Are the Denver Nuggets in danger of a 1st-round playoff exit?
The Denver Nuggets have found themselves in a precarious position. Despite having Nikola Jokić, arguably the league's most dominant player, and a stellar offense, their porous defense has become a glaring issue as the playoffs approach. On "The Kevin O'Connor Show," guest Jason Timpf and Kevin O'Connor dissect Denver's defensive struggles and what they mean for the Nuggets' chances of making it through the postseason.
Jokić's brilliance on the offensive end is unquestionable, with jaw-dropping numbers even in losses. However, Denver has a 115.1 defensive rating, which ranks 20th in the league.
"Everything about my belief, surrounding the game of basketball, tells me that this team is destined to a first- or second-round loss," Timpf said. "They are so bad on defense."
O'Connor and Timpf debate the viability of Denver making a deep playoff run given their inability to stifle opponents consistently. For the future, the duo float the idea of potentially overhauling the roster around Jokić to focus more on a defensive-minded team because of Jokić's ability to elevate athletic players and create an offensive system on his own.
With Jamal Murray's availability in doubt because of a hamstring injury and Michael Porter Jr. not consistently stepping up defensively, the Nuggets face a critical juncture. There's a loud call from the podcast for Denver to heed these warnings and possibly embrace significant changes if it wants to maximize its window with Jokić. Denver's defensive liabilities could be the tether that prevents it from soaring when it matters most.
And with coach Michael Malone shockingly fired on Tuesday, it's safe to say everything is on the table.

Russell Westbrook Is Trending After Bucks' Move on Saturday
Russell Westbrook Is Trending After Bucks' Move on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Russell Westbrook is one of the more accomplished players available in free agency. The 2017 NBA MVP has nine All-Star appearances, nine All-NBA appearances, two All-Star Game MVP honors, and is a two-time scoring champion. Advertisement At 36 years old, Westbrook is not the player he once was, but he helped the Denver Nuggets tremendously with their latest season. In 75 games, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds while shooting nearly 45% from the field. After opting out of his contract with the Nuggets, Westbrook is free to join whoever he wants. One team that could make some sense is the Milwaukee Bucks, who recently waived and stretched Damian Lillard to make room for Myles Turner. Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook (4)© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Westbrook could be Lillard's replacement as the Bucks point guard, and was linked to them in a recent report from Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. Advertisement "The expectation surrounding the Bucks is that they will be utilizing one of their final roster spots to add extra guard depth after bringing back Kevin Porter Jr. and Ryan Rollins in free agency," he wrote. "Given Westbrook's athleticism and speed, he would be an ideal fit next to Giannis Antetokounmpo on a Bucks team that likes to push the pace in transition." However, that doesn't appear to be in the cards now. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a contract buyout with Cole Anthony, who will sign with the Bucks once he clears waivers. "Cole Anthony has agreed to a contract buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies and plans to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks after he clears waivers, sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote. "Grizzlies finalized the buyout with Jeff Schwartz and Javon Phillips of Excel Sports for Anthony's new opportunity." Advertisement The Bucks signing Anthony made many conclude that Westbrook would not be Milwaukee-bound. "MY TEAM DIDN'T SIGN RUSSELL WESTBROOK," one fan wrote with a GIF of Patrick Beverley throwing his jersey into a crowd in celebration. "Russ fc there goes the bucks," another fan stated. "Lmao this kind of dashes my hope for Russell Westbrook to the bucks smh," another complained. "Now where does westbrook go," one asked. "RUSSELL WESTBROOK (you) ARE A LAKER" a Lakers fan decreed. Westbrook played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 2021 to 2023. If Westbrook joins a new team that he has not joined before, it would make for his seventh NBA team, and seventh in the last eight years. The important off-the-court impact Nets expect Michael Porter Jr. to provide
LAS VEGAS — The biggest move of Brooklyn's summer brought back the only championship winner on the roster. Michael Porter Jr. is the only player with a ring, the one who has been where the Nets are trying to get. And coach Jordi Fernández — who was with Porter in Denver for the first four years of the forward's career — hopes some of that can rub off on his young team. Advertisement 'He's excited to be here. I'm excited to reunite with him,' Fernández said. 'We have history together. I loved my time with Michael. And I know he's going to bring a lot. His work ethic is very good. He's a pro, works really hard, so that's going to be good for the young guys to see a guy like him that won a championship, and why.' Porter bounced back from a back injury in 2021-22 by winning the title with Denver the following season. The Nets traded Cam Johnson for Porter and the Nuggets' unprotected 2032 first-round pick. That selection — when Nikola Jokic will be 37 — will be one of the most valuable in Brooklyn's cache of future assets. It's why Yahoo Sports, CBS Sports, SB Nation and Clutch Points all graded the Nets an 'A' for the deal. The Nets acquired Michael Porter Jr. this offseason. AP Advertisement But what exactly will they be getting in Porter in the meantime? Can he be more than just a salary dump? On paper, the 6-foot-10 forward is similar to Johnson, but the similarity ends once it leaves the page. Porter is younger, having turned 27 on June 29. Despite back woes early in his career, Porter is actually healthier, having missed six games the past two seasons compared to Johnson's 43. And he's pricier, the two years and $79.1 million on his deal the reason the Nets were able to get such a valuable pick. Advertisement And he's also going to have to show he can be effective without Jokic. 'He's going to be asked to do things that he's never done before, right? Probably his usage and the shots he's going to take,' admitted Fernández. 'And that's exciting. It should be exciting for him. He's going to work for it. I know the type of person he is. And I was very happy to see him face-to-face [Saturday].' For perspective, Porter averaged 17.4 points in 220 games over the past three years on solid .492/.404/.795 splits. But without Joker? Those numbers dipped, averaging just 15.9 points in 22 games on .440/.268/.707 splits. Michael Porter Jr. is the only player on the Nets roster who has won a championship. NBAE via Getty Images Advertisement Can he be efficient outside of Jokic's orbit? And can he lead a rookie-laden team? 'I don't want him to be out of character. I just want him to be himself,' Fernández said. 'And that's why I'm very comfortable, because I've seen him get where he got, his career year and how he scores the ball and the work he puts in every day. But I know who he is and how good he is going to be. And I want him to lead being Michael Porter. He doesn't need to be anybody else. Once again, I think he'll be very, very good for the group.' Porter is the second-oldest Net behind only Terance Mann, 29. Will he start at power forward while Mann, Egor Demin and Ziaire Williams vie for wing minutes? Or is Porter a small forward alongside stretch four Noah Clowney? 'I don't think it really matters. What matters is who he guards,' Fernández said. 'That's the positionless for us — 1 through 4, it's pretty much the same. 'But Michael is an amazing catch-and-shoot player. He can iso, he can shoot over people, he can rebound the ball. So all those things are very good for what we're building. And he'll help us. And we know our efficiency is gonna go up with him.'

NBA reporter addresses Nikola Jokic's future with Denver Nuggets after declining contract extension
The Denver Nuggets came into the offseason hoping to convince Nikola Jokic to remain with the franchise for years to come. After an array of moves to overhaul the rotation, the three-time NBA MVP told the team he wouldn't sign a contract extension this summer. NBA reporter Sam Amick of The Athletic said on Sactown Sports 1140 that there are 'no signs' Jokic wants out of Denver anytime soon. While he is eligible to hit NBA free agency in 2027, there is no belief that he is even entertaining it right now. The team moved off the Michael Porter Jr. contract, upgraded with Cam Johnson, and created the financial flexibility to add more talent to the roster. Once the deal was official, the Nuggets added Bruce Brown and Jonas Valanciunas to fortify their rotation for next season. All three additions are widely viewed as strong enough for Denver to re-establish itself as one of the elite teams in the Western Conference. By waiting until next year, he'll be eligible to sign a four-year extension worth upwards of $290 million. It's a far better return than the three-year, $212 million deal he could've signed this offseason. Advertisement While NBA teams like the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers are hoping Jokic plays out the final two years of his deal, then tests the open market in 2027, that still seems unlikely to happen. With the moves Denver made this summer to remain a championship contender, there's no reason to believe Jokic is questioning his future with the team. Related Headlines
