell would be the eighth person put to death in Florida this year, with a ninth scheduled for later this month. The state executed six people in 2023, but carried out only one execution last year. Twenty-five men have already been executed in the U.S. this year, tying last year's total . Florida has executed more people than any other state this year, while Texas and South Carolina are tied for second place with four each. Alabama has executed three people, Oklahoma has killed two, and Arizona, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee each have killed one. In December 1993, Bell spotted what he thought was the car of the man who fatally shot his brother earlier that year, according to court records. Bell was apparently unaware that the man had sold the car to West. Bell called on two friends and armed himself with an AK-47 rifle, authorities said. They found the car parked outside a liquor lounge and waited. When West, Smith and another woman eventually exited the club, Bell approached the car and opened fire, officials said. West died at the scene, and Smith died on the way to the hospital. The other woman escaped injury. Witnesses said Bell also fired at a crowd of onlookers before fleeing the area. He was eventually arrested the next year. Bell was later convicted of three additional murders. He fatally shot a woman and her toddler son in 1989, and he killed his mother's boyfriend about four months before the attack on West and Smith, officials said. Attorneys for Bell have filed appeals with the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. The lawyers argued in their state filing that Bell's execution should be halted because of newly discovered evidence about witness testimony. But justices unanimously rejected the argument last week and pointed to overwhelming evidence of Bell's guilt in a 54-page opinion. Police involved in Haverhill struggle with man who later died placed on administrative leave
The seven officers involved in the struggle with a man who later died in Haverhill have been placed on administrative leave, Mayor Melinda Barrett said. The incident happened on Friday night outside of Bradford Seafood Restaurant. Police say that 43-year-old Francis Giliotti was "behaving erratically" before trying to enter the restaurant on Winter Street. Video shows police restraining him by the front door of the establishment. Gigliotti became unresponsive during the incident before later dying, according to the Essex County District Attorney's Office. Barrett said that the officers are on administrative leave while the District Attorney investigates the incident. The family and supporters called for action against the officers during a protest on Sunday. "They should lose their jobs and be indicted for murder," said his brother-in-law, Shawn Rooney. "Clearly, you can see they had no crisis intervention team whatsoever that was coming," said protester Robyn Krieger. Barrett said in the statement that the department has a behavioral health clinician on staff, who responded to 814 calls in 2024. The department also has a social worker. "I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Losing a loved one is tragic, but especially so under these circumstances," Barrett said. "I am eager to hear the outcome of this investigation and see how the department and the City can learn and grow from this in the name of truth, justice, and public safety. At this time, I continue to urge patience as the investigation continues and all of the facts are disclosed." The District Attorney is looking for any videos or photos from the altercation.
