Five Western Mass. teens arrested after stolen car crashes with two others on I-91

Five Western Massachusetts teens were arrested Saturday after a car chase between police and a stolen car ended with the stolen car crashing with two others on I-91 in West Springfield, Holyoke police announced Monday. The car chase began after a Holyoke police sergeant noticed a car that had been reported stolen driving around the city with five people inside, Holyoke police said in a press release. The sergeant tried to pull over the stolen car as it went into the Holyoke Mall parking lot, but the driver accelerated and crashed through two wooden barriers around a construction zone. The stolen car continued onto I-91 south and tried to get off at an exit, but it collided with another vehicle, which led to a third vehicle being struck, police said. All five people in the stolen car ran into the woods following the crash. The sergeant checked on the people in the other two vehicles and then began searching for the suspects, police said. West Springfield police and Massachusetts State Police troopers and the State Police Air Wing responded to the scene to aid in the search. West Springfield police located all five of the suspects: an 18-year-old Chicopee man, a male 17-year-old from Holyoke, a 15-year-old Springfield girl, a 14-year-old Pittsfield girl and a 24-year-old Springfield woman, police said. They arrested the 17-year-old, 15-year-old and 14-year-old, who declined a medical evaluation, and the 18-year-old and 24-year-old were taken to Baystate Medical Center with injuries but are being charged with receiving a stolen vehicle. The investigation into the incident indicated that the 17-year-old was driving the stolen car during the car chase, police said. Holyoke police did not identify any of the suspects. Hundreds of artists come to Paradise City Arts Festival in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The annual Paradise City Arts Festival was back in Northampton this weekend. Ever since Marlene Rye was a child, she has always introduced herself as an artist. She's known for her bold and contemporary pastels and oils of places she travels to with her family, and her motto is 'seek the joy of being alive.' West Springfield rideout honors man who died in I-91 motorcycle accident 'I want people to feel happy when they see these works,' Rye said. 'They're supposed to be uplifting and bring you a sense of peace.' Rye is one of more than 200 artists showcasing their work this Memorial Day weekend for the 31st Annual Paradise City Arts Festival at the Three County Fairgrounds in Northampton, a festival that took six months to plan. In addition to art, food, and music, there was a silent art auction to benefit the International Language Institute of Massachusetts. This year's special exhibit explores how artists derive inspiration from the animal kingdom. It's called 'Feathers and Fur,' and three chickens from a local farm helped kick off the show on Saturday. 'Artists are always incredibly inspired by the animal kingdom, so this was a great way that artists from all these different mediums could find things to contribute in the exhibit,' said show director Mariah Swanson. 'Whether it's inspired by the texture of feathers, scales, fur.' 'Sometimes I make something that looks like a fish or whatever,' said exhibitor Whitmore Boogaerts. 'Or a lot of times, abstract, because to me, a sculpture is about energy and feeling.' Whether home decor, sculpture, fashion, or jewelry, it was mandatory for all pieces to be homemade.
