Charting the global economy: US jobs data eases pressure on Fed

Time of India3 days ago
(Bloomberg) --Fresh US jobs figures took pressure off the
Federal Reserve
to consider an interest-rate cut later this month, likely leaving the central bank on hold at least until the fall.
While employers added more jobs in June than forecast and the unemployment rate ticked lower, growth in private payrolls weakened.
Elsewhere, the manufacturing slowdown in Asia deepened. Survey data showed purchasing managers indexes for Taiwan, Indonesia and Vietnam firmly in contraction territory.

Here are some of the charts that appeared on Bloomberg this week on the latest developments in the
global economy
, markets and geopolitics:
US
Bloomberg
US job growth exceeded expectations in June as an unusual surge in public education employment masked a slowdown in hiring across the rest of the economy. Private payrolls rose the least since October, largely reflecting hiring in health care. The jobless rate declined to 4.1%, indicating employers remain reticent to lay off workers.
Live Events
Bloomberg
A buildup of unsold houses sitting on the market for weeks is becoming a new reality in once-booming housing areas across the Sun Belt. Real estate agents in the South and Southwest say they're seeing more people list homes, giving up on hopes that mortgage rates will drop anytime soon. In Florida, homeowners are fleeing soaring insurance costs, and in Colorado, investors are culling rental properties.
Europe
Bloomberg
Euro-area inflation
settled at the European Central Bank's target in June, strengthening arguments to press pause on a year-long campaign of interest-rate cuts. A stronger euro and lower energy costs are helping keep price pressures in check — as is lackluster expansion by the region's 20-nation economy.
Bloomberg
The UK economy grew in the first quarter by the most in a year as Britons spent more and saved less before the Labour government's tax hikes and extra US tariffs came into effect. The outlook has darkened since the start of April amid a sharp drop in employment, weak retail sales and plunging exports to the US.
Bloomberg
Swedish retail sales fell the most in more than three decades in May, continuing a run of disappointing data and increasing pressure on the country's central bank to lower rates again. The slump compounds the recent below-forecasts data readings for Sweden including a surprise contraction in first-quarter economic output and a rise in the unemployment rate to 9% in May.
Asia
Bloomberg
The slowdown in Asia's manufacturing activity deepened further in June, a warning sign for the region's growth prospects as tariffs on shipments to the US are poised to increase next week. Export-reliant economies including Taiwan and Vietnam saw their purchasing managers indexes deteriorate further, with factories reporting a continued decline in new orders, output and staffing as the trade war saps demand.
Bloomberg
Japan's annual wage negotiations concluded with the largest pay increase in 34 years, an outcome that supports the central bank's view that a cycle of higher wages and prices is emerging. Workers at 5,162 companies affiliated with the nation's largest union federation Rengo secured an average wage increase of 5.25%, according to the final update of pay deals announced by the union group.
Bloomberg
US President Donald Trump floated the idea of keeping 25% tariffs on Japan's cars as talks between the two nations continued just before a slew of higher duties are set to kick in if a trade deal isn't reached.
Emerging Markets
Bloomberg
Cargo thefts in Mexico topped 24,000 in 2024, up about 16%, data from transportation risk consultancy Overhaul show. That trails the US and Europe in total incidents. But in loss-ratio terms, which compare the number of thefts to economic activity, Mexico is the worst in the world.
World
Bloomberg
Poland's central bank unexpectedly cut interest rates after a one-month pause and said inflation is likely to ease within its target in the coming months. A day after the Wednesday move, central bank Governor Adam Glapinski said the reduction was not the beginning of a cycle of monetary easing, even as he held out for another potential move in September. Tanzania also cut, while Ethiopia and the Bank of Central African States kept borrowing costs on hold.

Govt's MSP for mangoes a rotten deal for growers

Bengaluru: Although well-intended, the govt's market intervention to rescue mango growers from a price crash has backfired, leaving thousands of farmers worse off. They have been forced to sell their produce at a fraction of the cost of cultivation and are still waiting for payment nearly two weeks after registering. While the scheme aimed to provide relief by procuring mangoes at a minimum support price (MSP), many farmers say the compensation is so low that it's compounding their losses rather than reducing them. "Not a single beneficiary has got money although it is 15 days since 6,000 farmers registered for the scheme," said Neelatur Chinnappa Reddy, president, Kolar Mango Growers' Association. "Crops are decaying with the govt taking its time. But the main issue is the low price the govt has fixed. It does not cover even 25% of production costs." You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Official data shows Karnataka had a bumper yield of 10 lakh tonnes of mangoes from 1.3 lakh hectares this season. That bounty — along with low exports — led to a market glut and a sharp price crash, especially in Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru South, and Bengaluru Rural districts. To soften the blow, the state decided to infuse Rs 101 crore — 50% to be borne by the Centre — in the market and procure 2.5 lakh tonnes of mangoes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Drink 1 Cup Every Morning – See What Happens A Week Later! Health Watcher Undo The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) had pegged MSP at Rs 1,616 per quintal (or Rs 16.2/kg). But the state chose to offer just 25% of this — only if market prices dipped below that level — effectively capping the payout at Rs 4 per kg. Given that average cost of production stands at over Rs 12 per kg, the scheme is being slammed as inadequate and flawed. "MSP should be increased to Rs 12 to match production cost," said Reddy. "The cap of five acres should be increased to 10 and the cap on quantity of procurement should be increased from two tonnes per acre to four." Adding to farmers' woes is a delay in payments, as Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation has not yet opened a direct benefit transfer (DBT) account. The finance department is yet to grant approval. Reddy said the growers' association has given the govt time till Wednesday to resolve issues. "Failing which, they will lay siege to Kolar deputy commissioner's office," he said. Farmers also allege that the scheme's eligibility rules exclude most of them. Of the nearly 95,000 mango growers in Karnataka, only 6,673 have been able to register, largely because most cultivate mixed crops like ragi or green gram along with mangoes — a practice disqualified under current rules. Agriculture minister N Cheluvarayaswamy acknowledged the procedural roadblocks and said he would take up the issue with chief minister Siddaramaiah. "Although MSP for mangoes is handled by the departments of cooperation and horticulture, the CM asked me to oversee it. I will bring these issues to his notice," said Cheluvarayaswamy. Kolar district minister Byrathi Suresh also promised quick action. "I will speak to finance officials to ensure approval to open a DBT account," he said.

3 cos frontrunners for Deonar waste treatment project

Mumbai: Three companies emerged as frontrunners when bids were opened on Tuesday for BMC's Rs 2,368-crore bioremediation tender to scientifically treat 185 lakh tonnes of waste at the Deonar dumping ground —one of the oldest and most toxic landfills in the country. Only one of them, Re Sustainability Ltd, has experience in handling Deonar's solid waste; the other two are infrastructure companies. One of the three—Navayuga Engineering Ltd—had tied up with Adani Enterprises for a 47.8km bypass project in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, which was launched in 2021. Re Sustainability is the parent company of Chennai MSW Pvt Ltd, which is currently working on seting up a waste-to-energy plant at Deonar to process 600 tonnes of solid waste daily that is expected to be commissioned by this Oct. The other company—HG Infra Engineering Ltd—has handled highways, bridges, Metro, railways and renewable energy projects, according to its official website. Officials said a scrutiny of the bids packet was still underway as of late Tuesday evening. "The financial packet will be opened on July 11, after which the lowest bidder will be decided," said a civic official. The urgency ties into the state cabinet's Oct 2023 approval to hand over a portion of the Deonar land to Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd—a joint venture between Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (an Adani Group special purpose vehicle) and the state govt. BMC had extended the deadline for submission of bids three times after floating the tender this May—from June 3 to June 23, then to July 1, and finally to July 4. The civic body had held a pre-bid meeting with interested bidders. Officials said several interested parties sought more time to study the entire process, apart from raising questions about certain environmental permissions, owing to which the extensions were granted. The queries raised by the prospective bidders were mainly related to logistical challenges. Many of them shared their concern over how such a large pile of legacy waste could be cleared within three years.
