Nagpur: On the 50th anniversary of one of India's darkest political chapters, the Emergency of 1975, the state govt, along with the district administration, felicitated those who chose imprisonment over silence.
At the ceremony held at the Zilla Niyojan Bhavan on Wednesday, hundreds of former prisoners, now in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s, gathered for a moment that was long overdue, holding hands of their young family members who were not even born at the time of the Emergency.
The honour included certificates of appreciation in recognition of their resistance against the suppression of democratic freedoms during the 21-month Emergency.
Chief minister
Devendra Fadnavis
, who was in the state capital for a similar function for emergency detainees, sent a congratulatory message that was read aloud by tehsildar Santosh Khande. "Those who chose to go to jail during the Emergency saved India's democracy," Fadnavis said in his message, adding, "Their defiance against the dictatorship protected the spirit of free expression and constitutional values. On Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, we reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding democracy.
"
Veterans like Bindumadhav alias Banduji Dev, Umabai Pimpalkar, Devendra Vaidya and Sandhyatai Pandit were among those present. "We faced humiliation back then, but today's honour restores that dignity. This ceremony is not just for us; it's for the next generation to remember what was fought for," Dev said.
A photo exhibition depicting the struggle during the Emergency was inaugurated by the veterans. Rare photographs, archival material, and personal stories of political prisoners like Shripad Risaldar, Jayant Puranik, Pushpatai Totade and others were on display.
District collector Vipin Itankar, Zilla Parishad CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, additional commissioner Tejusingh Pawar and other senior officials presented the certificates on behalf of the state.
A documentary film based on exclusive interviews with former detainees was also unveiled, offering an emotional lens into the lives impacted by the Emergency's clampdown on civil liberties. The event concluded with heartfelt acknowledgements from district information officer Vinod Rapatwar. The programme was hosted and coordinated by tehsildars Snehlata Medhe Patil and Shraddha Bagrao.

Show proof of 'vote chori': Rajnath Singh to Rahul Gandhi

PATNA/NEW DELHI: Defence minister on Saturday slammed Congress neta for claiming to have an "atom bomb of evidence of vote theft" against , and dared him to detonate the explosive. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now At an event organised by a media house in Patna, Singh also likened the upcoming state polls to a crossroad, with one path (under ) leading to further progress and another (under the INDIA bloc) taking Bihar back to its old era of lawlessness and caste strife. "Rahul Gandhi says he is in possession of an atom bomb. If it is so, he should detonate it at once. He should just ensure that he is himself out of harm's way," Singh said. Gandhi had Friday said that his party has an "atom bomb" of evidence to prove "vote chori" by EC for BJP, remarks that evoked a sharp response from the poll panel. The commission termed Gandhi's remarks as "baseless and wild allegations". Singh also said the nation remembers his past rhetoric. "Rahul had threatened Parliament of an earthquake, but when he spoke, it turned out to be a damp squib." Singh said EC is an institution that enjoys a reputation for unquestionable integrity. "It is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the upcoming assembly polls in the state are held in a free and fair manner. It does not behove the leader of the opposition to make frivolous statements about a constitutional body," the BJP MP from Lucknow said. The defence minister reminded the LoP that his own party has blood on its hands, having tried to murder democracy in 1975 with the imposition of the Emergency. The defence minister also criticised the Congress-led opposition for raising questions about Operation Sindoor instead of paying tributes to the valour displayed by the Indian armed forces. The former BJP president alleged that the Congress had been soft on insurgency while in office, and tried to frame innocent people by spinning the theory of saffron terror because of vote bank considerations.

Name contractors troubling Pune industries, opposition tells CM Fadnavis

1 2 Pune: A day after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said that "goondaism" and "bullying" by some contractors in the industrial areas of Pune were affecting the growth of the district, the opposition dared him to expose those people and also questioned why govt was not acting against them. "I am happy that the CM has admitted that bullying is happening in the industrial areas. However, he will have to also answer who is responsible for it and, being the CM, what steps he has taken to address the problem," said NCP (SP) working president and Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Saturday. Fadnavis made the statement at an event in Pune on Friday to discuss the opportunities for industries in the Pune Metropolitan Region. Several Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporations have been set up in Pune district, including the one in Chakan, which is considered the automobile hub of the country. However, there have been complaints from industry representatives that local contractors pressure them for a tie-up for various services and resort to threats if their demands are not accepted. If the CM is only admitting to goondaism in MIDCs, we challenge him to name all of them." Instead of only admitting the facts, the CM should make effort to rectify the issue, Rohit said. "Despite knowing the problem, if he does not take action, it will be seen that he is helping these industries shift from Maharashtra to Gujarat," he added. Shiv Sena (UBT) member Ambadas Danve said it is a fact that the Chakan, Ranjangaon MIDCs, and other industrial areas in Pune are facing the menace of local contractors. "We demand that the CM make it clear whose goondaism is going on in these areas," he said. Reacting to the issue, deputy CM and Pune guardian minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday said the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioners along with the Pune rural superintendent of police have been directed to adopt a no-tolerance policy and take action against anybody who is troubling the industry's people. "Irrespective of which political parties these contractors are connected to, we have told police to register cases against them. If they continue to create a menace, provisions of MCOCA will be invoked against them," he said. Fadnavis Dismisses Levying Urban Naxal Tag on MNS or Protestors Opposing Govt

1 2 Nagpur: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday clarified that provisions under the 'Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024' are aimed at tackling anti-national elements and not meant to stifle protestors or critics of the govt. The remarks came in response to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's challenge to label his party workers as urban Naxals. "Laws like Jan Suraksha are intended for those engaged in unlawful, anti-national activities, not against protestors or those opposing govt actions," Fadnavis said. "MNS workers have not behaved like urban Naxals, so there's no reason for any action under these provisions." On the growing controversy surrounding the introduction of Hindi in schools, the CM reaffirmed the govt's stance on promoting Marathi as the primary language. "Learning Marathi is compulsory in Maharashtra, and rightly so," he said. "But I also believe that students should learn at least one more Indian language. There is nothing wrong in that. What I oppose is the mindset that glorifies English while undermining our Indian languages." Fadnavis also addressed concerns from industrial circles in Pune, where allegations of political interference and extortion have surfaced. He pledged to dismantle what he termed 'dadagiri' in the city's industrial sector. "Industries there misuse the names of political parties. I have decided to end this Dadagiri. Anyone—regardless of party—who wants to help us clean this up is welcome," he said, signalling openness to cross-party collaboration.
